3.Wall street in Manhattan is the financial heart of the USA.It is also the most important banking center in the world. It is a street of“skyscrapers.”These are those incredible, high buildings, which Americans invented, and built faster and higher than anyone else.Perhaps the two most spectacular skyscrapers in New York are the two towers of the New York World Trade Center. When the sun sets, their 110floors shine like pure gold.

4.Like every big city,New York has its own traffic system.Traffic jams can be terrible. It’s usually quickest to go by subway. The New York subway is easy to use and quite cheap. The subway goes to almost every corner of Manhattan. But it is not safe to take the subway late at night because in some places you could get robbed.New York buses are also easy to use.You see more if you go by bus. There are more than30,000taxis in New York. They are easy to see, because they are bright yellow and carry large TAXI signs.Taxis do not go outside the city. However, they will go to the airports. In addition to the taxi fare, people give the taxi driver a tip of15percent of the fare’s value.

5.Central Park is a beautiful green oasis in the middle of New York’s concrete desert. It is surprisingly big, with lakes and woods,as well as organized recreation areas.New Yorkers love Central Park, and they use it all the time.In the winter, they go ice-skating,and in the summer roller-skating.They play ball, ride horses and have picnics. They go bicycling and boating. There is even a children’s zoo, with wild birds and animals.

6.Along the east side of Central Park runs Fifth Avenue, once called “Millionaire’s Row.”In the19th century, the richest men in America built their magnificent homes here.It is still the most fashionable street in the city, with famous department stores.

7.Broadway is the street where you will find New York’s best-known theaters. But away from the bright lights and elegant clothes of Broadway are many smaller theaters.Their plays are called“off-Broad-way”and are often more unusual than the Broadway shows. As well as many theaters,New York has a famous opera house. This is the Metropolitan, where international stars sing from September until April. Carnegie Hall is the city’s more popular concert hall. But night life in New York offers more than classical music and theater. There are hundreds of nightclubs where people go to eat and dance.

New U.S.Plan for Disease Prevention

Urging Americans to take responsibility for their health,Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson on Tuesday launched a$15million program to try to encourage communities to do more to prevent chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer and diabetes.

The initiative highlights the cost of chronic diseases一the leading causes of death in the United States—and outlines ways that people can prevent them, including better diet and increased exercise.

“In the United States today,7of10deaths and the vast majority of serious illness, disability and health care costs are caused by chronic diseases,”the Health and Human Services Department said in a statement. The causes are often behaviora—smoking, poor eating habits and a lack of exercise.

“I am convinced that preventing disease by promoting better health is a smart policy choice for our future,”Thompson told a conference held to launch the initiatiative.

“Our current health care system is not structured to deal with the escalating costs of treating diseases that are largely preventable through changes in our lifestyle choices.”Thompson said heart disease and strokes will cost the country more than$351billion in2003.

“These leading causes of death for men and women are largely preventable, yet we as a nation are not taking the steps necessary for US to lead healthier, longer lives,”he said.

The$15million is slated to go to communities to promote prevention, pushing for changes as simple as building sidewalks to encourage people to walk more.

Daily exercise such as walking can prevent and even reverse heart disease and diabetes, and prevent cancer and strokes. The money will also go to community organizations, clinics and nutritionists who are being encouraged to work together to educate people at risk of diabetes about what they can do to prevent it and encourage more cancer screening.

The American Cancer Society estimates that half of all cancers can be caught by screening, including Pap tests for cervical cancer, mammograms for breast cancer, colonoscopies, and prostate checks.

If such cancers were all caught by early screening, the group estimates that the survival rate for cancer would rise to95percent.

2.The author mentions all the following as ways of disease prevention EXCEPT

A)better diet.

B)increased exercise.

C)reduction on smoking.

D)higher survival rate for cancer.

3.The article indicates that more money spent on disease prevention will mean ______.

A)greater responsibility of the government

B)much less money needed for disease treatment

C)higher costs of health care

D)more1ifestyle choices for people

4.The$15million program is aimed at______.

