Dinners and Negotiations

That evening(November 28, 1943)Roosevelt was host at a steak and baked potato dinner prepared by his Filipino mess boys. Roosevelt mixed the pre-dinner cocktails himself. He put a large quantity of vermouth both sweet and dry, into a pitcher of ice, added a smaller amount of gin, stirred the concoction rapidly, and poured it out. It was a ceremony he enjoyed.

During the conversation, the President brought up the question of access to the Baltic Sea, but through a mistake in translation Stalin thought the President was referring to the Baltic States. Stalin said that if he understood the question rightly, he was in favour of assuring free navigation to and from the Baltic Sea.

Roosevelt was about to say something when in the flick of an eye great drops of sweat began beading off his face and he put a shaky hand to his forehead. The President had made no complaint, and none of us had detected on sign of discomfort Hopkins had the president wheeled to his room, where the White House doctor, Rear Admiral Ross T.Mcintire, made a quick examination. Hopkins came back and, to the relief of everybody, reported nothing more than a mild attack of indigestion.

After Roosevelt had retired, Churchill raised the question of Poland, illustrating with three matches what he hoped would happen to that country’s borders. He moved all three matches from east to west and said that was what should be done—meaning that much of the new Poland should be carved out of Germany and that the Soviet Union should retain the Polish territory seized on the basis of the Nazi-Soviet pact.

The next day, November 29, Roosevelt seemed alert as ever. Roosevelt and Stalin met privately again, primarily to discuss military operations. The conversation soon turned to the plan for a general world organization, an idea which Roosevelt had cherished for quite some time.

Although Stalin was always cautions about committing himself to any particular type of organization, he never showed any antagonism to the idea of a world body. Quite obviously he felt that it would be much more dangerous for the Soviet Union to be outside any world organization that to be in it, provided it, could block actins it did not like.

At the second plenary meeting, there was a real question whether the conference was going to be a success At a meeting of the military chiefs a few hours earlier, the British, at first hesitant, were raising additional objections to fixing

the date for the invasion of northern France, known by the code name Overlord. The debate was over whether to go ahead with Overlord in the spring of 1944, as the Russians and Americans favoured, or possibly to postpone the invasion for the sake of operations in the Mediterranean, as the British proposed.

Stalin pressed for a decision to launch Overlord in May, saying,“I don’t care if it is the 1st,15th, or 20th, but a definite date is important.”

Churchill, pausing to relight his cigar, said that he did not feel that the points of view were as far apart as they seemed. He said the British government was anxious to begin Overlord as soon as possible but did not want to neglect the great possibilities in the Mediterranean merely for avoiding a delay of a month or two.

When Churchill completed his argument, Stalin leaned forward and said he wanted to ask an indiscreet question:“Do the British really believe in Overlord, or are you only saying so to reassure the Russians?”

When Churchill glowered, chomped on his cigar, and refused to commit himself, the meeting ended without a decision.

The Russian dinner that evening was an unbelievable quantity of food. Stalin drank very little vodka and seemed to

prefer wine, which was understandable for a man from Georgia, a wine-producing land. Behind him stood an enormous Russian, about six foot four, in the white coat of a Russian waiter.

The dinner over, Hopkins went to see Churchill. He made clear the United States view on the assault across the Channel, which he said had been a firmly fixed view for many months past. The next morning, November 30, the British announced their agreement.

With the Overlord dispute settled, Churchill attempted to draw Stain out on the Far East, but the Russian was reluctant.

When the conference was over I was told by the President to hand out cigars and small favours to the staff that had helped us, and of course I hadn’t forgotten the Russian head waiter. But when I went into his room, a carton of cigarettes in my hand,I discovered the “head waiter” in the uniform of a Major General. I retired without indicating to that security officer what I had come for.

