Unit 1 English Learning

Lecture 1

Part 1 Listening comprehension

Objective: To distinguish /i:/, /i /, /e/, /?/

To identify figures.

Task 1

8' Pair work

Student A choose one word from the group and read it to his partner to see if his partner can identify the word.

Exchange the roles. B read and A listen.

Each student read five words.

Students' pronunciation/listening comprehension may cause failure in the identification.

2' Introduce some phonetic symbol

Let Ss read after T

5' Listen to the tape and underline the word they hear

Check the answer and correct students' pronunciation of some words.

10' listen to the conversation and choose the best answer

Play the voice once again and remind them pay special attention to the key word, such as the number and the items before or after it.

Task 2 topic-related listening

10' Make students realize while listening, they are getting known sth about a real person or one of their friend. In this case, the listening process may turn to be more interesting.

Ask students to read the questions and the choices to guess what's the topic of the conversation, in this way, the listening would be a little easier.

Play the sound and do the exercise

Listen it once again and check the answer by themselves, which may make them know that more practice is important. And students may become more confident in English learning.

10' Blank-filling

Give them time to read through the passage quickly so as to be familiar with the topic. Listen for the main idea at the first listening

Listen for detailed information at the second listening

Check for the spelling and grammar mistakes at the last listening.

Part 2 Reading

In last period, we have done some listening practice. We can find that as long as we practice more, we can do better. This is one of the tips to make our learning successful. Then what other factors do we need to make our learning successful?

8' Read passage 1 and do the exercise.

Remind them to pay special attention to the title(main idea), the first and last sentence of each paragraph or try to find the topic sentences.

Try to guess the meaning of the items they don't know.

7' Check the answer and explain why we should choose the one.

Explain some useful phrases.

Introduce the skills of doing reading comprehension.

Find the exact sentence in the passage.

Any decision Ss made should have enough foundation.

Passage 2

10' Read the questions and then read through the passage for the answer, look back at the key information to ensure our choices are right.

2' Check the answer.

15' Fast reading

Keep the 3 questions in bold in mind and read through the passage quickly to answer the questions.

After reading the passage, recall what has been read to answer the 3 questions from memory.

Do the exercises and look back at the text if necessary.

Call students to read their answers one by one. Guide them to read the related sentences if they make mistakes.

Lecture 2

Review what learned in last class

(8')Dictation:a saving box, bargain, on sale/in a sale, charge for, pay for, wallet, used-book, second-hand book, nervous, headphone.

If we want to become fluent in English, what should we do?

Remember more words

Besides speaking, to become fluent in English requires other 3 skills, namely listening, reading and writing. When we listen and read, we take in things, while we write or speak we produce things. We call the former two skills as receptive skill whereas the latter two as productive skill.

(15')Passage-reading

Read the passage loudly, and get familiar with the new words, underline them but not to note them with the translations.

(15')Word-pronunciation and familiarization.

Tell student to recognize syllable.

A syllable generally is in the form of "(consonant)+vowel+(consonant)". Here the bracket means the existence of "consonant" is changeable. So most of the time, we judge how many syllable the word is made up of according to the number of the vowels in the word.

When pronouncing a word, read syllable by syllable.

After Ss' reading by themselves, ask several students to read the word, correct them if necessary.

(10')Listen to the recording of the passage and think about the structure or new words. (17')Text organization

Tell Ss the text can be divided into 3 parts, then how to divide?

The first part will be Para. 1

The second part consist of Para 2- Para 6. Since Para. 6 is more closely related to the last paragraph than the next one.

The third part is the last paragraph.

Let Ss do the Ex. at the bottom of page13

Ask 3 Ss to read their answers, correct them if necessary.

Do the exercise and read it loudly together.

Assignment

Read the passage one more time and remember as many new words as they can.

Recite the summary of the passage in page 12 if possible

Let Ss take turns to read one sentence. And explain the useful words, expressions ans language points.

After each paragraph, ask s student to say the main idea of that paragraph or find the topic sentence.

Para 1: the author tells us if we want to be fluent in English, we should have 4 skills, listening, reading, speaking and writing.

Para 2: we should read actively as much as we can.

Para 3: We should listen actively and take notes.

Para 4: language is learnt through use or practice.

Para 5: we should be able to understand and use language correctly, most important we should be able to use language to realize the communication function.

Para 6: different people have different need.

Para 7: the benefit of learning English.

Vocabulary-building

(10') Task 1, let student say out the translations of the word in the table.

Call student to do the exercise one by one.

(10') Task 3, finish the exercises and choose several sentences to recite.

If “not only”is put in the front of the sentence, there should be a part reversion. That is we should add the auxiliary or the modal verb after "not only", at the same time, change the predicate word into its original form.