A)promoting disease prevention

Germs on Banknotes

People in different countries use different types of1yuan in China, pesos in Mexico, pounds in the United Kingdom, dollars in the United States,Australia and New Zealand. They may use2currencies,but these countries, and probably all countries, still have one thing in common1:Germs on the banknotes.

Scientists have been studying the germs on money for well over2100years.At the turn of the20th3,some researchers began to suspect that germs living on money could spread disease.

Most studies of germy money have looked at the germs on the currency4one country. In a new study,Frank Vriesekoop3and other researchers compared the germ populations found on bills of different5.

Vriesekoop3is a microbiologist at the University of Ballarat in Australia4. He led the study, which compared the germ populations found on money6from10nations. The scientists studied1,280banknotes in total;all came from places where people buy food, like supermarkets street vendors and cafes,7those businesses often rely on cash.

Overall, the Australian dollars hosted the fewest live bacteria----no more than10per square centimeter.Chinese yuan had the most----about100per square centimeter. Most of the germs on money probably would not cause harm.

What we call“paper”money usually isn't made from paper. The U.S.dollar, for example,is printed on fabric that is mostly8.Different countries may use different9to print their money. Some of the currencies studied by Vriesekoop and his10such as the American dollar were made from cotton.Others were made from polymers.

The three11with the lowest numbers of bacteria were all printed on polymers. They included the Australian dollar, the New Zealand dollar and some Mexican pesos.

The other currencies were printed on fabric made12of cotton.Fewer germs lived on the polymer notes. This connection suggests that13have a harder time staying alive on polymer surfaces.Scientists need to do more studies to understand how germs live on money-----and whether or not we need to be concerned.Vnesekoop is now starting a study that will14the amounts of time bacteria can stay alive on different types of bills.

Whatever Vriesekoop finds, the fact remains:Paper money harbors germs We should wash our15after touching it;after all5,you never know where your money's been. Or what's living on it

1.B冒号后面说的是各国使用钱币的名称:“yuan in China, pesos in Mexico, pounds in the United Kingdom, dollars in the United States,Aus往'alia and New Zealand”,所以填人的词必定与这些钱币有关,而且应该是钱币的总括词。

选anniversary(周年),year(年)或decade都不合逻辑。

四个选项中只有gathered(收集)与上下文的意思相匹配。

8.C fabric是“织物”,其制作原料不会是plastic(塑料)或rubber(橡胶)。

所以选择materials(材料、原料)是正确的。

与family(家庭成员),advisor(顾问)或boss(老板)合作研究不是没有可能,但总有些离谱。

11.D本段第二句提供了线索,它列出三种纸币,即the Australian dollar, the New Zealand dollar和some Mexican pesos。

14.A四个选项填入句子后,句子成了:“…compare/connect/conduct/command the amounts of time bacteria can stay alive on different types of bills”,很明显;connect (连接)/conduct(实施)/command(控制)amounts of time是无法成立的。

Play Play is the principal business of childhood, and in recent years research has shown the great importance of play in the development of a human being. From earliest infancy, every child needs opportunity and the right materials for play, and the main tools of play are toys. Their main function is to suggest, encourage and assist play. To succeed in this they must be good toys, which children will play with often, and will come back to again and again. Therefore it is important to choose suitable toys for different stages of a child’s development. In recent years research on infant development has shown that the standard a child is likely to reach, within the range of his inherited abilities, is largely determined in the first three years of his life. So a baby’s ability to profit from the right play materials should not be underestimated. A baby who is encouraged and stimulated, talked to and shown things and played with, has the best chance of growing up successfully. In the next stage, from three to five years old, curiosity knows no bounds. Every type of suitable toy should be made available to the child, for trying out, experimenting and learning, for discovering his own particular ability. Bricks and jigsaws(七巧板)and construction toys; painting, scribbling(涂鸦) and making things; sand and water play; toys for imaginative and pretending play; the first social games for learning to play and get on with others. Bt the third stage of play development-from five to seven or eight years-the child is at school. But for a few more years play is still the best way of learning, at home or at school. It is easier to see which type of toys the chills most enjoys.

