第三部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)

第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A.

You have probably read the books. You have probably seen the movies. But have you heard the music? The latest Harry Potter news is that bands form to play what is called “wizard rock” or sometimes just “wrock”.

The new kind of music began when Joe De George and his brother Paul decided that the characters from Harry Potter would make a great band. Ron on guitar, Hermione on bass, Hagrid on drums and Harry singing up front would make for an excellent group. In one day, the brothers wrote, rehearsed and performed six songs about life at Hogwarts. After the first performance, Paul decided that “we are Harry and the potters.”

Wiz ard rock is pretty much what it sounds like: rock “n” rock inspired by and set in the world of Harry Potter. The De George started a trend. Today there are dozens of wizard-rock bands: the Whomping Willows, the Remus Lupins and the Moaning Myrtles to name a few. Rockers dress like Hogwarts students and play at conventions and festivals.

People who like Harry Potter think wizard rock music is totally awesome. The songs can be funny, but the music is not a joke. Just ask the De George brothers. They’ve playe d more than 500 shows in 49 states and their hit songs are inspired by characters from Harry Potter: “Save Ginny Weasley” and “Voldemort Can’t Stop the Rock!” The themes of their music are the same as those of Rowling’s books: love and friendship, upset an d struggle.

Wizard rock is just one more by-product in the Harry Potter craze. Two years after J.K. Rowling published her last book in the series, Potter popularity continues to grow. There are Potter conventions and Potter clubs that try to get kids and grow-ups to help fight hunger, for example. And the fact that they may do it while humming “Wizard Chess” or “Platform 9” makes those meetings fun.

56. What is the text mainly about?

A. Harry Potter.

B. Harry Potter’s music.

C. Wizard rock.

D. Joe and Paul’s band.

57. The underlined word “awesome” in Pa4 probably means ______ in the text .

A. amusing

B. serious

C. considerate

D. inviting

58. Which of the following is true about wizard rock?

A. It’s no different from rock “n” rock.

B. It’s sung in the films Harry Potter.

C. It’s a funny business.

D. It follows the themes in Rowling’s books.

59. According to the last paragraph, we can learn that _______ .

A. Harry Potter has had great effects in many aspects

B. Harry Potter is very popular in the world

C. Wizard rock is Harry Potter’s only by-product

D. Potter’s clubs have helped the hungry

B.

A federal judge sentenced Bruce Jones to 12 years in federal prison for fraud (诈骗罪). Over a 10-year period, Jones had managed to cheat thousands of people throughout the state out of almost $10 million.

He advertised his fantastic ideas on TV. "For some reason," Jones said, "TV seems to break the ice. Even though you are a total stranger to the viewer, once he sees you on TV in his home, he feels like he knows you. You enter his living room and become a trusted friend."

Jones had an imagination that wouldn't quit. One time he showed viewers an "official government" earthquake report which "proved" that the western half of California would collapse into the sea within three years. For $100, he said, Jones would insure your house and property for full value. Thousands of people who saw that TV ad sent him a hundred dollars each.

In another TV ad, Jones claimed that he had come to an agreement with the federal and state government for exclusive(独享的)air rights. He told viewers that, for only $100, they could own the first 10 miles above all their property. You would be able to charge any commercial plane that flew over your property $100 per crossing. You would also be able to charge government rockets, satellites, space shuttles, and space stations $100 for each and every violation of your air rights.

Another time, Jones claimed to have invented a product that gets rid of calories. He showed the viewers a spray can of "NoCal." He said that by simply spraying NoCal on your food, a chemical interaction would cause all the calories in the food to simply disappear within about 10 seconds. The NoCal was only $10 a can. As usual, Jones received thousands of checks in the mail.

The judge told Jones that he should be ashamed of himself. Jones responded that he was very ashamed of himself, and that when he got out of prison he hoped to become a TV adviser to help people avoid getting cheated. He told the judge that he was already developing an instructional CD that, for merely $100, would save people thousands of dollars in scams(骗局). The judge nodded, and then changed Jones' sentence from 10 years to 12 years.

60.According to Jones, he could successfully cheat many people mainly because .

B.they were too eager to make money

C.they believed too much in TV ads

D.he was skillful in communicating with people

61.Which of the following statements is TRUE?

62.We can infer that people who wanted to buy "NoCal" from Jones .

A.were mainly from low income families

B.all had a rich knowledge of chemistry

C.were probably interested in losing weight

D.usually did the shopping through the Internet

B.he could hardly believe what Jones had told him

C.Jones had cheated more people than he expected

D.he had suffered from Jones' scams himself

A report, published in last week’s Journal of the American Medical Association, offers a picture of how risky it is to get a lift from a teenage driver. Indeed, a l6-year-old driver with three or more passengers is three times as likely to have a fatal (致命) accident as a teenager driving alone. By contrast, the risk of death for drivers between 30 and 59 decreases with each additional passenger.

The author also found that the death rates for teenage drivers increased dramatically after 10 p. m., and especially after midnight. With passengers in the car, the driver was even more likely to die in a late-night accident.

