II 阅读(共两节,满分50分)

第一节阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项

A

The news hit the Venice Film Festival unexpectedly: Hayao Miyazaki, the world’s most honored creator of animated(动漫) features, was ending his movie career. Koji Hoshi no, who is the president of Mr. Miyazaki’s production company, made the announcement at the film festival, where Mr. Miyazaki’s latest work, The Wind Rises, was shown. “Miyazaki has decided that The Wind Rises will be his last film, and he will now retire,” said Mr. Hoshino. The language of the announcement is believed to have left the door open for Mr. Miyazaki to work on shorter projects.

Mr. Miyazaki’s latest work has been met with some controversy in Japan and in Republic of Korea. The Wind Rises is a fictional account on the life of JiroHorikoshi, the engineer who designed the Mitsubishi A6M Zero, a fighter plane used in the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Some Japanese conservatives have criticized Mr. Miyazaki for the film’s antiwar attitude, while so me Internet users in Republic of Korea have accused him of romanticizing(使浪漫) the inventor of a plane that became a symbol for the Japanese military during World War II. The controversy, however, doesn’t change the fact that Mr. Miyazaki is one of the most famous figures in animated filmmaking.

The72-year-old has directed 11animated features over 34 years, including the international hits My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle.

In the age of digital animation, Mr. Miyazaki has remained faithful to the hand-drawn technique. His movies, known for their entertaining plots, convincing characters and wonderful animation, won him critical praise as well as public recognition. In 2003, Mr. Miyazaki won an Oscar for best animated feature for Spirited Away, and he was awarded a Golden Lion for lifetime achievement at the Venice Film Festival in 2005.

It’s doubtless a shame if animation lovers will really see no more new works from the legend. May his announced retirement be a brief, dark impulse(冲动). May he go on attracting movie fans for years to come.

26. What can we learn from the second paragraph?

Mark is leaving. Please excuse me if I'm a little pensive today. You probably don't know Mark, but you might be lucky enough to know someone just like him. He's been the heart and soul of the office for a couple of years, performing professional skills. He's never been all that interested in getting credit for the terrific work he does. He just wants to do his job, and to do it superbly well. And now he's moving on to an exciting new professional opportunity. It sounds like it could be the chance of a lifetime, and we're genuinely, sincerely pleased for him. But that doesn't make it any easier to say goodbye to a dear friend and trusted colleague.

Life has a way of throwing these curve balls at us, when we start to get comfortable with a person, a place or a situation. A terrific neighbor moves away. A child in the family graduates. Another child finds new love through marriage.

Our ability to cope with change and disruption determines our peace, happiness and contentment in life. But how do we do that?

A friend of mine, Gibbon, who works for the government, is fond of reminding his colleagues that survivability depends upon adaptability. And there's Chris, the California surf-rat, who once told me that the answer to life's problems can be summed up in four words: "Go with the flow." “It's like surfing,” Chris explained, “You can't organize the ocean. Waves just happen. You ride them where they take you. Sure, you're always hoping for the perfect wave where you can get, but mostly you just take them the way they come.”

I'm not exactly sure, but I think Chris was saying that life is a series of events—both good and bad. No matter how deft your organizational skills, there will always be life-influencing factors over which you have no control. The truly successful person expects the unexpected, and is prepared to make adjustments if the need arises.

We're going to miss Mark, just as you'll miss that neighbor or that graduate. But rather than dwell on the sadness of our parting, we'll focus on our hopes for a brighter future for him, and for us. And then we'll go out and do everything we can to make that future happen.

