Have you ever wondered why birds sing? Maybe you thought that they were just happy. After all,you

Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy. However, they sing most of the time for a very different reason.Their singing is actually a warning t0 other birds to stay out 0f their territory

Do you know what a ―territory‖is? A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male, claims(声称)as its own.Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families 0f the same species(物种)are welcome.Your yard and house are your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. If a stranger should enter your territory and threaten you,you might shout.Probably this would be enough to frighten him away.

If so,you have actually scared the stranger away without having to fight him.A bird does the same thing. But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting(筑巢) season. So he is screaming all the time, whether he can see an outsider or not This screaming is what we call a bird‘s song, and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away.

Thirteen vehicles fined up last March to race across the Mojave Desert, seeking a million in prize money. To win, they had to finish the 142-rnile race in less than 10 hours.Teams and watchers knew there might be no winner at all, because these vehicles were missing a key part—drivers.DAKPA,the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, organized the race as part of a push to develop robotic vehicles for future battlefields. But the Grand Challenge,as It was called, just proved how difficult it is to get a car to speed across an unfamiliar desert without human guidance. One had its brake lock up in the starting area.Another began by throwing itself onto a wall.Another got tied up by bushes near the road after 1.9 miles.

One turned upside down. One took off in entirely the wrong direction and had to be disabled by remote(远离的)control. One went a little more than a mile and rushed into a fence;another managed to go for six miles but stuck on a rock. The―winner," if there was any.reached 7.8 miles before it ran into a long.narrow hole, and the front wheels caught on fire.

From the moment that an animal is born it has to make decisions. It has to decide which of the things around it are for eating, and which are to be avoided;when to attack and when to run away. The animal is,in fact, playing a very dangerous game with its environment,a game in which it must make decisions——a matter of life or death.

Animal‘s ability to act reasonably is believed to come partly from what we may call ‖ genetic(遗传性的)learning‖,which is different from七he individual(个体的)learning that an animal does in the course of its own lifetime. Genetic 1earning is learning by a species—animals of the same kind——as a whole.and it is achieved by selection of those members of each generation that happen to act in the right way. However, the role of genetic learning depends upon how similar the future environment is to the past The more important individual experience is likely to be.the less important is genetic learning as a means of getting over the problems of the survival game.Because most animals live in ever changing environments from one generation to the next,it is not surprising to find that very few species indeed depend wholly upon genetic learning.

In the great majority of animals, their particular ways of acting in a new environment are a compound (复合体)of individual experience added to the action patterns animals are born with. That is why animals can survive.

Dear Jianhua,

I‘m very glad to have received the letter you sent me two weeks ago. I‘ve been thinking about the question you asked me. In my opinion, you should come back after you finish your studies abroad. For one reason, what you are studying is badly needed nowadays in China. It will be quite easy for you to find a good job. In fact, I know a few big companies in our city are hoping to hire people like you. For another reason, I think it will be much more convenient for you to look after your parents as they are getting old. Theref ore, I think it‘s a good idea for you to return. So what are you waiting for?

Have you ever received a gift that was so clearly not your taste that you wondered if perhaps it had been handed to you by mistake? Worse, have you ever given a present and watched your friend look as though she had opened the wrong box? Maybe she responded with a polite ―Why, thank you,‖ but you knew you had missed the mark. Why do presents sometimes go wrong? And what do your choices (good and had) reflect about your personal qualities?

Choosing the right gift is an art, I believe. It calls for empathy-the ability to put yourself into someone else‘s head and heart. We‘re all able to do this; in fact, we‘re born with a kind of natural empathy. After the earliest period of childhood, however, it needs to be reinforced(加强)-by our parents,

show in the gifts we select, and so can many other emotional(情感的)qualities.

Think back to the presents you‘ve given over the past year, the time and effort you put into your selection, how much you spent, your thoughts while you were shopping ,and your feelings when the receiver opened the package. Keep in mind that what you choose displays your inner world. Of course, you may express yourself differently with different friends, relatives, and other people you know.

We live in a society where exchanging presents is an important part of communication. Ignoring the tradition won‘t make it go away. If you really dislike such a tradition, tell your friends abead of time.

When, two weeks later, I saw the boy again, I was more aware of my position in a society where it‘s not that uncommon to see a little boy who should be in school standing on the corner selling fruit in the burning sun. One thousand naira was a lot of money to someone whose family probably made about 5,000 naira or less each year.―Thank you, sir.‖he said.―Thank you very much!‖

When driving home. I wondered if my little friend actually used the money for schoolbooks. What if he‘s a cheat(骗子)?And then I wondered why I did it. Did I do it to make myself feel better? Was I using

The water is angrily argues in public, has traveled 10,000―food miles‖before it reaches Western customers.―transporting water halfway across the world is surely the extremely stupid use of fuel when there is plenty of water in the OK.‖It is also worried that we are wasting our fuel by buying praums(对虾)from Indonesia(7,000 food miles) and carrots from South Africa(5,900 food miles).

