Bats have long been one of the most feared creatures in the animal kingdom. Many pop culture associations with them are related to vampire (吸血鬼) men tempting women in order to suck their blood or witches putting evil curses on innocent individuals.

Although these associations are complete misunderstandings, bats do have a dark side as a dangerous disease carrier. These flying mammals can carry a number of deadly diseases such as rabies (狂犬病) and more recently Ebola. This has led many to wonder why we should even care about them.

Sure, there is good reason to be exceptionally cautious if you come into contact with bats. However, there is no denying the fact that bats play a significant role in keeping a balanced ecosystem.

Many organic farmers have learned about the benefits of having bats nearby to help manage the pests that show up without pesticides (杀虫剂). One brown bat — about the size of a human thumb can consume about 600 mosquitoes and other unwanted insects within an hour. They make for a fantastic, almost essential, addition to pest management on any farm.

Even large government organizations have realized the economic benefits of bats. The United States Geological Survey estimates that bat contributions to pest management save the country at least 3.7 billion dollars per year. Without them, we would likely experience a sharp drop in food production, which would eventually make its way into our weekly grocery bills.

As if this were not enough of an ecosystem service we receive, bats are also of great importance to a variety of plant species that are preferential to its pollination (传粉). Otherwise, these plants would decrease their ability to reproduce by at least 50 percent.

A number of plant products consumed by humans fall into this preferential pollination category. Some popular foods include mangoes, bananas, peaches and guavas. Additionally, the agave (龙舌兰) plant, which is used to make tequila (龙舌兰酒), is completely dependent on bat pollinators for reproduction.

Bats are major contributors to our society. They are in the best interest of the international community to protect and even to promote. Amid significant fears housed by the general public, the fact is that we need them more than most of us imagine.

28.Why should we be cautious when we contact bats?

A. They carry diseases.

B. They are aggressive.

C. They bring bad luck.

D. They stay in the dark.

29.What are Paragraph 4, 5, 6 and 7 mainly about?

A. Our care about bats can never be too much.

C. Mosquitoes are a big threat to farming.

D. Bats make unusual contributions to us.

30.Who are the target readers of the passage?

Not that long ago, the world wondered whether clean energy could survive without government support. Now the question is how far it can spread. The number of electric vehicles,

which was about 1 million in 2015, last year reached 2 million. In electricity generation, too, trend is with the greens. In the first half of this year, wind, solar and hydro generated a record 35% of Germany’s power.

Greater success is breeding greater ambition. California is proposing to reach 60% renewable energy by 2030. 176 countries have clean-energy goals. Hawaii, America’s most oil-dependent state, has promised to be 100% renewable by the middle of the century and so have 48 poor countries vulnerable to climate change. This week the number of multinationals making a commitment to running their operations on 100% renewable energy rose to 100.

But not every target is helpful. To see why, consider that goal of 100% renewable energy. It makes solving climate change seem easy. In fact, though wind and solar can generate the whole county’s electricity some day, renewables still account for less than 8% of the world’s total power output. Moreover, cleaning up electricity is only part of the battle. Even though gas-fired heating and cooking can be at least as big a source of greenhouse-gas emissions, renewable heating gets little attention. Transport policy is unpredictable, too. Car manufacturers may hit their goal of annual sales of 10 million electric vehicles in a decade, but battery-powered road transport, shipping and aviation (航空) are dreams. A much-quoted claim that America could rely on wind, solar and hydro alone for its electricity has recently been bitterly criticized by a group of respected academics.

Most importantly, a 100% renewables target confuses means with ends. The priority for the planet is to stop net emissions (净排放量) of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide. Putting too much emphasis on wind, solar and other renewables may block off better carbon-reduction paths. New technologies, such as “direct air capture” systems designed to separate carbon dioxide from the air, may in time prove vital. Likewise, greater energy efficiency could reduce emissions by even more than using renewables would.

32.Why is Germany mentioned in Paragraph 1?

A.To introduce the topic.

B.To provide a successful example of producing clean energy.

C.To compare with the USA.

D.To prove the possibility of the 100% renewables target.

33.What picture is described at the beginning of the passage?

A. A tough fight against c limate change.

B. A huge market of electric vehicles.

C. A promising future of clean energy.

D. A fierce competition between countries.

34.Why is every target not realistic according to Paragraph 3?

