“You’re too small, Ginny. You’ll never make an Olympic team,” said my first-ever rowing (划船)coach, way back in the late winter of 1978. I had just told him my dream, which was admittedly outsized at that point, to somebody whose opinion not only mattered, but whose emotional (情感的) support could play a key role.
Then I was just 20, and still a beginner athlete. Maybe my dream wasn’t based on reality (现实). After all, I had tried out for the national team for the first time the previous year and been cut.
I lacked (缺乏) the height that most Olympic rowers possess, not to mention much experience as an athlete, and I suffered from asthma (哮喘病), but still, I was shocked by my coach’s response.
Crushed (击垮) not just by his choice of words, but by his certainty, I left the gym in a panic (惊慌). As I walked, I began to rethink my future, making room for my coach’s opinion, pushing my dream aside into a dark corner. A small inner voice had joined forces with the co ach’s, “Maybe he’s right.”
But then, another voice argued: “What does he know? Why does he get to decide?”Just because my own coach didn’t have faith (信任) in me didn’t mean I had to give up on myself so quickly. By the time I arrived back at my apartment, I was mad at my coach and my dream was back on centre stage.
Nothing came easy when it came to fulfilling that dream. I tried out for two more national teams and two different coaches cut me. But I was driven by my love of the beauty of rowing. I wanted to row among the best and I refused to stop until I achieved my goal. I made that 1980 team, despite not getting to compete at the Olympics. I kept training for four more years, and finally won silver at the 1984 Olympics.
All the effort was worth the wait. All those hours on the water, in the weight room, and in the stadium got me here. If I’m not going to support my dreams, no one else will. And I will not allow anyone else to decide for me what’s possible.

When 4-year-old British Prince George started his first day of school in September 2017, Chinese language was on his curriculum. And he wasn’t alone. According to a report published by the British Council in September, about 51 percent of UK parents want their children to learn Chinese, as it is believed to be one of the most useful languages to know.
In fact, the popularity of Chinese drove the UK government to launch (开展) the Mandarin Excellence Programme in September 2016. Its aim (目标) is to make at least 5,000 British state secondary school students fluent in Chinese by 2020.
Yet, the UK isn’t the only country showing a growing interest in Chinese. The language has become the second most spoken foreign language in the United States, after only Spanish. Besides, an increasing number of countries and regions have included Chinese in their national curriculum so far.
So why are so many countries crazy about learning Chinese? One reason could be that as China continues to develop rapidly, Chinese is becoming a useful tool for people’s personal and professional (职业的)growth. Aisling McCaffrey from Canada, who studied at the Renmin
University of China, told Xinhua News Agency, “… learning Chinese is the best way to make sure that you can be part of that growth.”
This opinion was shared by former prime minister of the UK David Cameron, who urged (竭力主张) British students to learn Chinese to “seal (订立)tomorrow’s business deals”. And he quoted from former South African president Nelson Mandela, “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. I f you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.”

Typhoons bring strong winds, heavy rain, and flooding. Most of the time, when people stay indoors, they’re all right. This is what the people in the Philippines used to believe until they met the “Super T yphoon”, Haiya n.
The typhoon hit the country on 8th November 2013 at around 5 a.m., when most people were still asleep. But being at home didn’t keep them safe, and few buildings remained standing once they were hit by wind as violent as 376 kilometres per hour.
Where did Haiyan get its terrible power from? According to Brian McNoldy, a weather
expert, Haiyan was so strong because “it had everything working for it”. “All typhoons get energy from the warm ocean waters,” said Colin Price, a weather researcher. Storms in warm places are like giant motors, powered by the heat flowing (流动) from the ocean waters to the air above. However, because of climate change, the oceans have been warming up in recent decades (数十年). “Warmer oceans will result in more strong storms,” Price said. Also, Haiyan started near the equator (赤道), where it was able to pick up more heat before heading to the Philippines. Moreover, the way it travelled was mostly along open ocean, which means no land stopped it from gathering strength. In addition, there happened to be very little “wind shear (切力)”, a sudden change in wind speed or direction, which can split (分开) developing storms. This is like when you stir a glass of water with a chopstick: a flowing circle will form, but if you move the chopstick in the opposite direction, the circle will quickly disappear.
