In a college, not only can we study our majors, but also we can get a broad education of courses in the other fields. For example, I major in electronic engineering. Certainly I took a lot of courses concerning with my major because it enables me to have a deeper knowledge of it as well as prepares me for my future career. However those are not the only courses that I took. I also registered for other courses that I have some interest in, such as music, business. Though they have nothing to do with my major, they help to make versatile and well-rounded.College is also a place for fun. There are a variety of entertainments on campus. Every Saturday when I take a break from a week of study, I would always go with my friends to the cinema on campus to enjoy some fun and new movies. This helps relieve us a lot from the hard work. In addition, there are also a lot of organizations and clubs that I can join, such as dancing club, skating club. These clubs hold activities such as contest and party every now and then. So from time to time if I get overstressed, I would always join these activities to simply indulge myself a little bit.College is also a place for self-improvement. What I mean by self-improvement is that we get actively involved in the community. For example, I join organizations committed to help improve the conditions of local community. We would visit the home of the old to bring some fun with some performance and spend some time with them. We would also host educative project, like environment protection, and science and technology speech to local communities. Through these organizations and projects, not only do we bring benefit to the society, but also we learn a lot about society.As a college student right now, I think college life is amazing. It's an integration of education, entertainment and self-improvement. The only drawback would be that it's only 4 years. If possible, I would like it to be indefinite.TOPIC: many people believe that it is very important to make a large amount of money while others are satisfied to earn a comfortable living. Analyze each viewpoint and take a stand.Not long ago, there was a survey on my campus asking students what they expect for their future after they graduate. Almost 90% of them chose either to earn a comfortable living or to make a lot of money. Since I've been always dreaming of becoming a millionaire, I chose to make a lot of money.In my opinion, earning a comfortable living is a basic requirement for the future. Some people are not that ambitious. They just hope that they can find a decent job that enables them to support their family and their children's education. In face of this global economic crisis, more and more people are going unemployed. Therefore lowering their standard of living would be a good option for them. I guess a lot of people choose to earn a comfortable living because they realize demanding something more is simply too hard to come true under current circumstance.However I chose the other option because I think earning a lot of money can give myself more opportunities. For example, if I have a lot of money, then on one hand I have more chances to meet with other rich people. Therefore I have more opportunities to do business with them and attract more investment. Eventually I will be able to make more and more money. On the other hand, if I don't want to work that hard anymore, I can retire at anytime. I don't need to worry about supporting families and myself as long as I have a strong economic base. What's more, it will enable me to have a very decent living.Earning a lot of money not only offers me more opportunities, but also benefits other people.I always sympathize with people living in poor countries. They are so poor that they don't even have right to ask for their basic living requirement, such as food and water. If I had enough money, I would donate money to them directly to help them. Of course it would not help everyone, much less solve the overall problem, but at least some people will benefit from this. In addition, I can also raise a fund to provide them education. This way they will have appropriate knowledge to improve their own situation.In this competitive world, having a lot of money surely makes me more competent. However the fact that it allows me to help more people is what makes more appealing to me.TOPIC: describe one of your family's important traditionsOne of my family's important traditions would be the way how we celebrate our most important festival--the Spring Festival. Spring Festival is the New Year Day according to China's lunar calendar. As a result we will have a big family get-together and do all kinds of relaxing things. Meanwhile it's also a time for us to look backward to the past and also look forward to the future.The most outstanding thing that i would like to mention about how my family's Spring Festival is the family get-together. All family members would come back home no matter how far they are working, even in another country because this is the only time of the year that family members can be so completely present. We also serve a big dinner with special dishes of special meanings. For example some dishes have the meaning of good health, some means good fortune, and others are imposed the meaning of good looking. During the evening when it's all dark outside, we would also do the fireworks. It's a very affectionate moment when people gather together amazed by the beauty of the sparkles.While we are having fun on this special day, we would not forget family members who have passed away. There is always a small ceremony where