Text 1

W: Did you go to the party held in the dining hall?

M: Yes, it was supposed to start at 6: 30 p. m. , but it was delayed for 30 minutes.

Text 2

M: I’ve heard you traveled a round Europe last year. Is it true?

W: Not exactly. I visited three countries there, like France. I had planned to see Finland and Iceland, but I had to come back for my business.

Text 3

W: Have you brought the book I lent you?

M: I’m sorry. It completely slipped my mind. I promise I will bring it tomorrow.

Text 4

W: What is your plan for the coming weekend?

M: To take my son to the Children’s Park on Saturday, on Sunday morning to do shopping with my wife, and in the afternoon to keep my parents company at home.

Text 5

M: The university library is hiring these days. I’d like you to get ready for the interview.

W: I’ve found a suitable job in a bank, but thanks anyway.

Text 6

M: Congratulations, Betty.

W: Thank you. What about Peter?

M: Oh, he dropped the stick.

W: Bad luck! Do you know who won the high jump?

M: My classmate, Joe.

W: Your class did very well at the sports meeting. By the way, who was first in the men’s 100-meter race?

M: It definitely belongs to Bob.

Text 7

W: Andy, you’ve been so busy lately that we don’t see you any more.

M: I’ve been trying to finish this research project so that I can present my findings at the conference in July.

W: But that’s two months away. You’ve still got a lot of time.

M: Not really. You see, I’ve finish ed all the research, and I’ve just organized all my notes, but it will take me almost two months to type them.

W: Well, if that’s your only problem, I can type up your paper in less than two weeks.

Text 8

M: Well, Lucy, why do you look unhappy?

W: Oh, Mi ke. I’ve made three bad mistakes so far this week. This morning I forgot to give a very important message to my father, so he got really angry with me.

M: But you’re usually very careful and never make mistakes. What’s the matter with you?

W: I’m very tired. I don’t know what I’m doing these days.

M: Have you gone to bed late recently?

W: I’m usually in bed at about ten. But I am woken up at half past four every morning. And then I can’t go back to sleep.

M: Why?

W: It’s my new neighbor. He has to get up at half past four every morning and he always turns his radio on loudly. M: Ask him to turn it down then.

W: OK. I’ll have to talk with him.

Text 9

W: Hey, Adam. I’m worried about my sister Alice. She’s in college and has just declared art as her major.

M: Why does that worry you? I’ve seen her paintings. She’s very talented in art.

W: I know. But I’m afraid that once she graduates she won’t be able to make ends meet. It is said that most artists only make about 60 percent of what the average person m akes a year. What’s more, it’s harder for art majors to find a full-time job. But she doesn’t seem too concerned.

M: But you’re forgetting that there’s more for them to choose. Alice loves art and that’s what’s important. Even if she can’t make much money, she’ll be happy and emotionally satisfied.

W: But she’ll have bills to pay. It’s going to be hard for her to lead a life on what an artist makes.

M: Don’t be worried and I know what you mean. Let’s have a talk with Alice and listen to her.

W: OK. If she insists on her idea, we’ll support her.

Text 10

One Sunday, a young couple, who had just fallen in love, was having dinner at an expensive restaurant. The restaurant had a garden-like and elegant environment. The food there was delicious and the service was superb. They had just ordered their dishes when they saw a lady sitting alone, looking at them. They smiled politely, but were a little surprised when the old lady came over to their table. The old lady told the young woman that she looked like her daughter. She said it would make her happy if they said “Goodbye, Mum” when she left the restaurant. How could they refuse? A few minutes later, the old lady stood up to leave. The young couple waved, as she had asked them, and said goodbye as the old lady walked out. When the young couple received their bill, they saw that it included the cost of the old lady’s meal. They called over the manager and asked him what happened. “The bill includes the charge for your mother’s meal, ” he explained. “She said you would pay. ”

A

We all like fantasy stories, and grow up reading and listening to fantasies. These tales fuel our imaginations, and satisfy our longings for adventures. The most interesting thing about fantasies is that their plots involve magical beasts and heroes, animal creatures talking like humans, and other things we can’t see in real life. Also, fantasies have a distinguished writing style, with freedom of expression.

Toy Fantasy

In toy fantasy stories, narrators(叙述者)bring their beloved toys to life that can live, talk, think, breathe and behave like human beings. You would see modern toy fantasies in a picture book format. Representative works are A.

A. Milne’s Winnie the Pooh and Carlo Collodi’s The Adventures of Pinocchio.

Animal Fantasy

The animal fantasy tells tales about animals behaving like human beings, experiencing emotions, and having the ability to talk. However, animals in fantasies hold their various animal characteristics, too. Examples include The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame, Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White, and The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter which influences children around the world.

