Everyone at Pacsafe is always eager to get out in the world and enjoy new cultures, food, and experiences. With that in mind we asked a few of our top travel bugs for their best travel destination recommendations for 2019. They also included their favorite Pacsafe bag to take on the trip. Enjoy and hopefully get some ideas for your own globe - trotting adventure.

Sri Lanka - Alison Hanko, Global Marketing Director

I'm going to Sri Lanka this summer holiday and can't wait. It's close to Hong Kong where I live and I've always wanted to go. The food is supposed to be amazing. It seems really relaxing and I really want to do the Kandy to Badulla train ride, which looks just stunning. We've booked a good mix of beaches, some time in a safari tent to hopefully see elephants in the wild.

For my bag, I'll most likely take the Quiksilver 40L Pack because it has the built-in wet pack for my bikinis. It's also a great size for a week-long trip in a warm climate.

Japan - Ben Barras, Creative Director

Japan is definitely my best travel destination recommendation. The culture, the streets, the architecture, the inspiration you get from all of that is amazing. The food is also fascinating. It's where I'm most planning to go. Tokyo obviously, but also visiting the mountains. You can go snowboarding, which I haven't done for years.

I have a Vibe 25L Backpack which you can pack a lot in. The thing I like most about it is that it's compact, but still fits plenty in. I'll pair that up with a larger travel bag for the rest of my things and use the backpack to get around day to day.

Berlin - Phil Hayes, Executive VP of Global Design

For me, it's definitely Berlin. I'm particularly excited about the fashion, which I hear is pretty full on. Also the art galleries and history. Food, nightlife. Everything I've heard about Berlin is pretty cool, so I'm going to suck as much as I can out of it. World's Global Style Network had the Berlin shopping list that came out recently, so I'm going to follow that through as well.

Bag wise, it will be the Quiksilver X Collab Bag. It's the 25L Anti-theft Backpack. It's normally my go-to bag for city trips because it's super easy to lock on the plane and in bars, and it's just the right amount of space.

(1)Which of the Pacsafe bag is a good choice for beach travel?

A. The Quiksilver 40L Pack.

B. The Vibe 25L Backpack.

C. The Quiksilver X Collab Bag.

(2)If you are interested in fashion, which destination should you choose?

A. Sri Lanka.

The latest data from the Office for National Statistics shows that one in every 12 kids is living in homes where no one has worked for at least a year. That may be due to unemployment or issues such as sickness or disability that mean they can't work, and aren't required to. This is known as being in a "long term workless" family.

The issues faced by children in workless families have very bad influence on their development and education, limiting their future employment prospects, and reducing their opportunities to succeed throughout their lives.

Not only does worklessness reduce family income, it can also damage families' health and stability, and thus destroy children's development. This is because many workless families are held back by disadvantages such as debt, drug and alcohol dependency, and by homelessness. Suffering from the family problems, many children face a greater and greater possibility of repeating the poor outcomes of their parents. Government research has shown that children in workless families are almost twice as likely not to reach the expected level at all stages of their education. For example, three-quarters of children from families where no one works failed to reach the expected level at General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE), compared to around half of children in lower-income working families.

So attention should be paid to children in out-of-work homes. Having working parents means a child is more likely to do better at school, to have better health, education and development, and also means they are less likely to fall into crime.

But for some families, worklessness, or not employment, is the norm. They just choose not to work. These families often face huge barriers to getting on with their lives but they take the opportunities offered by the society. Parents' ability to work is frustrated by issues like low skills or poor mental or physical health, or drug and alcohol dependency, leaving children without the stability they need.

We all want to help workless families with complex problems so that their children can take advantage of the opportunities in Britain. We all want parents to have the chance to go out to earn a living and to enjoy the pleasure of work, so that their children can benefit from the good examples of working parents. In doing so, we should know the need to understand the complex issues that some families face and to develop a new approach to deal with poverty. Because the

root causes are not financial. It is about helping families overcome the problems they face so that they can go as far as their talents and hard work will take them. We shouldn't retreat from acting to deal with disadvantages, because we know the costs of inaction to individuals, communities and society.

(1)According to the author, children in workless families may .