we will join a moment of memorial silence.I think this is a very good tradition because we demonstrate our respect to the dead and that we will not forget about the past.In addition to pray for the passed away family members, we would also pray for our own future. This often takes place at midnight at a nearby temple where family members take turns to pray for themselves, their families and their friends. We would also wish that our goal for the coming year would come true. For example, I prayed this year that I will be able to get a great grade for the Toefl test.I like these traditions that my family have for Spring Festival, I think it not only serves the purpose of having fun, but also it reflects the gist of this festival. That is unity,tribute ot the past and hope for the future.TOPIC: what characteristics a good leader should have?From the very beginning of human history, there are numerous examples of good leaders. They all have different kinds of characteristics that enabled them to become good leaders in their periods of times. As to this period of time in which I am living now, I think a good leader must first of all care about the people of his country, and then he must also be able to deal with both domestic and international situations.Caring about people, as far as I know, is the universal characteristic of all good leaders. People endorse a leader when they feel they are one of the leader's concerns while people overturn a leader when they feel they are out of this leader's mind. Tyrants are in no way good leaders because they never pay attention to their subjects. Therefore people tend to rebel them and that's why it is so common in history that Tyrants usually didn't end up well. Fortunately we have a good leader of China right now, our Premier Wen Jiabao. He stated that the people of China is his ultimate concern and he did just as this. When the huge earthquake hit China last year, he went to the front line to take command of the rescue work immediately. He encouraged the hard-hit population and fought with them. As a result, the relationship between him and the civilians are consolidated. Thus people will support him even more.Ability is also a major criteria to judge whether or not a leader is good, especially the ability to deal with domestic and international issues. Domestically speaking, a good leader must be able to coordinate among different parties, resolve conflicts among various factions, so that the administration can operate efficiently. Internationally speaking, a good leader is one that can defend his country in situations where a conflict is involve d between his country and another. Also a good leader can propose international deeds on behalf of his country, for example, free trade agreement, culture exchange, to name two.Every nation in this world needs a good leader to lead the country to a brighter future. Though there are still other important traits that a good leader must have, I think the primary ones should be that he cares about his people and he has the capability to lead to the country domestically and internationally.TOPIC: which historical event you think that is most important to your country?With regard to the effects that a historical event can have on my country, i think what rank the very first would be the establishment of modern China, the birth day of the People's Republic of China. This historic moment allows the later on economic prosperity, guaranteed the improvement of people's living standard, and raise China's international role.The establishment of China means China has ended the decades of war, providing a stable domestic situation for the development of economy. At the time when China was founded, it was among the poorest countries in the world. However decades after, we successfully transformed China from a mainly agrarian nation to a mostly industrialized nation, resulting in the soring of our GDP which ranked the 4th among all the nations in the world last year.What's more,more and more foreign investment are being absorbed into China to help build our country, thus ensuring further economic prosperity.What comes with the development of economy is the improvement of people's living standard. In terms of transportation, people now travel by plane instead of horse or on foot decades ago. In terms of transportation, people now can communicate with cell phone or on the internet instead of writing letters which is not effective at all. China is also a permanent member of the UN Security Council which is the most powerful organization within the body of UN. This further enables us to have a voice in the world and also allows us to play a positive role in the world.At the very moment that our first president declared the foundation of modern China, a new chapter has opened. This is a chapter of prosperity, humanity and international acknowledgement.TOPIC: some people say human activities have earth a better place to live, while others say human activity has done just the opposite, what you think?Human activity has, without a doubt, made our Earth a much better place to live. However it is also undeniable that human activity has also caused damages to our Mother planet. In this sense I would like to say that human activity is a two edge sword.For the past hundreds of years, our living stand has improved considerably with the development of science and technology. If it were possible to take a person ,say 200 years ago, to today, he would absolutely have been astound with all kinds of things that was regarded as impossible during his time. For example, people at his time thought flying