Magical Fantasy

In a magical fantasy, you see a character having magical powers, or a strange magical object becomes the subject of the story. Stories of this type began widely spreading long ago, including Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate

Factory and William Steig’s Sylvester and the Magic Pebble.

Modern Folktales

Modern folktales are types of fantasy that narrators tell in a traditional tale accompanying some typical parts, such as strong conflict, little description of characters, and sometimes magical elements. These tales come before all others and are popular, as authors throughout history, have written them. Hans Christian Andersen has written several tales of this category including The Nightingale, The Emperor’s New Clothes and Thumbelina.

Joseph Francis Charles Rock (1884–1962) was an Austrian-American explorer, botanist, and anthropologist(人类学家). For more than 25 years, he travelled extensively through Tibet and Yunnan, Gansu, and Sichuan provinces in China before finally leaving in 1949.

In 1924, Harvard sent Joseph Francis Rock on a treasure hunt through China’s southwestern provinces—the Wild West of their day. But gold and silver weren’t his task : Rock, a distinguished botanist, sought only to fill his bags with all the seeds, saplings, and shrubs he could find. During his three-year expedition, he collected 20,000 specimens for the Arnold Arboretum(阿诺德植物园).

Botany, though, was just one of Rock’s strengths. As an ethnologist(民族学者), he took hundreds of photographs of the Naxi, a tribe in Yunnan province, recording their now-lost way of life for both Harvard and National Geographic, and took notes for an eventual 500-page dictionary of their language. His hand-drawn map of his travels through China’s “Cho-Ni” territory, in the Harvard Map Collection, includes more than a tho usand rivers, towns, and mountains indicated in both English and Chinese, and was so well made that the U.S. government used it to plan aerial missions in World War II.

Scientist, linguist, cartographer, photographer, writer—Rock was not a wallflower in any sense. Arrogant and self-possessed, he would walk into a village or warlord’s place “as if he owned the place,” said Lisa Pearson, the Arboretum’s head librarian.

In declaring his successful return under the headline “Seeking Strange Flowers, in the Far Reaches of the World” , the Boston Evening Transcript ran a large photo of the daring explorer wearing in a woolly coat and fox-skin hat. “In discussing his heroism including hair-raising escapes from death either from mountain slides, snow slides and robb er armies, he waves the idea away as if it is of no importance.”

The Arboretum and Rock parted ways after 1927, mainly because his trip cost Harvard a fortune—about $900,000 in today’s dollars. Fortunately, many of his specimens, many of his amazing photos, and his great stories remain.

Like Indiana Jones (a fictional character), who undertakes daring adventures in his spare time, my father is a

businessman by day and a thrill-seeker by night.

His enthusiasm rubbed off on me, and I have been lucky to be his companion on many adventures. We started out by riding America’s fastest, most twisted roller coasters. After that a whitewater rafting trip through the Grand Canyon(峡谷)on the Colorado River started our search for other extreme thrills across the globe.

Amazing thrills awaited us at every corner of the world. Skydiving was especially thrilling when performed from a helicopter over the breathtaking Swiss Alps. We have bungee jumped from the world’s highest platform, Bloukrans Bridge in South Africa. Most recently, in Interlaken, Switzerland, we attempted canyoning(溪降运动).

Anyone who loves a challenging thrill should try canyoning. Our adventure began with a 90-foot rope down a canyon wall into a rushing ice-cold river. Then we crossed the bone-chilling water toward the mouth of the river, our final destination, where the reward for the journey would be a whole view of the beautiful Interlaken basin. We slid over slippery rocks at one moment, jumped from waterfalls and swam through underwater tunnels the next. Back and forth we alternated, climbing rope ladders before going back into the fresh mountain water. Certainly, danger was waiting for us in each of these activities, but that very danger provided the rush. Canyoning was indeed one thrill after another, from beginning to end.

While canyoning is possible only in certain places, thrills and adventure can be found anywhere. Our beginnings in the U.S. showed us just that. We continue to seek the big thrills, but in doing so, we have learned to seek lesser excitement in daily life as well. After all, we can’t go canyoning every day, and small thrills are better than none for us thrill-seekers.

