Walt Whitman was born on May 31, 1819, in New York. When Walt was eleven years old, he had to help support the family. He was mainly self-taught. He liked reading very much, and wrote simple poems early in his life.

In 1836, at the age of 17, he began his career as a teacher in a school. He permitted his students to call him by his first name, and created learning games for them in arithmetic (算术) and spelling. He continued teaching at school until 1841, when he turned to journalism as a full-time career. He worked as an editor for a number of Brooklyn and New York papers. From 1846 to 1847 Whitman was the editor of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. Whitman went to New Orleans in 1848 and in that city he had become interested in the French language. Many of his poems were written in French.

Between 1848 and 1855 he developed a new style of poetry. When his Leaves of Grass was published in July, 1855, the Dean of American Literature thanked him for "the wonderful gift". Music was one of the major sources of Whitman’s inspiration. Many of his four hundred poems contain musical terms, the names of instruments, and the names of composers. He insisted that music was "greater than wealth and greater than buildings, ships, and paintings." In his final essay written one year before his death in 1891, he summed up his struggles of thirty years to write Leaves of Grass.

When Lilacs Last in the Door yard Bloom’d and O Captain! My Captain! (1866) are two of his most famous poems. As a poet who was singing of life and himself, Whitman is today considered as one of the greatest American poets.

"Surfing the Internet, playing games and hanging out on social networks are important for teens’development," a large study of online use has revealed recently. More than 800 teens and parents took part in the three-year US project.

"They are learning the technological skills needed in the contemporary world. They are learning how to communicate online, create a home page and post links. All these things were regarded as highly sophisticated 10 years ago but young people today think them a piece of cake," said the report’s author, Dr. Mimi Ito.

Over the period of the study, researchers observed users for more than 5,000 hours. The aim of the project was to make out how teens use social media to socialize (交际), learn and relax.

Dr. Ito said that connecting online with friends through social networks such as My Space and Face book was where teens now "hang out", compared to the usual public places like shopping malls, streets and parks. The Internet provides teens with the opportunities to explore their own creativity and "take a deep dive into a subject".

The researchers discovered a digital divide between those who have access to the Web and those who do not. "The quality of access is what matters for some kids who have to just rely on the library and the school to go online. It is often limited and has blocks on access to certain sites," said Dr. Ito.

Teens don’t want their parents to know much about their Internet activities

and most parents know very little about what their kids are doing online. It is therefore necessary for parents to reconsider the role the Internet plays in teens’development, learn about it, and offer their help when needed.

Connie Yowell, the MacArthur Foundation’s educa tion director, concluded that learning today is becoming increasingly networked, which creates a new way to look at how young people are being and should be taught.

60. The underlined word "sophisticated" in the second paragraph probably means

"_______".

A. convenient

B. experienced

C. difficult

D. perfect

61. According to the passage, the Internet is helpful in the following ways EXCEPT______.

A. learning technological skills

B. keeping in touch with friends

C. becoming more sociable

D. doing well in computer science studies

62. Dr. Ito suggests that parents should _________.

A. make sure their kids can go online all the time

B. keep a close eye on their children’s online activities

C. refresh their knowledge about Internet functions

D. decide which websites their children are allowed to visit

63. We can learn from the passage that ________.

A. ways that teens communicate have changed

B. over 5,000 teens and parents took part in the three-year project

C. the project aims to teach teens how to use the Internet properly

D. the Internet has already been widely used in education

Sarah: I bought Little Touch Leap Pad for my grandson who lives 3 states away. Though I haven’t seen him learn with the toy, I can imagine how he uses it for the advertisement gives very detailed information, and my daughter thinks very highly of it. I was happy to find out that she received the toy in 3 days... I thought it would take a week or so.

Mike: This product appeals more to the parents than to the babies and the quality is unacceptable. When my baby finally got old enough to play with it, it only worked a few weeks before it broke down. "First aid should be a compulsory(必修的) part of study," St. John Ambulance has urged ministers.

The charity carried out a survey of more than 1,500 school children, of whom seven out of ten said they would not know how to help in an emergency.

First aid is a compulsory subject for Welsh and Northern Irish pupils, but in English and Scottish schools it is an optional(可选择的) part of the curriculum. The

government said that it intended to bring England into line by 2011.

An estimated 400,000 young people are injured each year at school, according to the first aid charity. Its survey suggested that almost the same proportion(比例) of primary and secondary school children who said they would not know how to help someone in need of first aid would like to learn.

