1.【2017年内蒙古赤峰】根据短文内容,完成表格,每空一词。请将正确答案填写在答题卡指定的横线上。Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky in 1809. His mother died when he was ten years old. Later, his family moved to Illinois and his father remarried. The family was poor, so they had to struggle just to live. In Illinois, there were neither teachers nor schools, but Lincoln’s stepmother encouraged him to study. He learned to read and write while working on the farm.

At twenty-one, Lincoln left home. He soon received a law license and became a lawyer. People trusted him and began to call him “Honest Abe”.

During the following years, he took a more active part in polities. Soon he was not only a highly respected lawyer but also a well-known politician. He was elected the sixteenth president of the United States in 1860, and in the next year the Civil War broke out.

The Civil War was between the southern states that wanted to leave the Union and form their own country, and northern states that wanted to keep all the states as one country. The southern states wanted to keep the laws that allowed them to own slaves. Both the northern states and President Lincoln wanted to get rid of those laws. On April 9, 1865, the Civil War ended and all slaves were set free.

Less than a week later, on April 14, 1865, Abraham Lincoln was shot at the Ford Theater in Washington D.C. He died the next day from his wounds.

As he ran down the street with a light heart to the bookshop, he saw a poor German family—the father, mother and three children walking in the cold wind.

The man shook his head again, because he could not understand or speak English. But he pointed to his mouth, and to the children, he seemed to say, “These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time.”

Oct.16 is World Food Day. The UN started the day in 1979. It's used to remind people not to waste food and fight hunger.

A big number of people in the world still don't have enough food to eat. Food shortage(匮乏)is a big problem worldwide. Right now, there are more than 1,000 million hungry people in the world according to the UN. Many children go to sleep hungry, and 15 million of them die of hunger each year.

There are s everal reasons why there are food shortages. First, there have been more droughts(干旱)and floods recently. Also, a growing population makes feeding everyone more difficult.

Another big reason is food waste. Most people don't realize how much food they throw away every day. Sometimes we cook too much, or we don't use it before it goes bad. The average(平均的)person throws away 50kg of food every year. According to the UN, more than one third of all food produced worldwide goes to waste each year.

That is over1,300,000 million kilograms of food being wasted. The amount of food wasted in Europe can feed 200 million people, and the food wasted in Latin America can feed 300 million a year.

So think twice next time you want to throw away food. By cutting down on food waste, we could help put food on the empty plates of some hungry children. Only order as much food as you can eat in a restaurant. If you can't eat all you order, take the rest home. Don't be too picky about food so that you don't leave any on your plate. Some food may not taste great, but your body needs it. Keep an eye on what food you have at home. Don't buy too much. Don't cook too much.

When you throw away food, you are not just wasting the food itself. Resources(资源)are also wasted while growing, transporting and cooking the food. These things all take energy, time and water.

English is the first language of several countries. However, it has many differences. British, American, and South African English are all spoken differently. In many English language courses, the British and American differences are taught. One is not more correct than the other, but there are important differences between the two.

Probably the biggest difference between American and British English is the vocabulary. Different words and expressions are used to talk about the same thing. For example, in the United States, people throw their garbage into the trash can. In England, people throw their rubbish into the dustbin. In Britain, people take a lift to the fifth floor. In America, people take an elevator.

American and British grammar can be also different. For example, speakers of British English will ask “What did you do at the weekend?”, but Americans usually say “on the weekend.”In the United States people usually say “I’ve gotten a new car.”, but in the UK they will say “I’ve just got a new car.”

The pronunciation in American and British English is also different, even when the spelling is the same. The word “tomato”—pronounced “to-mah-to”in B ritish English—is a classic example of this.

Vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation are three ways English is different in different parts of the world. Learning all these is not easy, so English learners should just know that they are always there.

2016年中考英语话题阅读理解专项练习 语言与学习(含答案)

语言与学习 一、阅读理解(共20小题;共40分) A British people have always been good at saying "I'm sorry". They used to be so good at it that they would apologize(道歉) for things that weren't even their fault. However, the British seem to be losing touch with their art. According to a new book by British writer Max Davidson, instead of saying "I'm sorry" when they do something wrong, British people prefer to choose their words carefully. In this book, Sorry—The Hardest Word and How to Use It, Davidson writes about a number of recent apologies. One example is of British television host Jeremy Clarkson. He described Gordon Brown, the UK prime minister (首相), as "a one-eyed Scottish idiot(笨蛋)". (Brown is blind in his left eye) Clarkson was forced to apologize. He said, "In the heat of the moment, I made a remark(评论) about the prime minister. Now I apologize of reflection." Davidson says the apology was just "going through the motions(做表面文章)". Clarkson is not the only one. The best example may come from the UK MP(议员) Tessa Jowell. She said publicly, "If you feel our government falls short of what you expect, then I say sorry for that." Jowell said "sorry". But she is actually saying it's not the government's fault but the voters' fault for expecting too much from the government. Perhaps those people with influence feel they may lose too much by apologizing. But as a teenager, would you really want to lose a close friend, just because you couldn't say something as simple as, "I'm sorry"? That would be hard to forgive. 1. Who was the improper description "a one-eyed Scottish idiot" used to describe? A. Max Davidson. B. Jeremy Clarkson. C. Gordon Brown. D. Tessa Jowell. 2. What does the underlined sentence in the second paragraph mean? A. The British are still good at apologizing. B. The British like to say sorry for everything they have done.