A. have better performance at school

B. take chances to go out to earn a living

C. be more able to deal with their problems

D. live the same lifestyles that their parents had (2)The underlined word "norm" in the fifth paragraph probably means .

A. a huge barrier

B. a turning point

C. a typical standard

D. an unusual event (3)In the last paragraph the author mainly talked about .

A. raising of social welfare

B. solutions to the problems

C. development of the society

D. reforming of the government

(4)The main purpose of the passage is to .

A. introduce a study on children in workless families

B. appeal to the readers to help children in workless families

C. present a new approach to deal with poverty of workless families

D. compare children's performances in workless families and low-income ones

根据最后一段中的“ In doing so, we should know the need to understand the complex issues that some families face and to develop a new approach to deal with poverty. Because the root causes are not financial. (4)考查推理判断。根据最后一段中的“We all want to help workless families w ith complex problems so that their children can take advantage of the opportunities in Britain. We all want

How was your day today? If it was just sort of OK, with nothing much happening, then Scott Shaffer wants to hear from you. Mr Shaffer is the editor of the Journal of Mundane Behaviour. "We can learn a lot about the way that society works by examining normal patterns of behavior," he says. "All the ordinary decisions we make and ordinary things we do are society in action." The idea that social scientists should "study the unmarked", in Mr Shaffer's words, has also spread to historians. Traditionally, most history has been written as the story of greatness. It is all about great ideas, great people and great economic and social forces changing the way that millions of people live for ever. Albert Einstein's theory of relativity changed the way that we look at the universe. But has he been of more benefit to humanity than the unknown person who invented the first really comfortable shoe? Try thinking great thoughts when your feet hurt.

In recent years, books of micro-history have been a great success with the public. Most micro historians like to relate their subject to wider developments in society. According to historian Catherine Gallagher, the potato was once a matter of great argument. Supporters pointed out that it could grow cheaply and easily and help feed the poor. Opponents said that this would lead to the poor becoming more powerful, since they did not have to spend every hour working to feed themselves. It seems that European socialism started with an argument about vegetables. British historian Colin Jones wants us to look at pictures painted hundreds of years ago. He wants us to notice the fact that nobody smiles in these pictures. Compare that with today, when everyone smiles for the camera and refusing to smile is seen as an unfriendly act. It is all because of dentistry, he says. Once people were able to look after their teeth, they began to smile and the world became a happier place.

Whether stories like this are true or not, they put ordinary people at the center of history. Most of us are not going to change the world in a big way. But we might be able to do something that makes life a bit easier for other people. And maybe one day a historian will come along and write the story. It is something to get excited about, though perhaps not very excited.

(1)Why does the author tell you to try thinking great thoughts when your feet hurt? A. To show the ordinary is necessary. B. To show history is created by the unknown.

C. To show great thoughts are unnecessary.

D. To show greatness comes from the ordinary.(2)What was the most important thing about the argument about the potato?

A. It helped the poor to feed themselves.

B. It helped to spend less money on food.

C. It brought about a struggle against the rich.

D. It led to great changes in society.

(3)Why didn't people smile in pictures painted hundreds of years ago?

A. They lived a hard life.

B. Their teeth looked terrible.

C. They were not friendly.

D. They preferred to look serious.

(4)What is mainly discussed in the text?

A. The ways to make life easier.

B. The importance of the ordinary in history.

C. The increasing interest in micro-history.

D. Unknown people who invented small things.

【答案】(1)A

(2)D

Ronald Reagan ever said, "It's true hard work never killed anybody, but I figure, why take the chance?" To some extent, extra effort seems to be self-defeating. Studies suggest that, after 50 hours a week, employee productivity falls sharply.

But that doesn't stop some managers from demanding that workers stay chained to their desk for long periods. Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba, recently praised the "996" model, where employees work from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., 6 days a week, as a "huge blessing". Apparently, presenteeism (出勤主义) is the curse of the modern office worker.

There will be days when you do not have much to do: perhaps because you are waiting for someone else in a different department, or a different company, to respond to a request. As the clock ticks past 5 pm, there may be no purpose in staying at your desk. But you can see your boss hard at work and, more importantly, they can see you. So you make an effort to look busy.

