On a recent summer morning, Suntali Rai was busy counting sheets as she prepared to lay them on the roof of the house she had started building a month earlier. If it didn’t rain, she planned to finish the roofing in a couple of days.Within a week she should be done with the two-room concrete(混凝土) house. Then her family would finally be able to move out of their wooden home, which has been almost uninhabitable (不适宜居住的) since an earthquake shook the country four years ago.Rai’s house in Raigaun has been standing only unsafely since April 2015.That is when a 7.6-magnitude(震级) earthquake killed about 9,000 people and left more than 785,000 families homeless in one of the world’s poorest nations.

The government set up the National Reconstruction Authority(NRA) to rebuild the homes of all affected residents(居民) by 2020.But progress has been slow,in part due to a lack of materials and skilled labours, with thousands of men leaving the country each week to look for work.

Tired of waiting for someone else to build her a safer home,Rai enrolled(报名参加)in a 50-day training course. When she was done, she joined with four other course graduates to build her family a new house .This time, it is designed to stay intact if another earthquake hits.

Founded in 2015 and due to end in 2020,the Skills for Reconstruction project teaches Nepalis in earthquake-hit areas how to build disaster-resilient houses. The aim is to help ease the country’s labour shortage while also arming participants with experience they can later use to find jobs in construction. In Makawanpur district,a third of trainees have been women. For many of them, learning masonry(石工) has allowed them to break free from traditional roles of farming and caregiving and finally make an income of their own.

Whale researchers believe they have found a new way to measure the amount of s t r e s s f e l t b y whales when they experience serious threats(威胁),such as being hit by a ship, and they say the technique could help protect the huge sea creatures from dying off.American Rosalind Rolland is the lead scientist on the project. She and her team a r e w i t h t h e N e w England Aquarium in Boston.Massachusetts.They measured stress hormones(荷尔蒙) by

s t u d y i n g baleen,a substance(物质) found in the upper part of the mouth of some kinds of whale.She explains that the baleen serves as a record that shows a spike in stress h o r m o n e s w h e n w h a l e s f a c e d a n g e r s s u c h a s a changing climate and ship strikes.Scientists can then read these records,similar to reading the rings on a tree.

Understanding the information is important because whales who often feel stressed a r e l e s s l i k e l y t o be reproductive and more likely to become sick. That combination is not good for the whale population, which is already dangerously low.

The scientists did their work on a whale that had become trapped in fishing e q u i p m e n t,w h i c h s o m e scientists estimate (估计)kills up to 300,000 whales and dolphins annually (每年).It was finally killed

by Inuit hunters who found it trying to drag the fishing equipment. The hunters said t h e w h a l e s e e m e d t o lack energy. When scientists examined the dead whale, they found its mouth showed an increase in stress hormones 20 times greater than normal.

Regina Asmutis-Silvia is a biologist with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation in Massachusetts. She didn’t participate in the research, but she says it is important.“We clearly understand that stress is bad for humans. We also need to understand that stress is bad for other animals, too,”she adds.

28.What does the text mainly tell us?

A.The dangers the whale often faces.

B.A discovery to measure stress on whales.

C.A way to protect the mouth of the whale.

D.The measures to stop sea life being hit.

A.Calm and fierce. B. Unhealthy and unable to reproduce.C.Uneasy and energetic. D.Sizeable and likely to lose appetite.31.Why does the author mention the words by Regina?

A.To move on to another topic.

B.To tell the necessity of studying other animals.

C.To stress the importance of the finding.

D.To show the similarity between humans and animals.

Researchers in Singapore found that eating mushrooms (蘑菇) over twice per week could help prevent memory and language problems later in life.

According to the study, published in The Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, there is a unique antioxidant

(抗氧化物质) present in mushrooms that he lps protect certain brain functions.Researchers observed 663 Chinese adults aged over 60 whose diets and lifestyles were tracked from

2011 to 2017.In the study,the participants were asked how often they ate six different t y p e s o f mushrooms:oyster,shiitake,white button,dried,golden and tinned.The findings showed that eating more than two shares of mushrooms per week somehow lowered the c h a n c e s o f m i l d c o g n i t i v e impairment,(MCI) by 50% against those who ate fewer than one share.MCI is a condition that can make people forgetful,affect their memory and cause p r o b l e m s w i t h language,attention and finding the exact position of objects in spaces.Changes in behavior can be not very noticeable and not serious enough to be known as dementia(痴呆).

Participants who ate more mushrooms were found to perform better in thinking and processing exams and also exhibited a faster processing speed. The advantage was reportedly more apparent in those who ate more than two shares a week or more than

300 grams.

The scientists pointed out, however, that they had yet to build a direct link between the fungi(真菌)

and brain function.

The researchers also acknowledged that since this study mainly relied on

self-reported information on mushroom intake and other dietary factors, further studies may be required.Still, the lead study author Lei Feng is encouraged by their findings. “This relevance is surprising and encouraging,”Lei said.Mushrooms are one of the richest dietary sources of ergothioneine —a substance w h i c h w e h u m a n s can’t make on our own.

32.What aspect of research did researchers mainly in Paragraph 3?

A. Culture of diets. B.Existence of MCI.

C. The benefit of eating mushrooms.

D. The types of mushrooms

33.What can we know about MCl?

A.It can affect memory seriously.

B.It can resu lt in language problems.

C. It can reduce the chance of forgetfulness.

D.It can make people easy to be lost.

34.What is the result if students often eat more mushrooms?

A.They love communicating with others.

B.Their thinking ability is quicker than the majority.

C.Their processing speed will be faster.

D.Their academic performance improves significantly.

35.Where is this passage most likely from?

Since the 1990s,the last true wilderness on Antarctica (南极) is becoming an i n c r e a s i n g l y p o p u l a r destination for adventure-seeking tourists. 36 They could destroy the area’s native bird population.

The researchers believed that the Antarctic creatures were not affected by the d a n g e r d u e t o t h e continent’s extreme weather. 37 she and some colleagues decided to examine samples (样本)from Antarctic birds for evidence of human bacteria. To ensure the waste was not polluted, the scientists had to collect it from the birds themselves. 38 If they missed catching a skua—a gull-like bird at first go,the bird never came close again.

It took the scientists four years,from 2008-2011,to collect fecal(粪便) samples o f666a d u l t b i r d s from 24 local species. 39 The results of their study proved the presence of several t y p e s o f h u m a n bacteria in the bird waste.

“While we should do as much as possible to reduce the chance to pass it 0n,it’s hard to believe that

we will stop tourism and science at these sites,and so it is hard to believe that h u m a n s w o n’t c o n t i n u e t o spread pathogens(病原体),”said Kyle Elliott.

Experts, including Gonzalez-Solis,believe the only way to prevent the mass destruction of the bird,

is to introduce stricter regulations. 40 While the Antarctica Treaty states clearly v i s i t o r s c a r r y t h e i r waste back home to protect the original environment, the regulation is rarely obeyed.Hopefully, officials will take steps to protect the easily hurt birds before it,s too late.

A. Even,we forbid tourism here.

B. Or,at least, obey the ones already in place.

C. Now,a new study states that the visitors may be leaving behind harmful bacteria.

D. However,Marta was not convinced this was true.

E. To be honest,it’s uneasy to make regulations.

F. This was no easy task.

G. However,it was well worth the effort.
