□1104班Good morning, everyone! Today I’d like to talk about my lesson with you. First of all, I’ll begin with the analysis of my teaching material. The lesson named Festivals Around the World is selected from New Senior English for China Students’ Book3. It’s the first unit of the book3. From the title we can know, this unit tells about general information of various festivals around the world about their types, origins, celebrations, significance and so on. There are a lot of festivals mentioned in this unit, so it’s difficult for students to remember all the detail information. So I’ll try to reorganize the information by reading activities and make my students know the structure of text clearly.

My targeted students are first year students in high school. They are longing for new knowledge about words and grammar. Besides these, I’ll pay more attention to evaluating their ability of listening, speaking, especially reading and writing. As high students, they need to develop a good habit of critical thinking. Taking all these factors into consideration, I divide my teaching aims into three aspects:

First is knowledge aim. Get the students to learn useful new words and expressions, especially those in bold in the text. I’ll guide students to memorize them with the context to master the use of words and

expression and design some exercises to practice. On the other hand, I’ll introduce some background information to help them understand the foreign festivals better. Hopefully, they can organize the key words from the text and their own expression to introduce the festivals we learn in the text to others.

Second is ability aim. Help students improve the reading ability. I'll project different aim-oriented activities to guide them to finish predicting, scanning, skimming and summarizing. With the teacher's help, students will have a panoramic view of the whole text and can put the methods into other material's reading.

Third is emotional aim. The text ends up with a brief conclusion of the significance of festivals, which gives me the hint that I need to enable the students to know the significance of festivals both from the text and their own life experience. Because festivals are one of the most important parts of different culture. I will get students to have a worldwide horizon and have a proper attitude towards different culture. And more importantly, enable them to value our own Chinese traditional culture.

In order to achieve my aims successfully,I project seven steps.

Step1 is lead-in. I'll play a short video about Spring Festival in China. At the same time, I'll use my own words to describe it and ask them to guess name of the Festival. This will arise students' interest and call back their memory of the celebration of festivals.

Step2 is word-study. Students are asked to read the new words and expressions after me.At the same time, I'll put some pictures related to the meaning next to the words. This will give them the stimulation both on hearing and sight to help them remember.

Step3 is skimming.I'll give students two minutes to go over the text and find out four different types of festivals. In this way, students will clearly know the structure of the whole text. And they will establish the self-confidence in learning the new lesson with the initial easy task.

Step4 is scanning. This time, I'll ask students to have a careful reading of paragraph 2 to 5 one by one. For paragraph 2 about festivals of the Deads, they need to finish a table with the key words describing the information about when, where and what to do. For paragraph about Festivals to Honor People, students are asked to match the related information. For paragraph 4 about Harvest Festivals, students need to answer the question: why we call Harvest Festival a happy event and I’ll ask students to conclude the different ways of celebrations in China, Japan and European countries with me using some pictures to give a clue. For paragraph five about Spring Festivals, I’ll show some pictures to introduce Easter, Carnivals and Cherry Blossom Festival and ask students to pick out the key words in the text to describe them. Through these activities, students will get fully involved in the class. They learn how to find and organize the main information both quickly and accurately

without feeling bored. The clear representation of the main information also helps students learn the text better.

Step 5 is discussion. I’ll ask students among all the festivals which one is their favorite. Usually, some students may choose Chinese traditional festivals while others may like foreign festivals. Then I’ll give them a situation. Imaging we are at the end of the year, which festival would they like to choose to welcome the new year, Spring Festival in China or Christmas? And why? After students giving their answer , I’ll conclude that every festival has its value and we should respect it and hold a proper attitude towards it. But as Chinese students, we need to get know more our own traditional festivals and protect our culture. The discussion has no definite answer. It aims at making students practice expressing their ideas in English and open their minds to think about different values of different culture. Thus, they will hold a proper attitude towards foreign festivals and Chinese traditional culture.

Step6 is sublimation. I’ll ask students the question I put forwards in the beginning: what’s the significance of festivals. I’ll guide students to my sublimation prepared before. Festival is important to us because it can help us relax ourselves, have fun with our families and friends, it can also help us remember our ancestors and great people in history. No matter how we celebrate our festivals, we should stay with our families and friends and enjoy our life. This will help students to go over the last

paragraph in the text and help me to reach the emotional aims in this lesson.

Step7 is homework. Ask students to write a composition about their favorite festival within 120 words. This will help students review what they have learned in this class and make a summary about their discussion before. Of course, it will help them practice their writing skill.