Common Questions about Dreams Does everyone dream? Yes. Research shows that we all dream. We have our most vivid dreams during a type of sleep called Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. During REM sleep, the brain is very active. The eyes move quickly back and forth1 under the lids, and the large muscles of the body are relaxed. REM sleep occurs every 90-100 minutes, three to four times a night, and it lasts longer as the night goes on. ___1___ We dream at other times during the night, too, but those dreams are less vivid. Do people remember their dreams? A few people remember their dreams. However, most people forget nearly everything that happened during the night — dreams, thoughts, and the short periods of time when they were awake. ___2___ It seems that the memory of the dream is not totally lost, but for some reason it is very hard to bring it back2. If you want to remember your dream, the best thing to do is to write it down as soon as you wake up. Are dreams in color? Most dreams are in color. However, people may not be aware of it for two reasons :They don’t usually remember the details of their dreams, or they don’t notice the color because it is such a natural part of our lives. ___3___ Do dreams have meaning? Scientists continue to debate this issue.3 ___4___ Some people use dreams to help them learn more about their feelings, thoughts, behavior, motives, and values. Others find that dreams can help them solve problems. It’s also true that artists, writers, and scientists often ge t creative ideas from dreams. How can I learn to understand my dreams? The most important thing to remember is that your dreams are personal. The people, actions, and situations in your dreams reflect your experience, your thoughts, and your feelings. Some dream experts believe that there are certain types of dreams that many people have, even if they come from different cultures or time periods. Usually, however, the same dream will have different meanings for different people. For example, an elephant in a dream may mean one thing to a zookeeper and something very different to a child whose favorite toy is a stuffed elephant. ___5___ Then look for links between your dreams and what is happening in your daily life. If you think hard and you are patient, perhaps the meaning of your dreams will become clearer to you.

Ebola Outbreak 1 You are likely aware that several countries in West Africa are battling an Ebola outbreak. Ebola is a dangerous and often lethal viral infection. Scientists believe that humans contracted the virus by eating the meat of rare animals. It is now believed that bats are the primary carries of the virus. 2 To date, there are only three major countries in West Africa experiencing a major outbreak: Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea. However, other countries such as Nigeria have reported confirmed cases of Ebola within their borders. 3 Unless you recently visited one of the three affected West countries you risk of contracting the virus is virtually zero. Unlike other recent airborne virus outbreaks like SARS, the Ebola virus can only be spread through direct contact with an infected person. Specifically, Ebola is spread through contact with body fluids. Though, the virus is transmittable, only an infected person exhibiting symptoms is communicable. 4 The signs and symptoms of Ebola are non-specific and patients typically exhibit them after a week of contracting the virus. Symptoms may appear as early as two days or as late as three weeks after initial infection. Symptoms include disgust, weakness and stomach pain. More uncommon symptoms include chest pain, bleeding and sore throat. 5 Ebola is devastating because of its ability to attack and replicate in every organ of the body. This causes an overstimulation of the body’s inflammatory response, causing the flu-like symptoms. The virus also causes bleeding and impairs the body's normal clotting mechanism (凝血机制), making bleeding even more severe. Loss of blood volume and decreased organ perfusion (器官灌注)ultimately lead to organ failure and death. 6 The current outbreak is the deadliest viral outbreak in over 35 years. While diseases such as the malaria (疟疾) are far more communicable, Ebola is one of the world’s most fatal viral infections. Ebola's fatality rate exceeds that of SARS. 23. paragraph 2___D____ 24. paragraph 3____A___ 25. paragraph 4___C____ 26. paragraph 5___E____ A. Am I at risk ofcontracting the virus? B. is the currentoutbreak the deadliest? C. How do know ifhave contracted the virus? D. What areas arecurrently affected? E. What exactlydoes Ebola do to the body? F. What caused theEbola outbreak?