INSPECTOR HORNBERG VISITS A SCHOOL The classroom was very quiet. Outside, the leafless trees were white with the first snowfall. But not one pair of eyes stayed from the history books which twenty-five little girls were studying so earnestly. This was the year 1877, and the school was in Warsaw, Poland. A large part of Poland had been conquered by Russia. The Russia Tsar would not allow Polish children to study the history of their own country or even their own language. But here the teacher and her pupils were doing just that, although the Russians had spies everywhere in Warsaw. Among the children was Manya Sklodovska. She was a very bright pupil. She was deep in the book she was reading. Suddenly there came the faint sound of a bell. Manya listened fearfully. Was it the signal? Yes! Two long rings, two short rings. Every head came up. Quick hands grabbed all the Polish history books off the desks, and hid them away. The girls swiftly took sewing materials from their desks. They began to embroider little squares of cloth. The outer door opened. There stood Inspector Hornberg. Hornberg had been put in charge by the Russians of the private schools of Warsaw. He was a heavy man in a tight-fitting yellow and blue uniform. With him was Mademoiselle Sikorska, the head of the school. “ We have tow sewing classes a week, Mr. Inspector.” explained Mademoiselle Tupalska, the teacher “ I read to the children while they work.” “And what have you been reading to your pupils, Mademoiselle?”inspector Hornberg demanded. She held up her book “ Russian fairy tales.” She said. The inspector gave a grunt of approval. “Now,”he said, “I should like to question one of your pupils.” “Manya Sklodovska, please stand up.” The teacher said quietly. Manya rose from her seat without a word, trying not to tremble. “Recite the Lord’s Prayer in Russian.” Inspector Hornberg ordered. Manya recited the prayer in a low voice, careful not to show her feelings. “Now name the members of the Imperial Russian Family.” Manya gave the names. “now tell me.” Hornberg demanded, “ who is our ruler?”

I’ll help you and you’ll help me”“ That’s fine.” Said his friend, and they walked on. Suddenly a big bear ran out from behind a tree. The man who said he would help his friend at once got up a tree and hid himself among the leaves. The other man could not climb trees. So he threw himself on the ground, closed his eyes and pretended to be dead. The bear came up and sniffed at the man’s head. It put its nose close to his mouth and ears. The man held his breath. The bear thought he was dead and walked away, for bears never touch dead men. When the bear was gone, and all was safe, the man in the tree came down. With a smile, he asked his friend, “ What did the bear tell you when he put his nose so close to your ears?” “Well,” said his friend, “ the bear said,’Don’t trust those who leave their friends the moment they get into difficulty!” 2)译文: 两个朋友和熊 两个朋友在一道旅行,穿过一座森林。

No ,I don’t need sex。 I mean is “U N I sex”。可男主人公又听成了You and I SEX!!(更糟糕了)。男主人公兴奋无比说Very good ,Now?

They did not pay any attention. In the end, I could not bear it. I turned round again. 'I can't hear a word!' I said angrily. 'It's none of your business,' the young man said rudely. 'This is a private conversation!' THE DEVOTED FRIEND A soon as winter was over and the primrose began to bloom, the Miller went to visit little Hans. “Good morning, little Hans,” said the Miller. “ Good morning,” said Hans, smiling from ear to ear . “ And how have you been all winter?” asked the Miller. “ Well, really,” cried Hans, “ it is very kind of you to ask. I had a hard time, but now spring has come, and I am quite happy. All my flowers are growing well.” “ How lovely your primrose are!” exclaimed the Miller. “ Yes, they are very lovely.” Said Hans. “ I am going to sell them at the market, and buy back my wheelbarrow with the money.” “ Buy back you wheelbarrow? The means you have sold it. What a stupid thing to do!” “ Well, you see, I had a bad time last winter. So I first sold the silver buttons off my Sunday coat, and then I sold my silver chain, and then I sold my pipe. Finally I sold my wheelbarrow. But I am going to buy them all back again now!” “ Hans,” said the Miller, “ I shall give you my wheelbarrow. It is not in very good condition; one side is gone and there is something wrong with the wheel; but in spite of that I shall give it to you.” “ Well, really, it is very generous of you,” said little Hans. “ I have a plank of wood in the house and can easily repair it.” “ A plank of wood!” said the Miller. “ that is just what I want for my roof. There is a large hole in it and I must mend it . I have given you my wheelbarrow, so you should give me your plank.” “ Certainly ,” cried little Hans, and he ran into his house and brought the plank.