31. The underlined word “pensive” in Para graph 1 probably means _________.

A. thankful

B. pleased

C. unhappy

D. shameful

32. According to para.1, which of the following sentence is NOT true?

A. Mark is lucky enough to know someone like him and gets promoted.

B. Mark is quite professional about his work and seldom asks for praise.

C. Mark is leaving for an exciting new professional opportunity.

D. Mark is the center in the office because he is skillful at his job.

33. What can we infer from Paragraph 2?

A. Although there are so many incidents in our lives, we should feel happy.

B. Life is full of unexpected changes that surprise people.

C. Life is filled with disappointments that upset people.

D. It’s easy for us to cope with the relationships with people around

34. Both Gibbon and Chris support the idea that people should ________.

A. ignore the problems in life and live happily

B. hope for the best but prepare for the worst

C. stop trying to take control of everything in life

D. follow the trend and accustom themselves to it

35. The author probably does NOT agree that ________.

A. one can take control of everything with skills and determination

B. those who are successful are able to adapt themselves to the changes

C. paying too much attention to the past is not a wise choice

D. people should spare no efforts to struggle for a brighter future

C

Many articles have appeared in recent years, claiming that there are no more heroes in the world. The authors says that the young now refuse to admire anyone and that we are living in a world too well informed, too curious showing us the faults of the public figures wh o could become today’s stars, until we lose faith and start looking for defects in any person who seems worthy of respect.

Is it true that we know too much? Were our ancestors lucky to be only partly informed? Those who read the first biographies of George Washington, Joan of Arc, or other great men and women of the past were not told that their hero had bad breath or disliked his mother; they only found a description of his great accomplishments and their admiration was strengthened. In fact, early biogra phers didn’t hesitate to make up an admirable story or two about their hero. The man who wrote the first biography of Washington, for instance, invented the cherry tree; he admitted later that there was no truth in it, but he said that it would give young men a good example to follow. His readers didn’t seem to object; the book was reprinted eighty times—a great success in those days.

Modern biographers do not invent such stories; they respect the facts, as indeed they should. But we pay a price for their truthfulness, for in their efforts to show “the whole person,” they tell us more than we really need to know about private lives, family secrets, and human weakness. The true greatness of a fine man is often forgotten in the display; and people lose not only their admiration for him, but their willingness to trust any other “star” completely.

It may be difficult to be a hero in the world these days, under the searching eyes of the society. But surely excellence has not disappeared completely; there are still individuals who are superior to their fellow men by their wisdom, their courage, or their character. They can be heroes if people are willing to ignore their human imperfection and to admit the respect that their admirable qualities inspire. Heroes are ne eded everywhere, at any time. It’s a sad sky that has no shining stars.

36. Why do the young now refuse to admire anyone?

A. Because there are fewer heroes than before.

B. Because they themselves are more self-centered.

C. Because they have lost faith in today’s life style.

D. Because they rush to find faults with any person.

37. Early biographers of great people ________.

A. knew little about their heroes

B. were willing to invent stories

C. were disliked by readers

D. hid some achievements of their heroes

38. Which of the following statements about modern biographers is true?

A. They show no respect to facts.

D. We benefit from their truthfulness.

A. the standard of being a hero has been raised

B. the author is optimistic about the hero issue

C. our society is lacking in real heroes

D. our society shows enough tolerance

40. What is essential in solving the problem mentioned in the passage?

A. People’s attitude.

Google Glass, a wearable computer, will not go on sale for many months. But the resistance is already under way. The glasses-like device, which allows users to access the Internet, take photos and shoot videos, has been banned by a bar in Seattle, because according to the bar’ owner, the bar was "kind of a private place." Besides, large parts of Las Vegas will not welcome wearers.

Google Glass is a pair of glasses with a tiny computer attached to the right earpiece and has the ability to capture any chance encounter and broadcast it to millions. As personal technology becomes increasingly invisible, it is causing questions of whether it will rob people of privacy.

As Google sees it, Glass is a revolutionary new way to quickly and effortlessly connect people with information. Google stresses that Glass is a work in its early stage, with test versions now being released to 2,000 developers. The company hopes they'll be seen as normal and become accepted in the same way smart phones are. The wearer has to speak or touch the device to activate(激活) it, and must look directly at someone to take a photograph or video of them. "We are thinking very carefully about how we design Glass because new technology always raises new issues," said Courtney Hohne, a Google spokeswoman.

Critics view Glass as an unfriendly new technology that could rob people of what few privacy they have left. They think Google is downplaying the privacy and

security risks. According to Google, it's obvious when someone is taking pictures or recording a video on Glass. Developers, however, are pushing the limits. One created a small sensation in tech circles with a program that eliminated the need for gestures or voice commands. To snap a picture, all the user needed to do was wink(眨眼).