Counting the number of miles traveled done by a product is a strange way of trying to tell the true situation of the environmental damage done by an industry. Most food is transported around the world on container ships that are extremely energy efficient(高能效的). It should be noted that a ton of butter transported 25 miles in a truck product transported hundreds of miles by sea. Besides ,the idea of ―of miles‖ignores the amount of fuel used in the production. It is possible to cut down your food miles by

What the idea of―food miles‖does provide, however, is the chance to cut out Third World Countries from First World food markers. Silence is unnatural to man. He begins life with a cry and ends it in stillness. In between be does all he can to make a noise in the world, and be fears silence more than anything else. Even his conversation is an attempt to prevent a fearful silence. If he is introduced to another person, and is number of pauses occur in the conversation, he regards him- self as a failure ,a worthless person, and is full of envy of the emptiest- headed chatterbox(喋喋不休的人).He knows that ninety nine percent of human conversation means no more than the buzzing of a fly, but he is anxious to join in the buzz and to prove that he is a man and not a waxwork figure(蜡塑人像).

The aim of conversation is not. For the most part, to communicate ideas; it is to keep up the buzzing sound. There are, it must be admitted, different qualities of buzz; there is even a buzz that is as annoying as the continuous noise made by a mosquito(蚊子).But at a dinner party one would rather be a mosquito than a quiet person. Most buzzing, fortunately, is pleasant to the ear, and some of it is pleasant even to the mind. He would be a foolish man if he waited until he had a wise thought to take part in the buzzing with his neighbors.

Those who hate to pick up the weather as a conversational opening seem to me not to know the reason why human beings wish to talk. Very few human beings join in a conversation in the hope of learning anything new. Some of them are content if they are merely allowed to go on making a noise into other people‘s ears, though they have nothing to tell them except that they have seen two or three new plays or that they had food in a Swiss hotel. At the end of an evening, during which they have said nothing meaningful for a long time. They just prove themselves to be successful conservationists.

72. According to the author, people make conversation to .

C. achieve success in life

D. overcome their fear of silence

73. By ―the buzzing of a fly‖(Para.1),the author means ― ‖.

D. the voice of a chatterbox

74. According to the passage, people usually talk to their neighbors .

A. about whatever they have prepared

B. about whatever they want do

C. in the hope of learning something new

D. in the hope of getting on well

75. What is the author‘s purpose in writing the passage?

A. To discuss why people like talking about weather.

B. To encourage people to join in conversations.

C. To persuade people to stop making noises.

D. To explain why people keep talking.

Karen, grown up in a very traditional family in the western United States, maintained high moral(道

two children, a boy and a girl.

By 1991 their love had deepened, and they were happy. Later that year, Bill developed a white spot on his tongue. He visited a doctor.

One day shortly after that, Bill called Karen to sit beside him. He said with tears in his eyes that he loved her and wanted to live forever with her. The doctor suspected that he had been infected with HIV, the virus that leads to AIDS.

The family was testeD.Bill and Karen‘s results were positive. Bill had become infected before he met Karen; then he passed the virus on to Karen. The children‘s results were negative. Within three years, Bill was deaD.―I don‘t know how to express what it is like to watch the once handsome man you love and intend to live with forever dying slowly. I cried many nights. He died three months short of ten years of our marriage,‖says Karen. Though a doctor told Karen t hat she would soon follow her husband into death, she is still alive. The infection has progressed to the early stages of AIDS.

Karen is but one of about 30 million people now living with HIV/AIDS, a figure larger than the combined populations of AustraliA.Ireland and Paraguay. According to one UN report, Africa has 21 million of these victims. By the turn of the century that number could reach 40 million and the disease will bring on the greatest disaster in human history. Of the world‘s sexually active a dults aged 15 to 49,1 in 100 has already been infected with HIV. How can a creature weighing over 5 tons and normally taking 150 kilograms of food and 120 liters of water per day survive in a desert environment?

In the southwest African country of Namibia, and the Sahara lands of Mali further north, the desert

Although not regarded as a separate species from the African elephant, the desert cousin differs in many ways. Their bodies are smaller, to absorb less heat, and their feet are larger for easier walking across sandy surfaces. They are taller, to reach higher branches. They have shorter tusks (象牙),and most importantly, longer trunks to dig for water in riverbeds.

Desert elephants can travel over 70 kilometers in search for feeding grounds and waterholes, and have a larger group of families, They drink only every 3-4 days, and can store water in a ―bag‖ at the back of their throat, which is only used when badly needeD.Desert elephants are careful feeders-they seldom root up trees and break fewer branches, and thus maintain what little food sources are available. Yong elephants may even eat the dung (粪便)of the female leader of a group when facing food shortage.

During drought they are unlikely to give birth to their young but with good rains the birthrate will increase greatly. Desert elephants have sand baths, sometimes adding their own urine (尿液)to make them muddy!

