Mr.Walker was born in Opotiki and grew up there until he was 13.Two years ago, when he returned to New Zealand,he spent 9 months living on the streets after getting kicked out of shelters for homeless people twice owing to his drinking problems.

Actually he began drinking heavily 3 years ago and only wanted to party and have fun.“At the time I didn’t really mind it,but when I look back at it now,it’s pretty sad,”he said.He had a pretty long criminal record and had done two short terms in prison for crimes he described as minor disorderly behaviors and playing up in public.

While at his lowest, sitting on some steps in Whakatane,Mr.Walker met another homeless man he formed a strong connection with, who turned out to be the father he had never met.His father applied to Housing New Zealand and was given a home.Mr.Walker,his father and brothers moved in together and things started to improve for the family.

About three weeks ago,Mr.Walker was admitted into a glazing(玻璃装配业)company in Christchurch run by George Kururangi.

It is no secret that millions of people around the world struggle with weight loss. But what if getting rid of unwanted pounds was as simple as distracting(分心)yourself?

Now a lot of scientists pay attention to this field and a growing body of research shows that learning to distract yourself may help reduce your food desires.

In the short run it might also help keep crazy overeating in check. In one study researchers had fifty five overweight patients do distraction tasks to control their food desires. There were three movements designed by the researchers, including tapping the forehead and ear with an index finger, tapping a toe on the floor,or simply staring at a wall.Among them the finger tapping seemed to help the most, compared with the others.

In another study scientists looked at the brain activity of overweight participants as they viewed images of desirable food such as pizza and ice cream. The researchers then observed how mental distraction techniques affected their brain activity. The techniques included thinking about things other than food, accepting the food thoughts and recognizing that they are just thoughts and don’t need to be acted upon, thinking about the long-term consequences of overeating, and focusing on the immediate reward of eating the food. The study found that thinking about bad long-term consequences was the best technique for controlling the urge to eat.The technique also caused brain activity in regions related to inhibitory(抑制性)contro1.

Researchers don’t yet understand how thinking about food in particu lar ways helps control eating desires, and they are not advocating distraction techniques as a silver bullet for weight loss. But the studies stress the central role of the brain in wishing for food, and how techniques to distract the brain may be part of weight loss puzzle.

29.Which works the best in controlling food desires according to the first study? A.Tapping the forehead and ear.

B.Tapping a toe on the floor.

C.Staring at a wall.

D.Staring at others’activities.

30.What is the most effective way to distract people from the food according to the second study? A.Focusing on the immediate reward of eating it.

B.Thinking about the bad results of overeating.

C.Accepting the food thoughts but not eating it.

D.Thinking about other things instead of the food.

31.What does the underlined phrase“a silver bullet”in the last paragraph probably mean? A.A valuable research.

B.An effective solution.

Beijing’s Forbidden City, once home to royal families of the Ming and Qing dynasties,is a place full of wonder. From its thousands of rooms to its many beautiful artifacts(工艺品),no wonder it’s one of China’s most popular tourist destinations now.But even more than 600 years after it was built,it’s still managing to serve up surprises.

Since it was built during the Ming Dynasty,it’s estimated that the Forbidden City has survived more than 200 earthquakes. And while most structures aren’t made to survive natural disasters, let alone ones built hundreds of years ago,it seems that the Forbidden City was built to stand anything.

A recent television documentary(纪录片)by UK broadcaster Channel 4 explored the skills of the ancient building’s designers.A group of Chinese carpenters and engineers were shown building a model of one of the Forbidden City’s palaces,at one fifth of the size.

To show how strong ancient Chinese architecture really is,the model was put to the test.It was subjected to a simulated(模拟的)earthquake of 9.5 on the Richter scale(里氏震级)—the largest ever recorded quake—and survived.Instead of falling apart, the model was just moved gently during the test.

According to experts, the answer to the Forbidden City’s strength,as well as other ancient Chinese structures’,lies in brackets or dougong—a centuries-old building method invented in China.

Despite being held together without any nails or glue, the brackets are perfect at keeping structures together when the weather gets rough.

“Dougong design is an important earthquake-resistant feature of classical Chinese structures because the framework changes in shape when under pressure, much like the shock absorbers(减震器)of a car.”according to Chinese National Geography.“Ancient Chinese craftsmen created

structures that were both strong and pleasing to the eye, showing their advanced understanding of mathematics, architecture, materials, and structural science.”

The Forbidden City draws visitors because of its rich history and cultural significance, but perhaps it should add one more thing to its list of attractions:earthquake shelter.33.What happened to the model during the test?

A.It fell apart.

B.It was destroyed.

C.It moved slightly.

D.It remained unchanged.

34.What made the Forbidden City resist earthquake?

A.The shock absorbers.

B.Special building materials.

C.Beautiful artifacts.

D.Dougong design.

35.What can be inferred from the text?

A.Dougong design was thought highly of by the author,

B.The Forbidden City will serve as an earthquake shelter soon.

C.Dougong design can date back to the Ming Dynasty.

D.The Forbidden City has been a tourist destination since it was built.

Nothing is more important to academic achievement than being a good reader. But not all the students can do it well. Here are some approaches to improving your reading.

36 If you are interested in what you are reading about, the words will come alive, and you will be motivated to understand. You will feel a sense of satisfaction in accomplishing a task that you enjoy.

Let your imagination get involved.Good readers get absorbed in their reading and let it set off their imagination.Learn to enjoy your reading without asking too many questions or analyzing too much, which will just ruin the enjoyment of the reading experience. 39 Just enjoy and look

forward to absorbing the information, ideas and thoughts expressed by the writer.Recognize that the key is to read a lot.You may develop a system for keeping track of new words that you meet in your reading. However, the main growth in your vocabulary and reading skill will come just from reading as much as you can. 40 Keep reading, and you will become a better reader.

A.Read about things that interest you.

B.You do not need to predict or analyze.

It includes airfare ($225), hotel ($170), dining out ($116) and dressing up ($95) and the gift. If you have weddings to attend this year, here are some tips for you to avoid breaking the bank. 1. Book flights in advance The moment you decide to attend a wedding is the time to check flight prices at the best time. Plane fares are higher in the summer, especially in July and August. Booking in advance will save you money, as will watch for sales on lower-cost carriers like JetBlue and Frontier. Don't blow your budget on the gift If you've got the money, an expensive gift is lovely. But there's no need to take out loans to prove your love for the happy couple. Skip an expensive necklace by giving (an appropriate amount of) cash instead. To save on the gift, consider making one: A photo album or scrapbook of memories with the bride and groom shows how much you care. You could also share the gift with other guest(s) or even make gifts with DIY ideas by yourself to save money. 3. Use old dresses and suits You don't always have to be on a new dress for a wedding.