in the sky for human beings was only, and it could only be a dream. Now we made this dream come true. Travelling by plane is nothing but a regular thing for people now. It makes it possible for us to travel from China to the US in less than a day while before plane was inve nted, people didn’t even dream of this. This high speed travelling between countries and continents enables and stimulates globalization.There is another factor that contributes to globalization. That is the wireless communication like mobile phone and the internet. Mobile phone allows us to talk with people whenever and wherever we are. On the other hand, the internet can provide us a sea of information within a short time. This easy access to information has made our life, work, and study more convenient and efficient.Despite these benefits above, there are indeed various types of problems that human activity had caused. The most outstanding one is the unbalanced situation. Our industrialization has produced not only too much goods, but also too much pollution. The sky over the cities is no longer cle ar blue, but instead it appears grey. The water in the river is no longer clean. Instead it’s filled with all kinds of waste, leading to a huge amount of death of fish which used to live in the river. There are also other serious damages that we have imposed on Earth, such as deforestation, desertification and the increasing extinction of animals, to name a few.We are living in a new era of human history. We are enjoying the benefits brought about by the development of science and technology. However, if we ignore the damages that are occuring at the same time because of human activity, we will soon lose this high quality of living standard that we have created for ourselves.TOPIC: what you learn at school is more important than that you learn outside schoolWhile education at school is essential and important, I think the knowledge we acquire outside of school is more vital. Knowledge we learn outside of school is usually more realistic, more useful and what's more important, it also leads us to success.Education at school is usually theories that can hardly be applied to our real life. They are often abstract and students do not have any idea as to how they can benefit us, or how to use them. However when we actually practice what we learned in school in our jobs, we would gradually grasp the knowledge of how to apply things in text books to real situation. This knowledge is usually called experience. It's generally accepted that experience is something you never learn in text books. Thus it's more valuable than what we learned at school.When we are studying in school, we kind of confined ourselves in a small field, particularly school. The people we deal with at school are either students or teachers. It's really hard for us to broaden our eye horizon and establish a wide relationship. But once we graduate from school and begin to work, we will meet different kinds of people and learn how to deal with them appropriately. Further it enables us to have a wide social relationship network. Having a good and wide social relationship is important in today's society, because we simply can't live by ourselves. Even the most educated person in the world needs a well developed social network to survive. In terms of this, knowledge we learn out of school is more beneficial.Finally, what we learn at school cannot guarantee us success. Instead, there are lots of cases where people who don't have that much education finally have extraordinary achievement. Bill Gates is one of them. He didn't finish his college education in Harvard University. Instead, he dropped out half way. Later outside school, he founded Microsoft and eventually became the richest person in the world. What this example shows us is that there are more important things outside that school cannot offer us, that is opportunity.Throughout our life time, we only spend a small portion of our time at school while the vast majority is spent outside school. As a result, we learned more outside school. So with regard to this leverage, knowledge we acquire outside school is the most important.TOPIC: Many people have learned a foreign language in their own country, others have learned a foreign language in the country in which it is spoken. Which is better?Although I have never been to an English speaking country to study English, I think the best option to study a foreign language is to go to the country. Based on the hardships that I have experienced when I study English in China, I think going to a foreign country to study that country's language have several advantages. It provides us good motivation; makes the learning a lot easier and also allow us to learn better.Being in a foreign country is a drive for us to learn foreign language. Imagine we are in the US. There is no way that we can survive there if we don't understand English at all. Therefore in order to survive, we have to be determined to study English. This motivation would be the strongest because outcome determines whether we can make a living or not. However, if we study in our own country, we will never be as motivated as in a foreign country. We wouldn't be worried about being isolated because everyone else around you speaks your language. We students may be concerned about our English test scores, but that will never match the motivation for survival.Being in a foreign country also provides us a best environment in which we can learn a foreign language. First, everyone in this country speaks this language which means we can learn a lot while talking with them. What's