Nov 7 is lidong, one of the 24 solar terms, marking the beginning of winter. Descriptions of winter are normally quite downbeat (悲观的) for obvious reasons. Winter means strong winds and snow – an environment in which it is uncomfortable to be.

This unpleasant and even frightening aspect of winter is evident in literature. In Shakespeare’s King Lear (1606), the king has given away his kingdom and been rejected by two ungrateful daughters. He is out in the winter cold, suffering things that are usually reserved for the poorest and most wretched (不幸的) human beings.

The winter is bad enough for Lear, but being abandoned by his family is worse. A song from another Shakespeare play, As You Like It (1599), is fitting for this poor o ld man’s situation: “Blow, blow, thou winter wind, / Thou art not so unkind / As man’s ingratitude (忘恩负义)”. Here, winter is used to bring out the ugliness of inhumanity. There aren’t many things that are worse than winter, according to Shakespeare.

Once winter became less of a threat to human beings, literary works featuring it became more positive. Since Charles Dickens, the representation of the season in literature has often featured happy Christmas celebrations.

The cold and bleak (萧瑟的) mood of the winter weather provides a contrast to the fun and feasting (盛宴) going on indoors.

Dickens’ A Christmas Carol (1843) was the start of this, but Christmas is still a common, cheery element in stories that feature winter scenes today. Consider the joy felt by Harry Potter and his friends in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (1997) as they sit down for their festive meal:

“Harry had never in all his life had such a Christmas dinner. A hundred fat, roast turkeys; mountains of roast and boiled potatoes; platters of chipolatas (一盘盘的小香肠); tureens of buttered peas (一碗碗拌了黄油的豌豆), silver boats of thick, rich gravy (肉卤) and cranberry sauce (蔓越莓酱)”.

It is almost as much a pleasure to read about the meal as it might have been to eat it.u

Although wi nter still isn’t the most cheerful season in novels and poems, it’s safe to say that writers have certainly “warmed up” since Shakespeare’s days.

Sydni Bennett didn’t want to be like anyone else when she was a little girl. Her friends would often compare her to Misty Copeland, a famous American ballet (芭蕾舞) dancer. She didn’t want to hear that. Instead, she would live by the words, “Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.”

The 16-year-old, who is now a coach at a dance studio (工作室), has the confidence of a wise woman.

Bennett recently made history as the first African-American to be crowned (加冕) Miss Illinois Teen USA, 34 years after it first started.

“I wasn’t expecting it. My reaction video isn’t that good because I didn’t know what to do.” After receiving her shining crown, another black contestant (选手) ran up to be the first to hug and congratulate Bennett. The exchange was an act of pure sisterhood.

“There were very few black girls competing,” said Bennett. “We were all close friends and talked about how it had to be the year for one o f us to take it.”

The excitement about the historic crowning didn’t stop there.

“If you don’t see someone who looks like you in any event, you may think, ‘I don’t belong.’ But Bennett had all the confidence in the world to go and compete,” said Randy Dun can, chair of the dance department at the Chicago Academy for the Arts.

Before the pageant (选美比赛), Bennett wasn’t aware that a black girl had never won. Yet, she remained confident in her pursuit.

“It made me want to win for all the black girls around [the world],” she said. “I didn’t feel less about my ability to win; it put a drive in me rather than a doubt.”

Bennett said her life experiences have been preparing her for the big day all along.

“I think many girls feel like they have to make the judges think they’re somebody they’re not. But I told myself, ‘This is who I am,’” she said.

“Talking about my hands-on work with teaching was easy because it’s my everyday life. I think that’s the thing that set me apart, being genuine.”

Bennett’s next time co mpeting for a crown will be nationally, for Miss Teen USA. She has already begun preparing.

“I have to take the citizenship (公民身份) test, and watch the news to stay up [to date] on everything. It’s a lot, but I can handle it,” Bennett said.

American college students are becoming more adventuresome as they study abroad, showing less interests in English-speaking destinations such as Great Britain and Australia and more in such countries as China, India, Argentina and Brazil. Britain remained the most popular study destination in 2005, according to annual figures from the Institute of International Education, followed by Italy, Spain and France. But the number of American students studying in Britain and Australia descended a little, even as the number of American students abroad rose by 8%. The growth came in non-English speaking European countries and in Asia. China is now the eighth most popular destination for American students, attracting nearly 6,400 in 2005, up 35% from the number of the year before. Argentina and India saw increases of more than 50%. Allan Goodman, president of the Institute of International Education, said that a range of factors contributed to the trend, from growing awareness of globalization after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, to programs such as former President Bush's National Security Language Initiative, which trains soldiers, intelligence officers and diplomats in foreign languages. “What Americans are doing is waking up and discovering there's a world out there,” he said. Other figures showed the flow of students in the opposite direction, from foreign countries into American universities. The institute found that international enrollment (入学) in American higher education remained steady at about 565,000. The figures are of keen interest to universities, which depend on foreign students for teaching and research help, and to policy-makers, who consider it important, as future foreign leaders may be familiar with the United States. The year of 2005 saw big increases in students from South Korea, Mexico and Taiwan of China. India sends the most students and China is No.2. Other countries that show large percentage increases in the number of students sent to the US include Nepal and Vietnam, while Japan, Turkey and Malaysia saw declines. About 58% of international students in the US come from Asia. (1)What does the underlined word “descended” in Paragraph 2 means? A. Changed. B. Declined. C. Multiplied. D. Increased. (2)Why do more American students study in Asia? A. They expect to get more teaching and research help. B. They lose confidence in English-speaking countries. C. They are afraid that terrorist attacks will happen again. D. They prefer to explore a different world from their own. (3)Where were most foreign students in America from in 2005? A. China. B. India. C. Argentina. D. Britain. (4)What can we infer from the passage? A. There were 6,400 American students studying in China in 2005. B. Chinese students to America will overpass Indians in the future. C. International enrollment in American higher education changed a lot. D. Asian students

