阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

How many times do you have to fail at something in order to succeed? Did you know that Thomas Edison failed 10,000 times while trying to invent the light bulb? He certainly had a “learn and do” attitude! He was able to turn each failed experiment into a successful way to invent the light bulb. So what can we learn from this? You can adopt the “fail forward” strategy too.

In reality, none of us are failures. It?s true that we will experience times of defeat, problems, and disasters, but remember, each one of us is meant to succeed in life. However, we must choose our fate. Henry David Thoreau said, “Men are born to succeed, not to fail.”

We can never be forced into having a happy and successful life. Whether or not you experience success or failure is completely controlled by what you think and do. You are the only one who can choose the thoughts that will keep you from achieving the abundant life and joy that you are meant to have. No matter how difficult t hings may seem, say to yourself, “I choose to be a happy and successful person.”

Why do some people get what they want and others fail? I believe that getting what you desire in life takes planning, and it doesn?t just happen by luck. So how do we plan for success?

It has been proven that successful people do things more differently than unsuccessful people. They recognize the patterns of success and follow them; one of those patterns is planning. They plan what they think and do, which sets them apart. They know exactly what they desire, have an intelligent plan for getting it, and then work their plan. They know what success will cost them in terms of time, energy, and results, and they devote the right resources toward making their plans happen.

Would the world be more peaceful if women were in charge? A challenging new book by the Harvard University psychologist Steven Pinker says that the answer is “yes”.

In The Better Angels of Our Nature, Pinker presents data showing that human violence, while still very much with us today, has been gradually declining. Moreover, he says, “over the long sweep of history, women have been and will be a peaceful force. Traditional war is a man?s game: tribal women neve r band together to attack neighboring villages.” As mothers, women tend to maintain peaceful conditions in which to bring up their children.

Skeptics(怀疑者)immediately reply that women have not made war simply because they have rarely been in power. If they were empowered as leaders, the disorder of the world would force them to make the same warlike decisions that men do. Margaret Thatcher,Golda Meir, and Indira Gandhi were powerful women; all of them led their countries to war.

But it is also true that these women rose to leadership by playing according to the political rules of “a man?s world.” It was their success consistent with male values that enabled their rise to leadership in the first place. In a world in which women were in the majority of leadership positions, they might behave differently in power.

So we are left with the broader question: does gender(性别)really matter in leadership? In terms of traditional opinion, various psychological studies show that men tend towards the hard power of command, while women are cooperative and naturally understand the soft power of attraction and persuasion.

The key choices about war and peace in our future will depend not on gender, but on how leaders combine hard and soft power skills to produce smart policies. Both men and women will make those decisions.

61.Which of the following does Pinker agree?

A.Human violence has been increasing.

B.Men play a vital role in traditional war.

C.Women have not made war due to their powerlessness.

D.Women prefer to take care of their babies at home.

A.they were all women

B.they also acted as leaders

C.they were all heroes

D.they also made war

63.How did these women rise to leadership?

A.By entering a famous university.

B.By following values similar to men?s.

C.By showing their good character.

D.By playing political games.

64.In terms of traditional opinion, .

A.men prefer cooperation

B.men are wiser than women

C.women know well about soft power

D.women are excellent leaders.

65.What does the writer intend to tell us?

A.War and peace depend on wise policies made by men or women.

B.We had better choose women as our leaders if we want peace.

C.Women are more likely to make smart policies than men.

D.Me tend to lead their countries to war.

Anger at the practice of demanding dowries(嫁妆), which can lead to violence against brides(新娘), has prompted a takeoff of “Angry Birds” called “Angry Brides” that aims to highlight the illegal practice still prevalent(流行的,普遍的)in many South Asian countries.

Dowries-such as jewelry, clothes, cars and money-are traditionally given by the bride?s family to the groom(新郎)and his parents to ensure she is taken care of in her new home.

The custom was outlawed more than five decades ago. But it is still widely practiced, with the groom?s family demanding even more money after marriage, leading to mental and physical annoyance that can drive the woman to suicide.

Each groom has a price tag, starting at 1.5 million rupees($29,165). Every time the player hits a groom, his value decreases and money is added to the player?s Anti-Dowry Fund ,which is saved posted on their Facebook page.

“Since we launched the game last week, more than 270,000 people have liked the app. Both men and women seem to be playing it”, said Bhamidi.

Given Australia?s size and the fact that early settlements were far apart, Australian society is remarkably homogeneous (同种的). Its citizens are fundamentally prosperous and the way of life in the major cities and towns is much the same however many miles divide them. It takes a sharp ear to identify regional accents. However, there is some difference in lifestyle between city dwellers and the country people. Almost 90 per cent of the population lives in the fast-paced cities along the coast and has little more than a passing familiarity with the desert. The major cities preserve pockets of colonial heritage, but the overall impression is modern, with new buildings reflecting the country?s youth. In contrast, the rural communities tend to be slow-moving and conservative. For many years, Australia was said to have “ridden on the sheep?s back”, a reference to wool being the country?s main money earner. However, the wool industry is no longer dominant. Much of Australia?s relatively sound economy is now achieved from natural coal and wheat, and by being the largest diamond producer in the world. Newer industries such as tourism and wine making are also increasingly important. Australians are generally friendly and relaxed, with a self-deprecating sense of humor. On the whole, Australia is a society without hierarchies (等级制度), an attitude generally held to stem from its prisoner beginnings.

Yet, contrary to widespread belief, very few Australians have true prisoner origins. Within only one generation of the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, Australia had become a nation of immigrants. Originally coming almost entirely from the British Isles, today one in three Australians comes from elsewhere. Australia?s liberal post war immigration policies led to an influx of survivors from war-torn Europe, most notably Greeks, Italians, Poles and Germans.

The emphasis has shifted in recent years and today the majority of new immigrants are from Southeast Asia. Today Australia is a …blend of nations? and although some racism exists, it has generally been a successful experiment and the country is justifiably proud to have one of the most harmonious multicultural communities in the world.

71.What does the writer mean by saying “It take s a sharp ear to identify regional accents.” in the first paragraph?

A. Australians speak Standard English with no local accents whatsoever.

B. You have to practice a lot to learn to understand the different accents.

C. The Australian regional accents are very difficult to understand indeed.

D. There is not much difference between the accents in different areas of Australia.

72.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? Most Australians have ancestors who were prisoners.

The Australian economy is dependent on sheep exports.

The majority of people living in Australia come from Europe.

The pace of life is different in the city and in the country.

73.The underlined pronoun …it? in the final paragraph refers to “_______”. Community B. racism C. blend of Nations D. Southeast Asia 74.We can infer from the passage that _____.

A. there are no s igns of Australia?s colonial past in its modern cities

B. Australia?s rece nt immigration policy encourages immigrants from Southeast Asia

C. immigrants from Southeast Asia have brought racial problems

D. “riding on sheep?s back” resulted in slow development in rural communities

75.This passage mainly focuses on Australia?s ______.

A. society

B. economy

C. racial problems

D. history