The British Red Cross also argues that all schools should teach first aid, because the UK falls behind the rest of Europe when it comes to life-saving skills. According to the charity, some 80% of people in Scandinavian countries and Germany have first aid skills, compared with 7% in the UK.

The British Red Cross also estimates that of the 5.5 million people who visit Emergency Departments for Accidents each year, about 3 million suffer from injuries that would benefit from some form of first aid treatment.

Elaine Howlings, who co-ordinates school training for St. John Ambulance, said the "overwhelming message" from the survey was that the children surveyed were scared by the fact that they would not know what to do in an emergency.

She said: "They wanted to be able to help —helping their friends when they fell off walls or helping people that had been involved in car accidents."

68. According to the survey, ________.

A. England will make first aid compulsory in school in 2011

B. all the students without first aid skills would like to learn them

C. about 1,000 children surveyed don’t know how to do first aid

D. more secondary school students want to learn first aid than the primary school

ones

69. Why does the British Red Cross think that all schools should teach first aid?

A. First aid can save lives in a lot of situations.

B. People are eager to learn life-saving skills.

C. About 400,000 young people are injured each year at school.

D. The UK is far behind in life-saving skills in Europe.

70. What can be inferred from the passage?

A. St. John Ambulance is a famous hospital.

B. 5.5 million people suffer from injuries each year.

C. First aid must be taught in Scottish schools.

D. The survey is a good warning to urge students to learn first aid.

书面表达(One possible version)

Last Sunday, I went with David, my friend from Australia, to the Olympic Park for a picnic. Unluckily, David injured his right foot on our way to the park.

I’d just learned about first aid recently. So I dialed 120 immediately and performed first aid. First, I put his foot on a comfortable position. Then I rushed to a shop nearby and fetched bags of ice, and carefully applied the ice to the injury. Fifteen minutes later, the swelling seemed to have gone down a little. Then I covered the injury with a bandage.

Ten minutes later an ambulance arrived, and took David to the hospital.

But he became inspired when he tho ught about helping ordinary people exposed to cholera. This was the deadly dise ase of its day. Neither its cause nor its cure was understood. So many thousand s of terrified people died every time there was an outbreak. John Snow wanted t o face the challenge and solve this problem. He knew that cholera would never b e controlled until its cause was found. He became interested in two theories that possibly explained how cholera ki lled people. The first suggested that cholera multiplied in the air. A cloud of dangerous gas floated around until it found its victims. The second suggested that people absorbed this disease into their bodies with their meals. From the stomach the disease quickly attacked the body and soon the affected person die d. John Snow suspected that the second theory was correct but he needed eviden ce. So when another outbreak hit London in 1854, he was ready to begin his enqu iry. As the disease spread quickly through poor neighbourhoods, he began to gat her information. In two particular streets, the cholera outbreak was so severe that more than 500 people died in ten days. He was determined to find out why. First he marked on a map the exact places where all the dead people had liv ed. This gave him a valuable clue about the cause of the disease. Many of the d eaths were near the water pump in Broad Street (especially numbers 16, 37, 38 a nd 40). He also noticed that some houses (such as 20 and 21 Broad Street and 8 and 9 Cambridge Street) had had no deaths. He had not foreseen this, so he made further investigations. He discovered that these people worked in the pub at 7 Cambridge Street. They had been given free beer and so had not drunk the water from the pump. It seemed that the water was to blame. But he became inspired when he tho ught about helping ordinary people exposed to cholera. This was the deadly diseas e of its day. Neither its cause nor its cure was understood. So many thousands of terrified people died every time there was an outbreak. John Snow wanted to face the challenge and solve this problem. He knew that cholera would never be contr olled until its cause was found. He became interested in two theories that possibly explained how cholera kille d people. The first suggested that cholera multiplied in the air. A cloud of dangero us gas floated around until it found its victims. The second suggested that people absorbed this disease into their bodies with their meals. From the stomach the dis ease quickly attacked the body and soon the affected person died. John Snow suspected that the second theory was correct but he needed evide nce. So when another outbreak hit London in 1854, he was ready to begin his en quiry. Many of the de aths were near the water pump in Broad Street (especially numbers 16, 37, 38 an d 40). Both she and her daughter died of cholera after drinking the water. With this extra evidence John Snow was able to announce with certaint y that polluted water carried the virus. To prevent this from happening again, John Snow suggested that the source o f all the water supplies be examined. The water companies were instructed not to expose people to polluted water any more. Finally "King Cholera" was defeated. COPERNICUS’ REVOLUTIONRRY THEORY