more while we are talking with them, we not only enhance the knowledge of the language in our brain; but also we can develop a very wonderful speaking because the people to whom we are talking are the best models for us to follow. A major problem for people to study a foreign language in their own country is that they do not have chance to interact with people using the language. As a result, it's hard for them to master the language.At last, while we are in a foreign country, we are in direct contact with the core of their culture. This is a great chance to get in touch with something that we don't normal see or hear in our home country, making their culture a lot easier to understand. I remember when I was learning English there are a lot of words that refer to something that simply do not exist in China. So it's hard to interpret them correctly, much less use them.I have been studying English for almost 10 years to arrive at this level. However if I were given the chance to study English in an English speaking country, I think I would have only spent 2 years to match up with my current English ability.TOPIC: agree or disagree that there are times lying is acceptable.Truth is what everyone wants, however truth can't possibly always be good and satisfactory. As long as I'm concerned, there are many occasions in which lying is better than being honest. Therefore i agree that there are times that lying is acceptable.Lying is acceptable when the person who lies has good will. I would appreciate a lie if it is intended to avoid hurting me because I know the "liar" did this for my sake. I knew a young mother who had a 6 year-old girl. Her father died at an accident when she was just 4. However her mother didn't tell her that her Dad had passed away, instead, she told her that her dad had gone to a far away place and wouldn't come back in a near term. Obviously this young mother lied, but this was quite a benevolent lie. She did this to avoid any untreatable trauma to her daughter. It wouldn't make sense to say that what she did is unacceptable.Lying is also acceptable when the lie doesn't result in bad things. I have read a story in the newspaper. There was a man who was seeking management position in a supermarket. He lied in his resume that he used to be a manager in another supermarket. He got hired because of his so-called experience. However he worked very hard every day, and actually did a very good, even unparalleled job at this position. Everyone was pleased with what he did. So in my opinion, this lie is also acceptable, as long as it benefits everyone.There is another kind of lying that is unavoidable because it will have disastrous impact once revealed. This kind of lies often has something to do with a person's job definition or quality, such as military officers, national agents. They have information that will often determine the fate of their nation. They have to lie very often, on behalf of their nation and their people. Instead of saying it's unacceptable, I'd rather salute them because it's an honored job.Lying, under most circumstances, is not good. And I certainly would not promote lying. But I think we should be clear about one point, that is, lying is not necessarily always unacceptable. To say whether or not a lie is unacceptable depends on the specific conditions.TOPIC: are dramas, music, and art equally important to that of other scientific research?A lot of parents in China thought that Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry were the most important subjects in the world. As a result, they only cared about their children's performance on these 3 subjects. I don't think this idea is advisable because after all we need to educate our children comprehensively. Therefore I think that subjects like music, art and drama are a inalienable part of children's basic education.Music, art and drama are all beneficial to helping shape and mold children's personalities. First, playing good music requires children to constantly do exercise and practice works. This is definitely a good way to teach them patience. Second, creating good arts requires children to have innovative thoughts and this is good means to enhance their creativity. Third, in order to perform a good drama show, children will have to understand this drama and the characters they are playing as well as cooperate with other roles. They will learn the importance of expression and cooperation.There are also chances that children might become a musician, artist, or famous actor in the future. If children have demonstrated special interest or talent in these subjects, parents can train and educate them professionally, and eventually they may be the future masters. Throughout history there have been numerous examples of famous musicians, artists and actors who have been trained from when they were very young. They had demonstrated to us that teaching children these subjects at a very young age is necessary.Finally these subjects can bring benefits to students in other subjects they study, such as Math, physics and Chemistry. Playing music is an excellent way for people to relax. Whenever we feel tired about numbers, we can play music. It is proved to be a very efficient way to relieve the stress we have. Thus it will make it easier for us to go on with other subjects.The most important merit about these subjects to our society as a whole is that they stimulate and help preserve our precious cultures. A lot of parents today have already recognized these subjects' role and are encouraging their children to take these courses. I think this is a good trend to follow.。