A.Car makers cannot produce enough batteries.

B.New energy doesn’t receive its due attention in every aspect of society.

https://www.360docs.net/doc/f211581362.html,e of traditional energies causes air pollution.

D.We are lacking in enough wind and solar energy to generate electricity.

35.Which of the following does the writer probably agree with?

A.Energy efficiency is superior to using renewables.

B.People can only use new energy in reality.

C.Mixing up means with purposes matters most.

D.The target of 100 renewables is too high to reach.

If you’re looking for natural, chemical-free ways to clean your home, look no further than the fruit bowl on your kitchen counter. 36 Here are ways a lemon can help you to clean your entire house.

A common use of lemon is cleaning your cutting boards. Because it’s the place where you prepare your family’s dinner, you probably don’t want to wash a cutting board with anything othe r than the most natural materials. 37 To remove stains from wood or plastic cutting boards, cut a lemon in half and squeeze the juice onto the board. Rub the juice in with the lemon half, and then let sit for 20 minutes. 38

Lemon can also help clean stained food containers. If you have a cupboard full of discolored plastic containers, let a lemon work its stain-fighting magic. Squeeze lemon juice onto the stained plastic and rub with the cut side of the lemon. 39 Stubborn sauce stains will disappear.

Lemon can be used as a degreaser ( 除油器) on almost any hard surface besides wood. Combine the mixture of fresh lemon juice and baking soda in a spray bottle and shake well. The lemon fights stain, and destroys bacteria, while the soda acts as a gently rubbing agent.

40 Add stained clothing to a pot of water with a few lemon slices, and then boil for a few minutes. In this way you can freshen up the appearance of white clothes and towels.

A.You may just add a little more lemon juice.

B.Lemons have a surprising amount of cleaning power.

C.Another use of lemon is getting white clothes brighter.

2015哈三中一模英语科

哈尔滨三中2015年第一次模拟考试 英语试卷笔试部分 第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) A One hometown owner in Detroit is intending to exchange his villa for the latest iPhone 6. The owner has dropped the asking price from $ 5,000 to a new iPhone 6 as the owner is desperate to sell before the tax auction (拍卖) season where ―thousands‖ of homes near foreclosure (房屋止赎权) will flood into the market, a real estate broker (房地产经纪人) called Larry Else told ABC News. ―This house is really not worth much at all,‖ Else said. The windows are broken and there is no front door. The broker himself has not been inside the home because his company has a policy of not going in unsecured houses alone. Detroit’s declining fortunes have left its population about a third of what it used to be in its peak, according to the U.S. Census Bureau(人口普查办公室). Now, the property has accrued (拖欠) more than $6,000 in back taxes (退税款) and will enter foreclosure next year if that debt is not settled. So while the owner is asking for an iPhone 6, the true cost of the sale comes from the buyer including the cost of the back taxes. That attracted great interest in the property, as Else said that he received four offers today alone. One woman said she was interested in the house for the wood. Another said that they would be willing to hand over an iPhone 5, and another offered $ 850. But Else hinted that the most likely buyer is someone who already lives on the block and put in a $ 700 bid(出价), and their familiarity with the area appeared to put them at the head of the pack. He said he expects one of the four offers to work out, and may even confirm the sale tonight. This is not the end of his bartering (物物交换) business, however, as Else said that he’s already gotten another call from a homeowner who has had trouble selling their property. 21.Why did the owner drop his price for the house? A.Because the house was too old. B.Because there is a boom in economy. C.Because he wanted to sell the house quickly. D.Because the population in Detroit is small. https://www.360docs.net/doc/f211581362.html,rry Else hasn’t come into the house because _______. A.it is dangerous to enter it B.the owner doesn’t permit it C.he is not familiar with the area D.it will break the company’s rule 23.The house will most possibly be sold at the price of _______. A. $ 5,000 B. $ 850 C. $ 700 D. an iPhone 6 24.The passage is most probably taken from ________. A. a story book B. a news report C. an economy report D. a tourist brochure B Regardless of the fact that getting dressed in baseball caps and T-shirts are classic American style choices; the preppy(学院风格) look is what sophisticated(高雅时髦的) British youths wear. But when it comes to the best-dressed nation, neither the US nor the UK tops CNN’s list. So which country has the best fashion sense? Take a look. Italy
