W: Tell me, Peter, what makes Harrods so famous?

M: Well, it’s the biggest department store in the UK. And its food hall and the Egyptian hall are very famous. People come to Harrods just to see them.

W: What is special about the food hall?

M: It sells many different kinds of food. For example, it has 250 kinds of cheese from all over the world and more than 180 kinds of bread. Customers also love all the different kinds of chocolate. They buy a hundred tons every year.

W: That’s amazing! And why is the Egyptian hall so famous?

M: Well, when people see it, they feel they are in another world. It looks like in Egyptian building from 4,000 years ago. And it sells beautiful objects. They are not 4,000 years old, of course.

W: Is it true that Harrods produces its own electricity?

M: Yes, it does.70%, enough for a small town. To light the outside of the building, we use 11,500 light bulbs.

W: Really? Tell me, how many customers do you have on an average day? And how much do they spend?

M: About 30,000 people come on an average day. But during the sales, the number increases to 300,000 customers a day. How much do they spent? Well, on average, customers spend about 1.5 million pounds a day. The record for one day is nine million pounds.

W: Come on. This suspense is killing me.

M: No, really, what have you been doing these past few weeks? The last time I saw you, you were looking for a new job.

W: Well, that’s not exactly true. I was thinking about changing jobs. Luckily, they offered me a new position in the accounting department.

M: A step up in the big business world.

W: I wouldn’t exaggerate, but I am pleased. I had been h oping to get a promotion for a while. So when it finally came through, I was relieved. Actually, that’s why I was looking for a new job. I just didn’t want to work there anymore if they weren’t going to recognize my efforts.

M: Right, sometimes you can do your best and it seems like the others don’t know you exist. I hope the money’s better.

W: I got a reasonable raise, now enough about me. I’m dying to hear your news. M: I am getting married.

W: No, you said you’d never get married.

M: That was then and th is is now. You’ve got to meet Andrea, she’s great!

W: This is all news to me. I didn’t even know you were dating.

What are the two speakers talking about/discussing? What is the conversation mainly about? What is the main topic of the conversation? What’s the purpose of sb.’s calling/doing...?

W: Welcome to Work Place. And in today’s program, we’re looking at the results of two recently published surveys, which both deal with the same topic - happiness at work. John, tell us about the first survey. M: Well, this was done by a human resources consultancy, who interviewed more than 1,000 workers, and established a top ten of the factors, which make people happy at work. The most important factor for the majority of the people interviewed was having friendly, supportive colleagues. In fact, 73% of people interviewed put their relationship with colleagues as the key factor contributing to happiness at work, which is a very high percentage. The second most important factor was having work that is enjoyable. The two least important factors were having one's achievements recognized, and rather surprisingly, earning a competitive salary. W: So, we are not mainly motivated by money? M: Apparently not. W: Any other interesting information in the survey? M: Yes. For example, 25% of the working people interviewed described themselves as 'very happy' at work. However, 20% of employees described themselves as being unhappy. W: That’s quite a lot of unhappy people at work every day. M: It is, isn’t it? And there were several more interesting conclusions revealed by the survey. First of all, small is beautiful: people definitely prefer working for smaller organizations or companies with less than 100 staff. We also find out that, generally speaking, women were happier in their work than men.

Questions 9 to 11 are based on the conversation you have just heard. 9. A) It is eating into its banks. B) It winds its way to the sea. C) It is wide and deep. D) It is quickly rising. The river is wide and deep. What do the speakers say about the river beyond the trees? 10. A) Try to speed up the operation by any means. B) Take the equipment apart before being ferried. C) Reduce the transport cost as much as possible. D) Get the trucks over to the other side of the river.

[A] To go sightseeing. [B] To have meetings. [C] To promote a new champagne. [D] To join in a training program. M:Hi,Ann,welcome back. How‘s your trip to the states?

W:Very busy,[19]I had a lot of meetings. … 19. Why did the woman go to New York? [B] Training consultancy. [C] Corporate management. [D] Information processing. W:What‘s your line of business,Mr. Johnson? M:We are a training consultancy. 25. What is the man‘s line of business? What‘s your line of business(做哪一行),男士回答说We are a
