March 25 is the 17th Day of Education on the Safety of Elementary and Middle School Students. The theme of the day this year is to give students more knowledge about safety and improve their ability to avoid risks.
A report in China Education Daily says that school accidents kill more elementary and middle school students than anything else. The worst accidents come from food poisoning (中毒), fires, electricity and traffic.
How can we keep ourselves safe? Here are some tips.
On your way home or school: Wait for the green traffic light , and look left and right for cars before you cross the road. Dress in bright colors, so the drivers can see you easily. Don’t trust strangers in the street.
At school: when students around you begin to push, stand still and try to hold onto something, or stay in a corner until the crowd leaves. If you fall down in a moving crowd, cover your head with both hands. Lean to one side, curl up (卷起) your body and bend your legs.
Where there is a fire: Stay calm, follow teacher s’instructions, leave the classroom quickly and use a piece of clothes to cover your mouth and nose so that you don’t breathe in smoke. If your clothes catch fire, drop to the ground and roll from side to side to put out the fire.

When I asked my daughter which item she would keep: the phone, the car, the cooker, the computer, the TV or her boyfriend, she said “the phone”. Most people know that Marie Curie was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize,
and the first person to win it twice. However, few people know that she was also the mother of a Nobel Prize winner.
Born in September , 1897, Irene Curie was the first of the Curies’ two daughters. Along with nine other children whose parents were also famous scholars, Irene studied in their own school, and her mother was one of the teachers. She finished her high school education at the college of Sevigne in Paris.
Irene entered the University of Paris in 1914 to prepare for a degree in mathematics and physics. When World War I began, Irene went to help here mother, who was using X-ray facilities( 设备) to help save the lives of wounded soldiers. Irene continued the work by developing X-ray facilities in military(军事) hospitals in France and Belgrum. She was awarded a Military Medal bye the French government because of her services for the wounded soldiers.
In 1918, Irene became her mother’s assistant at the Curie Institute. In December 1924, Frederic Joliot joined the Institute, and Irene taught him the techniques required for his work. They soon fell in love and were married in 1926. Their daughter Helene was born in 1927 and their son Pierre five years later.
Like her mother, Irene combine family and career. Like her mother, Irene was awarded a Nobel Prize, along with her husband, in 1935. Unfortunately, also like her mother, she developed leukemia because of her work with radioactivity(辐射能). Irene Joliot-Curie died form leukemia (白血病) on March 17, 1956.
