A

On a hot summer day many years ago, I was on my way to pick up two items at the supermarket.I was then a frequent visitor to it because there never seemed to be enough money for a whole week's food-shopping at once.

My wife, after a tragic battle with cancer, had died just a few months earlier. There was no insurance —just many expenses and a mountain of bills.I held a part-time job, which barely generated enough money to feed my two young children.Things were really bad.And so, with a heavy heart and four dollars in my pocket, I was on my way to the supermarket to purchase a gallon of milk and a loaf of bread. The children were hungry and I had to get them something to eat.As I came to a red traffic light, I noticed on my right a young couple and a child on the grass next to the road. The noonday sun beat down on them without mercy. The man held up a sign which read, "Will Work for Food." The woman stood next to him, staring at the cars stop at the red light. The child sat on the grass holding a one-armed doll.I noticed all this before the light changed to green.

I wanted so desperately to give them a few dollars, but if I did that, there wouldn't be enough left to buy the food for my kids.Four dollars will only go so far.As the light changed, I took one last glance at them and sped off feeling both guilty and sad.As I kept driving, I couldn't get the picture of them out of my mind. The sad, haunting eyes of the young couple stayed with me for about a mile.I could take it no longer.I felt their pain and had to do something about it.I turned around and drove back to where I had last seen them.

I pulled up close to them and handed the man two of my four dollars. There were tears in his eyes as he thanked me.I smiled and drove on to the supermarket.Perhaps both milk and bread would be on sale, I thought. And what if I only got milk alone, or just the bread? Well, it would have to do.

Pottery is the name given to all kinds of pots and other things made from clay and other minerals when they have been hardened by heat in the potter's kiln.Pottery is one of the oldest crafts, which began to be practiced as soon as man learned to control fire, and long before the melting of metals.Pottery enabled man from very early times to make vessels for storing and cooking food, for carrying water, etc.Early vessels were shaped by hand and probably hardened in a big fire.

A great advance in pottery followed the invention of the potter's wheel and the kiln.It is not known where the potter's wheel was first used, but it is believed that by 3500 BC potters in Central Asia were using some kind of wheel. Its use spread west and east to Egypt, China, and then to Ancient Greece and Rome.At first the wheel was nothing more than a small disc, turned round by hand.Later it was improved and could be turned round by the potter with his feet.Such a wheel was probably in use in Egypt by about 200 BC.It was certainly still in use in Europe at the beginning of the nineteenth century.Modern potters' wheels are power driven. There are three major ways pottery items are made. They may be shaped by hand, or the wet clay may be thrown on the potter's wheel and shaped against the spin with the fingers or some tools.Or the wet clay may be put in a pre-shaped "form".After the pots have been shaped, they are slowly baked in the kiln. This produces chemical changes in the clay which have a hardening effect. The time taken for firing pottery varies with the size of the kiln and the type of clay.It can take from 24 hours to 2 weeks.Clay is leaking by nature. If a pottery item is to hold water, it must be "glazed".Glaze consists of the raw materials of glass, ground (研磨)together and mixed with water. The glaze is sprayed on to the pot which is then heated in the kiln again until it is covered with a very thin layer of glass. This seals the tiny holes in the clay.

The new studies show that fewer than half of the 9th graders in many of the nation's largest cities, can ever graduate. The studies clearly show that the dropout rate isn't dropping. And, in particular, the dropout rate isn't dropping for poor and minority students.Amazingly, though so many regret me rising dropout rate, our schools continue to lack formal plans—or any plans—to teach students motivation. Most schools have no game plan to ensure that students understand that schooling will be completely necessary.Schools expect youth and children to act as though schooling is important, but they never teach them to believe that.Years ago, families ensured that the offspring recognized the value of schooling. But in many modern families, the children may

fail to recognize the importance of school life just because these families may actually tell their children that school is not important.Since many families are not motivating their children to be interested students, youth professionals, like teachers may need to provide this training.Otherwise, it is likely the dropout rate will continue not to drop, but only worsen. Here are some strategies to convince even the most apathetic (无动于衷的)students that they must stay in school.

Ask students if they will ever need to work: The world has changed 100 years ago, factory work was the booming job, and it required no education.Today, factories are increasingly automated. Most computer-related jobs require education and at least a high school diploma.