Some of this may be a self-continuing cycle. If bosses do not like to go home before their employees, and employees fear leaving before their bosses, everyone is trapped. Staff may feel that they will not get a pay rise, or a promotion, if they are not seen to be putting in maximum effort. This is easily confused with long hours. Managers, who are often no good at judging employees' performance, use time in the office as a measure. The consequence is often wasted effort. We pretend to work and managers pretend to believe us. Rather than work hard, you try to make bosses think that you are. Leaving a jacket on your office chair, walking around purposefully with a notebook and sending out emails at odd hours are three of the best-known tricks. After a while this can result in collective self-delusion that this pretence is actual work.

But presenteeism has more serious consequences. It is perhaps most common in Japan, where people attend the office even when they are in discomfort. In doing so, they are doing neither themselves nor their employers any favours. As well as reducing productivity, this can increase medical expenses for the employer. According to a study in the Journal of Occupation and Environmental Medicine, these costs can be six times higher for employers than the costs of absenteeism among workers. Those workers were more likely to experience greater pain and to suffer from depression.

In the evolution of humanity, presenteeism is a recent phenomenon. In the industrial era, workers were paid not for their output but for their time, and were required to clock in and out. But modern machinery like smartphones and laptops is portable. Turning an office into a prison, with prisoners allowed home for the evenings, does nothing for the creativity that is increasingly demanded of office workers as routine tasks are automated. To be productive you need presence of mind, not being present in the flesh.

(1)What can we learn from Paragraph2and Paragraph 3?

A. Employees often have to work extra hours.

B. Extra effort improves employees' productivity.

C. "996" model is well received around the world.

D. Both bosses and employees are devoted to their jobs.

(2)What does the underlined "This" in Paragraph 4 refer to?

A. Hoping to get a pay rise.

B. Going home after the boss.

C. Putting in maximum effort.

D. Judging employees' performance.

(3)Which of the following is one the results of long-time presenteeism?

A. Reducing medical costs of employees.

B. Making employees more hard-working.

C. Increasing the competition among employees.

D. Worsening employees' physical and mental condition.

(4)What does the author want to tell us in the last paragraph?

A. Employees should be treated as prisoners.

B. Productivity can't be measured by presenteeism now.

C. Office tasks usually can't be carried out automatically.

D. Office workers should be allowed to be absent-minded.

【答案】(1)A

(2)C

(3)D

(4)B

As the clock ticks past 5 pm, there may be no purpose in staying at your desk. But you can see your boss hard at work and, more importantly, they can see you. So you make an effort to look busy."

Staff may feel that they will not get a pay rise, or a promotion, if they are not seen to be putting inmaximum effort. This is easily confused with long hours. Managers, who are often no good at judging employees' performance, use time in the office as a measure."(员工可能会觉得,如果他们没有尽最大努力工作,就不会得到加薪或升职。 因此this指的是"putting in maximum effort"。

In the evolution of humanity, presenteeism is a recent phenomenon. To be productive you need presence of mind being present in the flesh.

In China, chain restaurants especially the big multinational ones are cool. Going to Starbucks, for example, is a status symbol. It not only says, "I'm rich enough to buy this overpriced coffee, "but also, "I'm cosmopolitan (见多识广的) enough to be part of globalization."

Where I come from in the UK, however, chains are neither fashionable nor gourmet (美食的).

Chains are where you go on New Year's Day when nowhere else is open, or when you are 5 years old and your parents can't stand hearing, "I'm hungry!" any longer. In my own case (with regards to McDonald's), a chain is where you are taken on your first "date". Even at the age of 13, I knew to give the guy the "let's just be friends" phone call the next day.

In the UK, independent cafes and restaurants are making a comeback on the fashion scene. Nowadays, a Londoner who says "let's meet for a coffee at Monmouth" (an independent café) is much cooler than one who says "let's go to Starbucks". Even if Monmouth's coffee is a little more expensive, there's a satisfaction in knowing your pounds aren't going straight to the big corporations.

Of course, there are chain stores all over the UK; you can't go five minutes without spotting a Costa Coffee. But numbers do not add up to good taste.

I do, however, have a confession (坦白). After moving to China I had moments when all the rice and Kung Pao Chicken became too much. I, too, have retreated to McDonald's.

(1)Many Chinese people like to go to multinational chain restaurants because ________.

