On a hot summer day many years ago, I was on my way to pick up two items at the supermarket．I was then a frequent visitor to it because there never seemed to be enough money for a whole week's food-shopping at once．

I wanted so desperately to give them a few dollars, but if I did that, there wouldn't be enough left to buy the food for my kids．Four dollars will only go so far．As the light changed, I took one last glance at them and sped off feeling both guilty and sad．As I kept driving, I couldn't get the picture of them out of my mind．The sad, haunting eyes of the young couple stayed with me for about a mile．I could take it no longer．I felt their pain and had to do something about it．I turned around and drove back to where I had last seen them．

I pulled up close to them and handed the man two of my four dollars．There were tears in his eyes as he thanked me．I smiled and drove on to the supermarket．Perhaps both milk and bread would be on sale, I thought．And what if I only got milk alone, or just the bread? Well, it would have to do．

Pottery is the name given to all kinds of pots and other things made from clay and other minerals when they have been hardened by heat in the potter's kiln．Pottery is one of the oldest crafts, which began to be practiced as soon as man learned to control fire, and long before the melting of metals．Pottery enabled man from very early times to make vessels for storing and cooking food, for carrying water, etc．Early vessels were shaped by hand and probably hardened in a big fire．

A great advance in pottery followed the invention of the potter's wheel and the kiln．It is not known where the potter's wheel was first used, but it is believed that by 3500 BC potters in Central Asia were using some kind of wheel．Its use spread west and east to Egypt, China, and then to Ancient Greece and Rome．At first the wheel was nothing more than a small disc, turned round by hand．Later it was improved and could be turned round by the potter with his feet．Such a wheel was probably in use in Egypt by about 200 BC．It was certainly still in use in Europe at the beginning of the nineteenth century．Modern potters' wheels are power driven．There are three major ways pottery items are made．They may be shaped by hand, or the wet clay may be thrown on the potter's wheel and shaped against the spin with the fingers or some tools．Or the wet clay may be put in a pre-shaped "form"．After the pots have been shaped, they are slowly baked in the kiln．This produces chemical changes in the clay which have a hardening effect．The time taken for firing pottery varies with the size of the kiln and the type of clay．It can take from 24 hours to 2 weeks．Clay is leaking by nature．If a pottery item is to hold water, it must be "glazed"．Glaze consists of the raw materials of glass, ground （研磨）together and mixed with water．The glaze is sprayed on to the pot which is then heated in the kiln again until it is covered with a very thin layer of glass．This seals the tiny holes in the clay．

The new studies show that fewer than half of the 9th graders in many of the nation's largest cities, can ever graduate．The studies clearly show that the dropout rate isn't dropping．And, in particular, the dropout rate isn't dropping for poor and minority students．Amazingly, though so many regret me rising dropout rate, our schools continue to lack formal plans—or any plans—to teach students motivation．Most schools have no game plan to ensure that students understand that schooling will be completely necessary．Schools expect youth and children to act as though schooling is important, but they never teach them to believe that．Years ago, families ensured that the offspring recognized the value of schooling．But in many modern families, the children may

fail to recognize the importance of school life just because these families may actually tell their children that school is not important．Since many families are not motivating their children to be interested students, youth professionals, like teachers may need to provide this training．Otherwise, it is likely the dropout rate will continue not to drop, but only worsen．Here are some strategies to convince even the most apathetic （无动于衷的）students that they must stay in school．

Ask students if they will ever need to work: The world has changed 100 years ago, factory work was the booming job, and it required no education．Today, factories are increasingly automated．Most computer-related jobs require education and at least a high school diploma．

Ask students which century they will be prepared for. In 1900, the most common jobs were farm laborer and domestic servant—education not needed．Now, the most common jobs are office and sales staff—education and diploma usually needed．An amazing 6 out of 10 people today work in a store or office．