Average humans can consume 15 or more drinks in plastic bottles a month. If you were born after 1978, and live until 80 years old, you will leave behind a minimum of 14,400 plastic bottles on this planet. These bottles take hundreds of years to break down into tiny pieces of plastic, never to completely disappear. Most of the waste is consumed by fish and birds, which has shortened their lifetime greatly. The Plastic Bottle Village is just a great idea that might finally save us from being buried in plastic. It's a community in Panama that is going to be made of used bottles. The design process begins with building steel frames, which are then filled with these bottles. Once this step is complete, and electrical and plumbing (管道装置) lines are put inside, the plastic walls are covered by concrete—both inside and outside. So no one will actually be able to tell that the walls are made of plastic. Besides, the material will keep the house 17°C cooler than the outside, which is the biggest benefit to people living inside. The village is the brainchild (主意) of Robert Bezeau with the intention of setting up several environmental projects. Having started a recycling program four years ago, during which a number of plastic bottles were collected, he started to think of how they could be put to use. Soon enough, he decided to use them to build houses, and came up with a basic idea for the construction process. The project hopes to make people conscious of the waste that these bottles create so that they can do more to protect the environment. The village will also create an education center that will teach individuals from the world how to reuse plastic bottles as construction materials for shelter. Recycled bottles could neutralize the negative effect of your passage on this planet, and move closer to leaving only your “footprints”. (1)What does Paragraph 1 intend to tell us? A. The reason for buying fewer drinks. B. The difficult situation of wildlife. C. The amount of plastic waste. D. The seriousness of plastic pollution. (2)What is the biggest benefit to people living in the Plastic Bottle Village? A. The house will be much cooler than normal ones. B. The material of construction will be reduced a lot. C. The newly-made house can save a lot of electricity. D. The waste of the house can be consumed by fish and birds. (3)Which of the following words can best describe Robert? A. Creative. B. Courageous. C. Enthusiastic. D. Sensitive.(4)The main purpose of Robert's projects is to A. provide shelter for locals B. reuse all deserted plastic bottles C. popularize the use of plastic bottles D. raise people's environmental awareness 【答案】(1)D (2)A

The setting was a packed gymnasium just before the start of a game against another school. There were five girls who were members of the Danville High School basketball team—all of them starters. They were not in uniform to play that night and would not be on the team for the rest of this season. They were there to admit their breaking of team rules. They were there to support their coach's decision to take them off the team. They were there to let the town know there was a problem in their little community that needed to be addressed. And they did it with sincere regret rather than defensiveness. While the school had been out for the New Year's holiday, the five girls had gone to the party with several of their friends. There was alcohol there. And they all drank some. Coach Rainville has a zero tolerance rule on drugs and alcohol for her members though it was a hard decision to make. When classes resumed and accounts of holiday parties were shared, rumors about the five girls began closing in on them. The coach said she couldn't back down on her rules. And the players—two junior students and three senior students—agreed. That night in the gym was part of their public support of the coach's decision. “We hope you will understand that we are not bad kids. What we did was definitely not worth it. We hope this event will make everyone realize that there is a big drug and alcohol problem in our community,” one of the senior students said, “And if you work with us to try to solve this problem, you will help us feel that we have not been thrown off our basketball team for nothing.” The five left the floor to deafening applause. The team may not win another game this year. But they've learnt something about personal responsibility, the effect of one's action on others, and honesty that will serve them well throughout life. (1)It can be inferred from the passage that the five girls who were kicked off the team were ________. A. very good players on the team B. addicted to alcohol and drugs C. three junior students and two senior students D. scolded by their parents for drinking alcohol (2)What did the girls do to support their coach's decision? A. They didn't fight for Danville High School any more. B. They all gave speeches to apologize in the local press. C. They admitted their mistake in public in the gymnasium. D. They would never drink any alcohol throughout their life. (3)Which word best describes the coach Rainville? A. Indifferent. B. Strict. C. Stubborn. D. Cruel. (4)Which would be the best title for the passage? A. Growing up with pain B. A bad mistake C. Team rules are everything D. Basketball girls in high school 【答案】(1)A
