I recently read about a wonderful act of kindness. It is about the country singer, Jan Howard, and it happened in the mid 1950`s. We can read it in her autobiography(自传)，“Sunshine and Shadow.”She suffered a lot with her three children, two of whom were still babies. She was forced to leave by her husband because he didn` t care about his family. At one point she suffered a nervous breakdown due to his cruel behavior.
She took her children with her and decided to leave the home, but she didn` t know the destination. This took place in a small town in Kansas, called Frontenac. She had very little gas in the car and no money at all, so she couldn` t even manage to make it out of Frontenac. As she used up the gas she got into a panic. She then went towards a house, not knowing who the owner was. She “put her pride in her pocket” and went to the door.
When she explained her situation to the elder woman who answered the door, the woman and her husband helped Jan Howard carry the children into the house. They allowed her to stay for two weeks until she received some money by mail from a relative. They fed and cared for Jan Howard and her children in the two weeks. This was one of the most exciting acts of kindness I have ever come across in my fifty years. These “angels” were named Henry and Sarah; they will always be warmly remembered by me for what they did for Jan Howard and her children.
I have even tried finding their children or grandchildren in Frontenac, but with no success. I just want to tell them what kind people I think Henry and Sarah are.

Nine -year-old Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Ismail took part in the Oscar ceremony on the red carpet where they smiled and repeated their disbelief in what was happening to them. Both of them were living a very different life and apparently loving every minute of it.
The two child stars who acted in Slumdog Millionaire（贫民窟的百万富翁)，know the Indian slum well. It is where they` ve grown up, and it` s where they will return at the end of their Hollywood dream trip.

At just 14 years of age, Tom Daley went to the Beijing Olympics as the second youngest male British Olympian ever.
Tom began diving at the age of 7 at his local diving club. With unbelievable talent and strong competitive spirit, Tom won the platform competition in 2004 in the National Junior group, making him the youngest winner of that event.
In 2005 he competed as a guest competitor in the Australian Elite Junior Nationals, and placed first in platform and second in 3m springboard in the 14-15 age group event.He met the qualification standards for the 2006 Commonwealth Games, but was not selected for the England team because of his age. In 2006 he was the under 18 British Champion in 10m Platform, 1m and
3m Springboard at the ASA Elite Junior National Champs held in Sheffield, and he placed second in the 10m Platform at the 2007 senior British Championships, which were held in December 2006.

A month later in March he claimed the European Men` s 10m Platform Individual title in Eindhoven, becoming Britain` s youngest ever diving Gold medalist in the process. He overcame the challenge of both the current World Champion and World Cup Champion to take Gold, following perfect dives in rounds four and five of the competition which earned him top scores from the judges.
At the 29th Beijing Olympic Games, Tom made the finals in both the 10m Platform and 10m Platform Synchro, which will be helpful to him in achieving his final goal of Gold at London` s 2012 Olympics.

Do you have a sore throat, a running nose and a headache? Do you keep coughing and sneezing? If you do, the chances are that you have a cold or perhaps flu--- but which one? Although both colds and flu are caused by viruses, they are very different illnesses.
Colds, which usually last about a week, affect the nose most. They commonly cause a running nose and sneezing. Sometimes, they caused a headache, a cough and slightly aching muscles.
Flu is a much serious illness and is caused by different group of viruses. People with flu usually get all the symptoms described above. If you have a cold or flu, you must always deal with used tissues carefully. Don’t leave dirty tissues on your desk or on the floor. Someone else has to pick these up and viruses could passed on. A Nobel winner in literature, US playwright Eugene O’ Neill called him “the father of American literature”. Twain is someone Americans are taught to love. Older relatives, English teachers and the media often praise him. But when you actually take the time to read the adventures of Tom Sawyer, which was first published 140 years ago, you find that his work is more wonderful than you could ever have imagined. The novel describes a young boy named Tom Sawyer growing up in a small town along the Mississippi River. He explores the countryside on a riverboat with his friends, falls in love with girls, starts secret clubs and searches for treasure. Twain’s idea of childhood is magical – a time of imagination, wonder and, of course, adventure. More importantly, through the eyes of Tom Sawyer, Twain cleverly makes fun of US culture. For example, Tom hates going to church, and Twain uses Tom to make fun of religion and its old traditions. “Often, the less there is to justify a traditional custom, the ha rder it is to get rid of it,” he writes in one chapter. Twain’s writing is full of these kinds of critical points about culture and politics. That’s why he is so loved in the US –he wasn’t afraid to state his opinions, and he did so clearly. For instance, Twain didn’t like US wars abroad. In 1900, after the US invaded the Philippines, Twain wrote in a newspaper article: “We do not intend to free, but to subjugate the people of the Philippines… We have gone there to conquer.” He also believed strongly in wo men’s right to vote in elections and gave a famous speech on the subject, called “Votes for Women”, in 1901.