Ask students which century they will be prepared for. In 1900, the most common jobs were farm laborer and domestic servant—education not needed. Now, the most common jobs are office and sales staff—education and diploma usually needed. An amazing 6 out of 10 people today work in a store or office.

Ask students to devise a way that the employee could be replaced. For example, the coming trend in fast food is to use computers rather than people to run the restaurant.A prototype (case)is apparently already being tested. The students should discover that most jobs that lack education and diploma requirements may be ripe for automation.

50.What does the underlined part mean in Paragraph 1 ?

A.Few students can afford to go to school in large cities.

B.A large number of the 9th graders can graduate now.

C.There are still quite a few 9th graders leaving school early.

D.Most schools in large cities have fewer and fewer students.

51.Without the help of youth professionals, ____.

A.more and more families will gradually recognize the value of school

B.it is likely that the dropout rate in schools won't continue to drop

C.some parents will be more convinced of their children's future

D.the schools will make proper plans to solve the problems with dropout

52.The author takes factory work for example mainly to ____.

A.tell us that many jobs required certain education in the past

B.show that there are more factory work and employment in modem society

C.show that employment in the computer field grows at a high rate

D.emphasize modem jobs require education and that schools are necessary

53.It can be inferred from the passage that___.

A.both schools and families should answer for the high dropout rate

B.many new jobs don't need children's high school diploma

C.working in a Store doesn't require a high school diploma

D.most schools are ready to help students recognize the importance of study

54.If students play the "Replace Me" game, the result will be "___".

A.They will know that they can "always" do without a diploma

B.More of them will drop out early to go to work

C.They will discover that lack of education is a disadvantage in choosing jobs

D.They will become better at using computers to hunt for a job

D

Today, there's hardly an aspect of our life that isn't being upside down by the tons of information available on the hundreds of millions of sites crowding the Internet, not to mention its ability to keep us in constant touch with each other via electronic mail."If the automobile and aerospace technology had exploded at the same pace as computer and information technology," says Microsoft, "a new car would cost about $ 2 and go 600 miles on a small quantity of gas.And you could buy a Boeing 747 for the cost of a pizza."

Probably the biggest payoff, however, is the billions of dollars the Internet is saving companies in producing goods and serving the needs of their customers.Nothing like it has been seen since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, when power-driven machines began producing more in a day than men could turn out in nearly a year."We view the growth of the Internet and e-commerce as a global trend," says Merrill Lynch, "along the lines of printing press, the telephone, the computer, and electricity."

You would be hard pressed to name something that isn't available on the Internet.Consider: books, health-care, movie tickets, construction materials, baby clothes, stocks, cattle feed, music electronics, antiques, tools, real estate, toys, autographs of famous

people, wine and airline tickets. And even after you've moved on to your final resting place, there's no reason those you love can't keep in touch.A company called FinalThoughts.com offers a place for you to store "afterlife e-mails" you can send to Heaven with the help of a "guardian angel".

Kids today are so computer literate that it in fact ensures the United States will remain the unchallenged leader in cyberspace (网络空间)for the predictable future.Nearly all children in families with incomes of more than $75,000 a year have home computers, according to a study by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.Youngsters from ages 2 to 17 at all income levels have computers, with 52% of those connected to the Internet. Most kids use computers to play games (some for 30 hours or more a week), and many teenage girls think nothing of rushing home from school to have e-mail chats with friends they have just left. What's clear is that, whether we like it or not, the Internet is an ever growing part of our lives and there is no turning back."The Internet is just 20% invented," says cyber pioneer Jake Winebaum."The last 80% is happening now."

55.What can we learn from the Microsoft's remark?

A.Today's cars and airplanes are extremely overpriced.

B.Information technology is developing at an amazing speed.

C.Information technology has reached the point where improvement is difficult.

D.There's more competition in information technology industry than in car industry.

56.According to the author, the biggest benefit of the Internet is that _____.

A.it saves companies huge amounts of money

B.it speeds up profit making

C.it brings people incredible convenience

D.it saves customers a lot of time

57.The author gives the example of FinalThoughts.com to make the point that ____.

A.there are some genius ideas on the Internet

B.almost anything is available on the Internet

C.people can find good bargains on the Internet

D.some websites provide novel services to increase hits

58.What can we learn from the fourth paragraph?

A.There is a link between income and computer ownership.

B.Many American children don't put computers to good use.

C.Studies show that boys are more computer literate than girls.

