One morning, a blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sigh which said, “I am blind, please help me.”

There were only a few coins in the hat. A man was walking by. He took out a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words on it. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by could see the new words.

About 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted around the world each year. At the same time, there are people who haven’t enough to eat.

Many people don’t know that food waste begins on farms. For many reasons, farmers have to

throw away lots of food. One of the biggest reasons is market standards (标准). In rich countries, food markets will only sell the highest quality (质量) food. All the produce has to be the same color and the similar size. Sometimes a vegetable will be too big or too small. This food is fine to eat, but many food markets will not sell this kind of produce. But the Fraser Valley Gleaners Society( FVG) believes this food does not need to be wasted. This Canadian organization’s goal is to collect extra(额外的) farm produce and make food for hungry people around the world.

Every year farms in Canada’s Fraser Valley give the FVG over 900 tons of vegetables. So what does the FVG do with all this food? It makes dried soup. The dried soup makes a healthy meal that can travel in boxes all around the world. In 2013, the FVG sent more than 13 million meals in more than 40 different countries.

One person who uses dried soup is Oscar Palencia. Palencia is from Guatemala. In Guatemala, 50% of children don’t have enough to eat. Palencia started to feed children living in hunger.