A. the restaurants give customers a taste of foreign culture

B. the restaurants offer different food and drinks from other restaurants

C. they believe that eating there will show their wealth and social status

D. these restaurants are perfect places for a romantic date

(2)Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. The author has grown tired of Chinese food.

B. Branches of Monmouth's cafe can be found all over the UK.

C. Most independent stores are closed on New Year's Day in the UK.

D. It is cool in the UK to take your first date to a chain restaurant.

(3)We can infer from the article that ________.

A. the author doesn't like food from Pizza Hut

B. the author doesn't like to follow fashion trends

C. many Britons think that numbers mean poor quality

D. many Britons don't like big corporations

【答案】(1)C

(2)C

(3)D

It not only says, "I'm rich enough to buy this overpriced coffee," but also, "I'm cosmopolitan (见多识广的) enough to be part of globalization."可知,很多中国人喜欢去跨国连锁餐饮店是因为在那里就餐能够显示出他们能够支付得起高昂的餐饮费,还能够显示出他们的见多识广,也就是能够显示出他们的富有和社会地位,故选C。

(2)考查细节理解。根据第二段中的"Chains are where you go on New Year's Day when nowhere else is open"可知,在英国,新年那天你只能去连锁店就餐,因为其他的门店都不

Even if Monmouth's coffee is a little more expensive, there's a satisfaction in knowing your pounds aren't going straight to the big corporations."

It is really noisy. Some people fire them during midnight. People around cannot sleep well. Besides, it brings air pollution (污染) and lots of rubbish. Most people do not clean the rubbish after they set off firecrackers. So I think there is no need to set them off anymore during holidays. Liu Ran, 14, from Shandong: Setting off firecrackers is a tradition during Chinese festivals. They set them off to celebrate or wish a happy new year. 新高考赢在阅读高二英语时文阅读专版(含原文翻译及答案解析) A Josh Gad's Olaf showed insanely hot skills singing "Unmeltable Me" for "Frozen II". But the hilarious (欢闹的) tune never made it into the animated hit: It was cut from the movie after his vocals were recorded and storyboards had been drawn up. The missing: “Unmeltable Me”is revealed now at https://www.360docs.net/doc/b27382699.html,, ahead of the home release of “Frozen II”, which features the deleted scene as an extra. The ditty was the first song written for the sequel. The new song features Gad's Olaf singing style, playing harpsichord (羽管键琴) accompaniment. The instrument was requested by directors for comedic reasons. The harpsichord arrangement made it funny and different. The filmmakers originally wanted “Unmeltable Me”to explain an important story point –why Olaf no longer needed the magical “flurry”cloud Elsa had created at the end of "Frozen" to keep the snowman from melting in warm weather. Creating the flurry effect was so difficult for the animators that the directors decided Elsa would have perfected a permafrost coating for Olaf by the second movie. The scene features Olaf doing just about everything to show off his new permafrost coating, from sticking a lit candle into his head to placing his head in a Sterno-heated buffet tray. Olaf's audience in the scene is a group of dignitaries who have traveled to Arendelle from around the world to meet the powerful Elsa at a state dinner. Elsa and Anna are held up, so Olaf fills time entertaining the assembled guests with the song. Sadly, “Unmeltable Me”was cut before it could be fully animated. Gad’s Olaf still received his big song in “Frozen 2”singing “When IAm Older”happily.“Unmeltable Me' is definitely fun, but that’s show business,”says Lopez, who especially loves how Olaf ends the song on an unusual high note. 1. What can we learn from the song “Unmeltable Me”in the first paragraph? A. The song “Unmeltable Me”was sung by Elsa. B. The song can make this movie into a animated hit. C. The song was created for the movie. D. The song was recorded in the movie at last. 2. What does the underlined word “revealed”in Paragraph 1 probably mean? A. Show. B. Hide. C. Create. D. Delete. 3. What is the purpose of using permafrost coating? A. To entertain the audience. B. To prevent Olaf from melting. C. To make the movie funny. D. To explain show business. 4. What can we know from the passage? A. This movie is directed by Josh Gad. B. Olaf likes his new permafrost coating. C. Josh Gad’s attitude is passive because his song was cut from the movie. D. The scene of the song is not mentioned in the article. B Google’s Search Engine Can Recommend Your Favorite Shows and Movies