D.The U.S.will stay ahead in the information technology in years.

59.Which sentence has the phrase that possesses the same meaning as the one underlined in the fourth paragraph?

A.Some believe that he has benefited their lives a lot, while others think nothing of him.

B.Think nothing of it.It was my pleasure.

C.He thinks nothing of staying up all night in the Cafe bar.

D.Then think nothing of it.I know you didn't mean it

60.What is the message the author intends to convey?

A.The Internet is going to get firm hold of our lives some day.

B.The Internet is going to influence our lives even more greatly.

C.We should have a positive attitude towards the changes the Internet brings.

D.Children should be well prepared for the challenges in the information age.

A.A sense of humor is not an inborn ability.

B.A sense of humor can be developed in our life.

C.A sense of humor helps us from several aspects.

D.A sense of humor means more than telling jokes.

E.A sense of humor can be expressed in many ways.

F.A sense of humor helps people to better enjoy life.

61.___ As awareness of the benefits of humor increases, most of us want to get all the laughs we can.It seems that almost every day there is another new discovery about the power of humor to help us physically, mentally,, emotionally, and spiritually.Every

system of the body responds to laughter in some important or positive way.

62.___ Many people mistakenly believe that we are born with a sense of humor. They think that when it comes to a sense of humor, "either you've got it or you don't." This is false. What is true, however, is that the ability to laugh and smile is actually something we are born with. For example, we laugh when we are tickled under the arm, even without thinking about how to react.63.___ The parts of me brain and central nervous system that control laughing and smiling are mature at birth in human infants, but that is not the same thing as having a sense of humor.(After all, when a baby laughs in his small bed we don't rush over and say, "That kid has a great sense of humor.")Your sense of humor is something you can develop over a lifetime.Don't be nervous before others and try to laugh at yourself—then you will make them laugh too.

64.___ Humor includes a lot more than laughing and joke telling. Many people worry needlessly that they do not have a good sense of humor because they are not good joke tellers.More than jokes, a sense of humor requires being willing and able to see the funny side of life's situations as they happen. In fact, one of the best definitions of a sense of humor is "the ability to see the non-serious element in a situation".

65.___ There may be a thousand different ways to express your sense of humor, but joke telling is only one of those ways.As more is discovered about how humor benefits our life, more people will be able to see and enjoy the humor when they are in a difficult situation.Life depends on air, food and water, but it is made easier to live with a good sense of humor.

Text 2 M: Excuse me, where can I find the manager in this building? I need to speak to him right now. W: Sorry, I can’t help you. I’m not familiar with this building. My friend lives here. Text 3 M: Did you have a nice weekend? The weather was lovely. W: Yes, we did. I went for a walk in a park near our home, and my husband and the children went boating on the lake. Text 4 M: How can I get to National City Bank? W: Walk down Elm Street as far as the traffic lights, turn left onto Poplar Street, walk to the end onto Oak Street, the bank is on your left. Text 5 M: Hi, Lisa. Shirley and I are going for a drink after work at the usual place. Would you like to come along? W: My car is in the repair shop and I have to pick it up. You go ahead and I’ll meet you there. Text 6 M: Oh, I’m starving. W: Me too. Shall we eat out? There’s a new French restaurant down the street. M: Oh, forget about it. I went there with a friend last week. The menu was all in French and I just couldn’t read it. W: That’s what you’re painful. M: Maybe. But I should say everything was expensive and nothing was to my satisfaction. W: Then how about the Italian restaurant on the next block? M: Well, I ate it almost every day last week. Let’s just eat in today. W: But I’m not in the mood to cook. M: I’ll cook then. In fact I’m sick and tired of restaurant. I just want a home-cooked meal. Text 7 W: Tony, can I ask you a personal question? M: About what? W: Well, I was wondering about how you are received here in China? M: What do you mean? W: Well, since you’re Chinese Canadian, and only speak English and French well, how do native Chinese treat you? M: Oh, well, sometimes it can get pretty difficult, when people find out that I’m a Canadian citizen who can’t speak Chinese well, they usually call me a banana. You know yellow on the outside and white on the inside. W: How does that make you feel? M: Well, I first feel mad, then I feel sad, for I’m seen as someone who has forgotten his roots. All this is because my parents left to find a better life. And I decided to return in order to find something I lost. Sometimes I’m not sure if I like what I’ve found. Text 8