Robert Foss, a scientist at the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center, says the higher death rates for teenage drivers have less to do with “really stupid behavior” than with just a lack of driving experience. “The basic thing,” he says, “is t hat adults who are responsible for issuing (发放) licenses fail to recognize how skilled a task driving is.”

Both he and the author of the study believe that the way to reduce the harm is to have so-called graduated licensing systems,in which getting a license is a slower process. A graduated license requires that a teenager first prove himself capable of driving in the presence of an adult, followed by a period of driving at night with a limited number of passengers before graduating to get a full driving license.

Graduated licensing systems have reduced teenage driver crashes, according to recent studies. About half of the states now have some sort of graduated licensing system in place, but only 10 of those states have number limitation on passengers. California is the strictest, with a new driver prohibited from carrying any passenger under 20 for the first six months.

64.Which of the following situations is most dangerous according to the passage?

A.Adults giving a lift to teenagers on the highway after l0 p.m.

B.A teenager driving after midnight with passengers in the car.

C.Adults driving with three or more teenage passengers late at night.

D.A teenager getting a lift from a stranger on the highway at midnight.

65.According to Robert Foss, the high death rate of teenage drivers is mainly due to ________.

A.their frequent driving at night

B.their lack of driving experience

C.their improper way of driving

D.their driving with passengers

66.Which of the following statements is true according to Paragraph 3?

A.Teenagers should spend more time learning to drive.

B.Driving is a skill too difficult for teenagers to learn.

C.Teenagers should be limited in taking driving lessons.

D.People issuing license are partly responsible for the accidents.

67.A suggested meas ure to be taken to reduce teenagers’ driving accidents is that ________.

A.driving in the presence of an adult should be made a rule

B.they should be forbidden to take on passengers

C.they should not be allowed to drive after l0 p. m.

D.the licensing systems should be improved

D

Pushy parents and teachers who “hothouse” the under-5s risk causing damage to the children’s long term development, a leading education expert said.

Lilian Katz, Professor of Education at the University of Illinois, said that four-year-olds engaged in reading and writing went on to perform worse academically than those engaged in imaginative learning. They scored higher in tests at the age of 5, but children whose first year at school was stimulating outstripped them four years later.

The findings suggest that the government's structured approach to early years' learning could be storing up problems for children. They also raise serious questions about the plan for all children to be able to read by the age of 6.

In many countries formal teaching does not start until children are 6 or 7 and have improved their social and manual skills. Children start learning to read and write at 6 in the United States, France and Germany, and at 7 in Finland and Sweden.

Professor Katz said that in many schools the courses were "boring children to tears". Much academic teaching required children to learn by memorizing pieces of information out of context, she said. Teaching in reception class should instead allow children to develop their intellect by exploring their environments and asking questions.

"Research suggests the benefits of formal academic instruction for four- and five-year-olds seem to be promising when they are tested early, but considerably less so in the long term. When these children are followed over a period of three or more years, those who had early experience in more intellectually engaging curricula were more likely to do well in school than their peers, who had received early academic instruction." She advocates teaching children through first-hand experience and play, in mixed-aged classes. This can include puppet shows, drawing or running a pretend shop in the classroom.

68.According to the passage, those who “hothouse” the under-5s would probably _________.

A. prefer a lot of interaction and stimulation while teaching

B. teach in a lively way to motivate kids’ interest

C. push the kids to memorize pieces of information

D. care about the kids’ physical development

69.What does the underlined word “ outstripped” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A. did better than

B. looked down upon

C. caught up with

D. performed worse than

70.Which of the following is NOT the opinion of Lilian Katz?

A. Children should be taught through first-hand experience.

B. Learning in a mixed-age class is good for children.

C. Running a shop can help children get good marks.

D. Puppet shows and drawing are useful in teaching children.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。答案填在第Ⅱ卷的相应位置。

People think children should play sports.Sports are fun,and children keep healthy while playing with others.71 It may produce feelings of poor self-respect or aggressive behavior in some children.According to research on kids and sports,40,000,000 kids play sports in the US.Of these,18,000,000 say they have been shouted at or called names while playing sports. This leaves many children with a bad impression of sports. They think sports are just too aggressive. Many researchers believe adults, especially parents and coaches, are the main cause of too much aggression in children’s sports.72 This behavior is then further strengthened through both positive and negative feedback.Parents and coaches are powerful teachers because children usually look up to them.Often these adults behave aggressively themselves, sending children the message that winning is everything. Many parents go to children’s sporting events and shout insults at other players or cheer when their children behave aggressively. As well, children are even taught that hurting other players is acceptable or are pushed to continue playing even when they are injured. In addition, the media make violence seem exciting.73

As a society,we really need to face up to this problem and do something about it.74__ They also need to teach children better values. They should not just cheer when children win or act aggressively. They should teach children to enjoy themselves whether they win or not.75 If adults allow children to play when injured, this gives the message that health is not as important as winning.

A.Parents and coaches in particular should act as better examples for children.

B.However, playing sports can have negative effects on children.

C.We live in a society which wishes to get rid of risk.

D.They believe children copy aggressive adult behavior.
