III.Reading Comprehension (30分)

Passage One: Choose the best one from the following A/B/C/D

It is a cold March evening on a farm in South England. Outside, 2000 sheep are standing in the fields. Most of them will give birth to lambs in the following weeks. Inside, their shepherds are sitting in the warm watching TV.

You might think that the shepherds are neglecting their duty by resting in comfort. However, if you look at the television more closely, you would see that the shepherds are protecting the sheep.

It is part of an experiment to try to increase the survival rate of new lambs. In the past, the shepherds stayed out with their sheep, walking round and helping the mother sheep to give birth. In this experiment, television cameras are used to scan the sheep, and the shepherds are looking at a television monitor which is automatically controlled.

The system has several advantages. Shepherds do not have to walk among the sheep, which tends to disturb the mother sheep that are about to give birth. Instead, they can stay inside, watching by remote control. If there is no problem, they stay away from the sheep. But when they are needed they can quickly go out to help, or to scare away foxes. The experiment is popular with shepherds because it means that they do not have to spend all their time outdoors waiting for the lambs to arrive in freezing weather.

The monitoring system is rented for the few months when the lambs are born. The cost is high, but the farm manager estimates that, since lambs are so valuable, and if about ten more lambs are saved than in a usual ear, the experiment will be financially worthwhile. At the same time, the experiment may show that it is possible to make a saving in manpower, especially when

a large number of sheep are involved.

21. The main purpose of using a television monitor to watch the sheep is _________.

A. to kill more animals such as foxes

B. to increase the survival rate of lambs

C. to reduce the number of shepherds required on a farm

D. to improve the working condition for the shepherds

22. By using the television monitor, shepherds can ________.

A. protect the sheep

B. enjoy TV programs

C. stay out warm

D. neglect their duty

23. From the passage, we learn that walking among the sheep ________.

A. is more popular with shepherds than watching TV inside

B. can help the mother sheep to give birth to more lambs

C. is the best way to protect the sheep

D. usually disturbs the mother sheep that will give birth

24. The shepherds like to use the remote control system because ________.

A. their sheep will not be attacked by wild animals

B. they would like to watch TV 24 hours a day

C. they can greatly improve their working condition

D. they can work less time with the help of the system

25. The passage is mainly about _______.

A. the improvement of television cameras

B. the life of shepherds on a farm

C. the use of monitor system for shepherds

D. the decrease of the survival rate of lambs

Passage Two: Decide whether each of the following statements is True or False according to the text.

I remember I was in America. For most people, the holiday season is a time of joy and family reunion. For me, it is a time of mixed emotions – for I have been away from my family and friends in Iran while studying in the United States. Rather than lock myself in my loneliness, I have tried each Christmas to learn a little more about the culture of the country and know more about my American friends.

A tie-clasp (领带夹) I still wear reminds me repeatedly of the Christmas of 1989, which was quite memorable. All my classmates had eagerly looked forward to the holiday time. I had no vacation because I was short of money. My check from home had not arrived on schedule because of the crush (积压) of holiday mail.

One day I walked to the campus to pick up my mail at the International Students Office. But the all important check still had not arrived. Maria, a Mexican-American student, who worked as temporary secretary in the department when others left for their holidays must have seen me as I left the mailbox with disappointment showing on my face. She invited me to spend Christmas Eve with her family. I accepted all too gladly.

Maria’s family was not rich. They lived in a modest small house. Maria introduced me to her parents, her aunt and her sister, who welcomed me warmly. Maria’s father could only speak Spanish, so he talked to me while Maria’s sister acted as an interpreter. The kind look in his eyes and his relaxed behavior made me feel right at home.

The dinner was very elaborate (精致的) Each dish had a special feature, sauce and a blend of seasonings (调味品). Maria’s aunt ate while standing at a corner of the small, old table. I felt a little uncomfortable, knowing that I was occupying her place, but her gesture expressed the sincere hospitality with which Maria’s whole family received me. After dinner, Maria chose a small package from under the Christmas tree and handed it to me. Inside I found the tie-clasp I still use to this day.

Looking at the tie-clasp, I know I would always regard it as a memento of an unforgettable evening of friendship during a hard and lonely period of my life.

26. The author of the passage was an overseas student in America. ( ).

27. Unlike most other people, the author had a miserable Christmas. ( )

28. The author tried his best not to be overwhelmed (打垮) by his loneliness. ( )

29. The Christmas of 1989was an unforgettable event for the author. ( )

30. The author didn’t look forward to the holiday since he didn’t have much money to enjoy it. ( )

31. His check was probably delayed because of the crush of holiday mail. ( )

32. Maria was a secretary at the university when the author studied there. ( )

33. There was only enough room for five seats at the table in Maria’s home. ( )

34. Maria’s father did not talk because he couldn’t speak English. ( )

35. The author appreciated the tie-clasp because it conveyed the kindness of Maria’s family.

综合英语3试卷解析

综合英语3期末试卷 得分_________ Part Ⅰ Reading Comprehension Passage A Since Insight exposed the U.S. Postal Service’s program “Under the Eagle’s Eye”, the eyes of many privacy advocates have focused like a laser on the agency. “Warning! The post office c ould report YOU as a drug dealer or terrorist,” reads a press release from the Libertarian Party. Until the Postal Service drops its orders to postal clerks to report certain legal financial transactions as “suspicious activity”, the Libertarian Party and others are urging consumers to purchase money orders, wire transfers and cash cards elsewhere. But now Insight has learned that it’s not just purchases of these financial instruments that the post office reports as suspicious. In a training video obtained by Insight, after a jewelry store owner hands a postal clerk $50,000 cash to put on his postage meter, the clerk is told to report this as suspicious transaction. Even though it may be perfectly legal, using this much cash is “strange”, the video says. “If putting a lot of money on your postage meter is a sign of criminal activity, I’m afraid we’re going to have to have a little talk with our own office manager,” says George Getz, spokesman for the Libertarian Party, which uses a postage meter to send mass mailings. “It seems unbelievable. Do you launder money 32 cents at a time? That’s crazy.” According to the Postal Service, even transactions of a few thousand dollars in cash should arouse suspicion. But privacy advocates say it is normal, for instance, for restaurant or store owners who want to send out promotional mailings to go to the post office and put the cash receipts for that day on their postage meters. “Under the Eagle’s Eye” does not apply to purchases of stamps and “philatelic” it ems. But why, then, does the program apply to postage on meters, which is merely “electronic stamps”, asks Rick Merritt, director of Postal Watch. 1) Insight is most probably ________.
