阅读下列短文,从每篇短文后所给各题的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

My life began in the years of the Great Depression, and I was the last in a family of nine living children. Our father, an English migrant who had fought in France during World War I, was struggling to make a living on the edge of a South Australian country town. Worn out with child-bearing and hard work, my mother died when I was six months old. I was adopted by a childless couple to whom a son was born a year later, so I went quickly from being the eldest.

In the beginning, our circumstances were good. My adoptive father was employed as a manager of a local store. However, as the Depression worsened, he lost his job and had difficulty finding another. He was a practical a nd resourceful man. We rented a house on a three-quarter-acre block on which he grew vegetables,

peaches, grapes and a variety of flowers. In the dry climate, with the only water being rain collected in two large iron tanks, it was hard work just to keep the plants alive, let alone flourishing (茂盛的) and productive. However, he succeeded.

We had no car, so the garage was used by him as a workshop, where he turned his hand to making and fixing almost anything. He made me a wooden doll’s cradle (摇篮) which I valued for years. He sanded (用砂纸打磨) down and restored cupboards and other furniture which had been purchased second-hand.

When World War II broke out, he soon died. However, we were busy and healthy and never felt poor. I wonder sometimes if we were not better off than children today, who are bored without their electronic games and mobile phones, spend so much time in front of computer and television screens and live in the ever-present fear of attack or abuse.

51. What can we learn about the author and her family?

A. Her mother died when she was six years old.

D. Her father was a French migrant who had fought in Britain.

52. How did the author’s adoptive father make a living w hen the Depression worsened?

A. He sold second-hand furniture.

B. He made wooden dolls’ cradles in a factory.

C. He grew many vegetables, peaches and grapes.

D. He was employed as the manager of a local store.

53. The author’s adoptive father was very _____.

A. selfish

B. sensitive

C. emotional

D. intelligent

54. The purpose of this passage is to _____.

A. recall the life in childhood

C. describe the life of children today

D. give some advice to the local government

B

Sooner or later, if you did things only for pleasure, you’d be left feeling: “Is this all there is?” If happiness was determined by pleasure, then the people with a large amount of money would be the happiest. However, there are plenty of miserable millionaires who have the houses and possessions (财产), but neither can make them much happier than the people who earn an ordinary wage. Happiness includes pleasure, but is something deeper.

Happiness gives you strength in hard times and frees you to enjoy life fully at every opportunity. However, at all stages of life, a lot of sadness is caused by confusing pleasure with happiness.

The boundaries (界限) between pleasure and happiness got blurred (模糊的) at the beginning of the last century with the rise of consumerism (消费主义), in which people buy things on the basis of desire rather than need.

These days, shopping is the number one leisure activity in the world. Advertising comes at you from all sides to suggest that a watch, car, or new clothes will make you more elegant and cool. Occasionally you buy something, and do get pleasure, but not for very long.

The real problem with advertising is that it urges us to look outside ourselves for the things that make us feel good. Happiness, on the other hand, is nourished (滋养) by noticing what you already have and appreciating it. It’s a mistake to compare the outside of someone else with the inside of you.

To become happy is simple. Just write down, each day, something for which you’re grateful —your health, your family, a beautiful morning, a smile from a stranger, or a hug from a friend. The important thing is that you’re looking at the bright side of life. This way you can escape the desires promoted by advertising and free yourself to focus on your own values.

55. The purpose of the first paragraph is to _____.

A. analyze why millionaires are unhappy

B. explain that happiness and pleasure are two different things

C. show that houses and possessions have nothing to do with happiness

D. compare the lives of millionaires with those of the common people

A. It lets one enjoy life.

B. It gives one strength in hard times.

C. It reminds one of what one doesn’t have.

D. It makes one notice the good things in life.

57. Based on the passage, which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?

A. Beautiful clothes bring happiness.

B. Ads make people overlook their inner hearts.

C. Pleasure brought by shopping doesn’t last long.

D. Consumerism encourages people to buy whatever they want.

58. What’s the main topic of the passage?

A. The bad effects of advertising.

B. Shopping can make people happy.

C. What happiness is and how to get it.

D. How to get rid of the desire for unnecessary things.

C

They used to be content with a toy box full of puzzles and teddy bears. But young children are increasingly becoming addicted to technology, leading to a generation of “iKids” who may struggle to read, write and speak properly.

Dr Aric Sigman, a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, spoke as it was revealed that the first tablet computer (平板电脑) for youngsters — the InnoTab by VTech — will be launched in the UK in August and in America this fall. Targeted at children aged four to nine, it aims to exploit the success of the Apple iPad among a younger market. It comes with a 5in colour touch-screen, a built-in MP3 player and “child-friendly applications”.