Imagine a surveillance(监控) device that you could wear on your body all day without anyone being the wiser. Out on the street, in the subway, at a bar or cafe, people would never know whether the stranger next to them is secretly recording their every move. It is really a privacy disaster.

41. What can we know from the first paragraph?

A. Google Glass sells well in the market.

B. Google Glass is not welcomed by customers.

C. Google Glass can not be used in private places.

D. Google Glass has heard some sort of disapproval.

42. According to Google Company, which of the following statements about Google Glass is NOT true?

A. Google Glass is an immature product.

B. They are acting cautiously in designing Google Glass.

C. People can take photos without eyeing the objects.

D. Google Glass is just as normal as a smart phone.

43. The underlined part “pushing the limits” in Paragraph 4 refers to _______.

A. speeding up the production time of Google Glass

B. improving the functions of Google Glass

C. objecting to what Google has said

D. experimenting with something risky

44. In the last paragraph, the author wants to tell us that _______.

A. Google glass is not worth buying

B. people are constantly monitored

C. people can become wiser with Google Glass

D. Google G lass is threatening people’s privacy

45. Which of the followings is the best title of this passage?

A. The Disadvantages of Google Glass.

B. A New Way to Gain More Information.

C. Privacy Concerns of Google Glass.

D. A Revolutionary Technology.

World Reading Day was set up by the UNESCO in 1995 to encourage people, especially teenagers, to discover the pleasure of reading.

Many countries celebrated World Reading Day. Take the UK as an example, on that day, millions of schoolchildren can buy books of special price, a much lower price than usual, in any bookstore. It has been done every year since 1998. World Reading Day 2010 in the UK will take place on Thursday 4th March. Please note that this date applies to the UK and Ireland only. The initiative is so well established in schools there that they want to make sure that the Day happens in term time to really make the most of this opportunity to celebrate books and reading. Most other countries hold World Reading Day on 23rd April every year.

World Reading Day is also celebrated in China. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, an avid reader, does lots of reading every day though he is very busy. On World Reading Day 2009 he encouraged citizens to do more reading. Wen suggested that young people should spend more time reading. “Books cannot change the world, but people can change the world by changing themselves through reading.”

Reading can benefit people in many ways. Reading helps us to follow the latest developments of science and technology. Reading gives us information about other cultures and places of the world. Reading is also one of the most important ways to learn a foreign language like English.

“Reading makes a full man” (Bacon, 1597). Books, magazines, newspapers and other kinds of reading materials can help us to know more about the outside world and perfect us. Therefore, it is necessary for us to spend time on reading every day.

Last week in our class meeting, we had a heated discussion about how to develop our own emotional quotient. As far as we can understand, EQ ranges from knowing and managing our own emotions, motivating ourselves, understanding others’emotions to dealing with the relationship between people. Those who have a high EQ usually possess such features as having excellent interpersonal skills, being outgoing, pleasant and sympathetic as well as handling problems devotedly. To develop a better EQ, we ought to form good habits like keeping calm and optimistic. Furthermore, not only are we supposed to take an active part in various activities but also we should think twice before taking action.

第二节读写任务(共1小题,满分25分)

As we know, knowledge may be acquired through many ways, the best of which is reading. In the age of high technology, reading deserves to be paid attention to. To begin with, it is the most flexible way of getting information. Many people think it not only helps them better understand society as well as nature, but also broadens their horizon. Additionally, reading, to some degree, is of great benefit to interpersonal communication apart from self-improvement. It can also enrich our life and bring people pleasure. What’s more, reading is also regarded by many as a means of better survival.

Books are to mind what food is to body. However, not every book is worthy of being read. Some may mislead readers. So keep in mind that choosing a good book is like making a good friend. Besides, reading is supposed to be done in a proper period of time, for example, in our spare time, thus not disturbing our work or study. As long as we insist on reading, we can get improved gradually.

Personally, I appreciate reading classical literature in my spare time, which provides me with a thorough understanding of life and society. Through practicing reading between the lines and beyond the lines, I find my comprehension ability stably improved. Perhaps in the near future, I’m not merely a reader but also a writer.