As we continue to overheat our weak planet, it can only be hoped that other animal species will adapt as extraordinarily well to change as the desert elephant.

Almost every child is scared of something, from monsters in the cupboard to dogs in the park. But the fact that such fears are common and normal doesn‘t mean they can be taken lightly. Kids experience fears and phobias (恐惧症)much more strongly than adults. And the influence of the fear can be physical as well as psychological (心理的). It can build up so they almost seem scared of everything-a kind of childhood anxiety. Dr. Creswell says:―Your child may always seem to expect the worst to happen and lack confidence in his or her ability to deal with any challenge.‖So don‘t make the same old mistake of treating them as if they‘re silly for being a―scaredy cat‖. Handing the fears is essential.

But you can approach it yourself, show them there is nothing to be afraid of, stroke (抚摸)it, and talk about the dog being friendly. Once your child dares to stroke a dog-one that‘s good with children, of course-then you should encourage them to carry on until they feel calmer, and reward them for?being brave‘.‖

Over the last 70 years, researchers have been studying happy and unhappy people and finally found out ten factors that make a difference. Our feelings of well-being at any moment are determined to a certain degree by genes. However, of all the factors, wealth and age are the top two.

Money can buy a degree of happiness. But once you can afford to feed, clothe and house yourself, each extra dollar makes less and less difference.

Researchers find that, on average, wealthier people are happier. But the link between money and happiness is complex. In the past half-century, average income has sharply increased in developed countries, yet happiness levels have remained almost the same. Once your basic needs are met, money only seems to increase happiness if you have more than your friends, neighbors and colleagues.

―Dollars buy status, and status makes people feel better,‖ conclude some experts, which helps explain why people who can seek status in other ways-scientists or actors, for example-may happily accept relatively poorly-paid jobs.

In a research, Professor Alex Michalos found that the people whose desires-not just for money, but for friends, family, job, health-rose furthest beyond what they already had, tended to be less happy than those who felt a smaller gap (差距)。Indeed, the size of the gap predicted happiness about five times better than income alone. ―The gap measures just blow away the only measures of income.‖says Michalos.

Another factor that has to do with happiness is age. Old age m ay not be so bad―Given all the problems of aging, how could the elderly be more satisfied?‖asks Professor Laura Carstensen.

In one survey, Carstensen interviewed 184 people between the ages of 18 and 94, and asked them to fill out an emotions questionnaire. She found that old people reported positive emotions just as often as young people, Some scientists suggest older people may expect life to be harder and learn to live with it, or they‘re more realistic about their time running out, older people have lea rned to focus on things that make them happy and let go of those that don‘t.

―A goodbye kiss to a husband or wife at the age of 85, for example, may bring far more complex emotional responses than a similar kiss to a boy or girl friend at the age of 20.‖

72.According to the passage, the feeling of happiness .

A.is determined partly by genes

B.increases gradually with age

C.has little to do with wealth

D.is measured by desires

73.Some actors would like to accept poorly-paid jobs because the jobs .

A.make them feel much better

B.provide chances to make friends

C.improve their social position

D.satisfy their professional interests

74.Aged people are more likely to feel happy because they are more .

A.optimistic

B.successful

C.practical

D.emotional

75.Professor Alex Michalos found that people feel less happy if .

A.the gap between reality and desire is bigger

B.they have a stronger desire for friendship

C.their income is below their expectation

D.the hope for good health is greater

E

lmagine you‘re at a party full of strangers. You‘re nervous. Who are these people? How do you start a conversation? Fortunately, you‘ve got a thing that sends out energy at tiny chips in everyone‘s name tag (标签). The chips send back name, job, hobbies, and the time available for meeting-whatever. Making new friends becomes simple.

This hasn‘t quite happened in real life. But the world is already experie ncing a revolution using RFID technology.

An RFID tag with a tiny chip can be fixed in a product, under your pet‘s skin, even under your own skin. Passive RFID tags have no energy source-batteries because they do not need it. The energy comes from the reader, a scanning device(装置),that sends out energy (for example, radio waves)that starts up the tag immediately.

Such a tag carries information specific to that object, and the data can be updateD.Already, RFID technology is used for recognizing each car or truck on the road and it might appear in your passport. Doctors can put a tiny chip under the skin that will help locate and obtain a patient‘s medical records. At a nightclub in Paris or in New York the same chip gets you into the VIP (very important person)section and pays for the bill with the wave of an arm.

Take a step back:10 or 12 years ago, you would have heard about the coming age of computing. One example always seemed to surface: Your refrigerator would know when you needed to buy more milk. The concept was that computer chips could be put everywhere and send information in a smart network that would make ordinary life simpler.

RFID tags are a small part of this phenomenon. ―The world is going to be a loosely coupled set of individual small device s, connected wirelessly,‖predicts Dr. J. Reich. Human right supporters are nervous about the possibilities of such technology. It goes too far tracking school kids through RFID tags,