Selfridges expects the tablet, priced £79.99, to be the top-selling children’s toy this Christmas, while Tesco predicts that Fijit Friends Interactive Toys — a set of four robots that interact with iPhone applications — will be at the top of wish lists. But Dr Sigman warned that children are already showing signs and symptoms of not spending enough time paying attention to the 3D world ar ound them. He said: “It’s absolutely imperative that children spend as much time as possible interacting with real people, particularly looking at their parents’ faces and picking up facial and voice cues and gaining eye-to-eye contact. If they don’t, they won’t learn to speak and learn how their behaviour affects others.”

Literacy expert Sue Palmer, author of Toxic Childhood, cautioned: “It will make it harder for them to learn to read and write. This is a long, slow process that is fundamentally boring to begin with and involves a lot of physical coordination and rallying (集合) of different parts of the brain. If they are learning from a very early age to get a quick fix, their attention and capacity to focus isn’t going to develop.”

But educational psychologist Kairen Cullen said the InnoTab could be a very good thing to prepare children for increasingly media-rich worlds.

She added that she often sees young children who have a “fascination” with the new technology due to their parents’ use.

Simon Elliott’s four-year-old son Ezra became so interested in his father’s iPad that Mr Elliott installed child-friendly applications, such as a drawing program, and imposed a time limit on his use. Mr Elliott said: “It’s perfect for learning and has really improved his hand-eye coordination.”

LONDON(Reuters)-Britain needs to spend up to one billion pounds a year to protect easily destroyed English wildlife habitats from climate change, intensive(集约) farming and population growth, a government-backed report said on Friday.

It urged the government to transform conservation policy in the next 40 years to avoid a damaging loss of the countryside that supports thousands of important plants, trees and animals.

British ecologist John Lawton, who led the year-long study, said England’s wildlife habitats are too small and isolated to protect many species from increased strains in coming decades.

Creating a stronger, better connected network of well-managed habitats will cost between 600 million pounds and 1.1 billion pounds each year, the report estimated(估计).

Failure to act could lead to the loss of areas rich with diverse species, such as meadows, woods and rivers, the report said. Centuries of human activity have helped to shape these habitats and they will need ongoing management if they are to survive, it said.

The United Nations called on world leaders this week to take bold action to preserve animal and plant species. It says the world is facing the worst losses since the dinosaurs vanished 65 million years ago.

England has at least 55,000 species, including significant levels of bats, bumblebees, wildfowl and mature oak trees.

The pace and scale of environmental change over the last 50 years was worrying and is likely to get worse, the report said.

Future threats include extreme weather, droughts, rising sea levels and the loss of areas like wet grasslands to farming to feed a growing population, the report said.

Its authors made 24 recommendations to create stronger habitats. The measures include better management of habitats, setting up new ecological restoration zones and improved water quality and flood protection.

64. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the cause of the loss of wildlife habitats?

A. Climate change.

B. Decreasing habitats.

C. Intensive farming.

D. Population growth.

65. The underlined word “meadows” in Paragraph 5 probably means.

A. pieces of grassland

B. mountains

C. a species of animals

D. forests

66. What can we infer from the passage?

A. England has at least 55,000 endangered species.

B. England has taken measures to protect its wildlife habitats.

C. Some wet grasslands were lost probably because of extreme weather.

D.Better management of habitats will probably lead to stronger habitats for wildlife.

67. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. Britain must act now to save wildlife habitats.

B. Some British ecologists made a study of wildlife.

C. The experts called on the world leaders to protect wildlife habitats.

D. The British government will transform conservation policies in the next 40 years.

It’s a dream of everyone to get rid of everything and to travel all over the world for a year, or at least long enough to forget the office life.

Acting out that fantasy tends to be reserved for retirees and college graduates, but some people hope to show that anyone can jump out of boring work and go travelling.

“Once you get outside of the restrictions of your day-to-day life, you’ll discover things about yourself,” said Sherry Ott, a New Y orker who quit her middle-management job to travel. She now wants to inspire others to take the leap.

Sherry and two partners started the company Briefcase to Backpack, which offers advice on planning an extended journey, or what they call a career-break.

“What makes it a career-break is that you have to have a career you’re leaving, but you plan to come back, maybe even in the same field,” she said. “It’s not just early retirement.”

Ms Ott and other career-break people recently hosted events in 13 cities, where they answered questions about their experiences. They also solved the issues like the

barriers to taking time off and the expenses.

For many people, a big issue is determining how to pay for the journey, which definitely requires some saving and planning---a year or more ahead. The career-break people estimated that they spent between $1,500 and $ 2,700 a month(a person). But they also suggested ways to keep costs down.

“It’s more expensive if you keep moving around from place to place,” said Michaela Potter, another Briefcase to Backpack founder. She mentioned hotels with public kitchens as a cheaper lodging option because they allow travelers to keep meal expenses in check.

Other people save by becoming volunteers. Ms Potter, who managed to save for several long trips while working for a nonprofit organization.

Working along the way is another option. Ms Ott taught English during an extended stay in Vietnam.

Travelling around the world sounds like a big deal until you actually start. However, everyone should know their limits. Not everyone can or should take a year off.
