When she looked ahead, Florence Chadwick saw nothing but a solid wall of fog. Her body was numb(麻木的). She had been swimming for nearly sixteen hours. Already she was the first woman to swim the English Channel in both directions. Now, at age 34, her goal was to become the first to swim from Catalina to the California coast.

On the fourth of July morning in 1952, the sea was like an ice bath and the fog was so thick that she could hardly see her support boats. Sharks swam towards her lonely figure, only to be driven away by rifle shots. Against the frigid grip of the sea, she struggled on—hour after hour—while millions watched on national televisions.

Alongside Florence in one of the boats, her mother and her trainer offered encouragement. They told her it wasn’t much farther. But all she could see was fog. They urged her not to give up. She never had…until then. Whith only a half mile to go, she asked to be pulled out.

Still thawing(使暖和)her chilled body several hours later, she told a reporter, “Look, I’m not excusing myself, but if I could have seen land I might have made it.” It was not fatigue or even the cold water that defeated her. It was the fog. She was unable to see her goal.

Two months later, she tried again. This time, despite the same dense fog, she swam with her faith intact(完好无损的) and her goal clearly pictured in her mind. She knew that somewhere behind that fog was land and this time she made it! Florence Chadwick became the first woman to swim the Catalina Channel, eclipsing(超越) the men’s record by two hours!

China’s successful launch of its second manned spaceship ShenzhouⅥhas drawn world-wide applause. It has become the third nation in the world capable of putting men into space.

It is widely believed home and abroad that the latest progress made by China will surely improve national cohesiveness(内聚力)and make the country’s 1.3 billion people more confident in their future in terms of social and economic progress.

However, some people in and outside China describe China’s manned space program as a prestige project which yields little economic benefits.

They argue that billions of US dollars spent on the decade-old space program may better used for poverty relief and education as millions of Chinese have a poor living and many children cannot afford basic schooling. However, mankind does need to make use of space resources for sustainable human development.

Space technology has become increasingly important for the exploration and peaceful use of space resources due to the shrinking reserve of natural resources on the Earth.

Lunar reserve of isotope(同位素) helium(氦) 3 is sufficient for human need for about 10,000 years, which is attractive to the mankind being troubled by high oil prices and limited oil reserve.

China has benefited from the dividend of its investment in space sector. Space technology has become an indispensable part of people’s daily life, such as weather forecast, telecommunications, disaster reduction, and resources prospecting.

Striving hard to feed its 1.3 billion people and more in the future, China has been developing improved species of crops on the bases of space technology, mostly through recoverable satellites and spacecrafts.

Information obtained from ShenzhouⅢand ShenzhouⅣin Earth observation has been used for maritime pollution control and desertification control projects, which is useful for China and other parts of the world.