【语篇解读】这是一篇记叙文。短文叙述了作者和父亲从事的冒险活动,作者认为日常生活中的小小的冒险刺激总比没有要好。

28. What do we know about the author’s father?

A. He is a very successful businessman.

B. He is doing a part-time job.

C. He likes Indiana Jones very much.

D. He enjoys experiencing adventures.

29. What does the underlined phrase “rubbed off on” mean in paragraph 2?

A. relate to

B. keep off

C. affect

D. confuse

【答案】C

【解析】词义猜测题。由第二段划线后的句子I have been lucky to be his companion on many adventures.可

知,我很幸运能和他一起经历许多冒险。所以父亲对于冒险的热情影响了作者,故通过上下文可

以判断出,划线词的意思是”影响”的意思。故选C项。

30. What did the author and his father do when attempting canyoning?

A. Jumped down from waterfalls and swam across the icy water.

B. Jumped down a canyon river and crossed it.

C. Climbed over a rope ladder and swam through underwater tunnels.

D. Climbed down a canyon wall and swam across the rushing icy river.

【答案】D

【解析】细节理解题。由第四段Our adventure began with a 90-foot rope down a canyon wall into a rushing ice-cold river. Then we crossed the bone-chilling water toward the mouth of the river, our final

31. What does the author want to tell us in the last paragraph?

A. Small thrills in daily life are worth a try as well.

B. We had better go abroad to experience canyoning.

C. Canyoning is not suitable for everyone.

D. America is the most proper place to experience adventures.

【答案】A

【解析】推理判断题。由最后段We continue to seek the big thrills, but in doing so, we have learned to seek lesser excitement in daily life as well. After all, we can’t go canyoning every day, and small thrills are

better than none for us thrill-seekers.

故选A项。

D

Artemis is NASA’s new lunar exploration program. Through the Artemis program, NASA will use new technology to study the Moon in new and better ways, and prepare for human missions to Mars.

NASA’s new rocket will carry the Orion spacecraft to lunar orbit. Then, astronauts will dock(对接)Orion at a small spaceship called the Gateway, from which the crew will take trips to the lunar surface in a new human landing

system, and then return to the Gateway. The crew will return to the Earth aboard Orion.

NASA will test the rocket and spacecraft in flight, then send a crew for a test flight:

Artemis 1 will be a test flight of the SLS rocket with the Orion spacecraft with no crew.

Artemis 2 will fly SLS and Orion with a crew past the Moon, then circle it and return to the Earth. This trip will be the farthest any human has gone into space.

Artemis 3 will send a crew with the first woman and the next man to land on the Moon by 2024. The Artemis 3 crew will visit the Moon’s South Pole. No one has ever been there.

At the Moon, astronauts will:

Search for the Moon’s water and use it.

Learn how to live and work on the surface of another celestial body(天体)where astronauts are just three days from home.

Test the technologies we need before sending astronauts on missions to Mars, which can take up-to three years round trip.

The Moon is a good place to learn new science. NASA will learn more about the Moon, the Earth and even the Sun. The Moon is a “test bed” for Mars. The Moon is a place to show that astronauts will one day be able to work away from the Earth on Mars for long periods of time.

Li Hua 【答案】

Dear Sir,

I have just finished traveling in Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes. The scenery there is really beautiful, but it is suffering from damages due to natural forces such as frequent sandstorms. What’s worse, some tourists even carve their names on the walls, making me heartbroken.

I strongly feel it significant to protect cultural heritage. For one thing, cultural heritage, which is the witness to the historical development, is an important basis for historical research. For another, it is likely to provide a source of tourism income, if maintained well.

So I hope the authorities can take measures to protect Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, such as raising people’s

awareness by handing out leaflets on perserving cultural heritage. Besides, strict regulations should be made to fine spoilers. Planting more trees is also a good way to prevent sandstorms.

I would appreciate it if my suggestions were accepted.

Sincerely,

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

My family and I go to the Big Island of Hawaii in the United States every year. Each year, we do the same things-spend time at the beaches, surfing and fishing. On this trip, however, my family got tired of this holiday style and wanted to do something different. We learned from a local that there was a hot spring on the island called the Boiling Pots. Without doing any research, we decided to set off on an adventure to that spot.

We drove to the destination, but were surprised to find that the area was closed off by a fence(栅栏). Reading the sign placed in front of the gate, we found out it was, in fact, a forbidden area that lay at the bottom of the mountain. And we were on the mountaintop. Seemingly out of nowhere, a strange man came up to us. He told us he would go to the Boiling Pots and that he would show us the way down there if we would just jump over the fence and follow him. After some discussion, my family, 8 members, followed the man past the fence.

The ‘‘path’’ was a slope(斜坡)covered in mud and high grass. Several times, our members fell but nobody gave up and turned back because it seemed an amazing adventure.

After about one hour’s walk, we arrived at the bottom finally, but a large river stopped us. The strange man went to borrow a boat from his friend living nearby. We stood on the bank, waiting for him and joking that we could swim across the river.

Just then, I heard the voice of my father screaming at us to move. I looked up to the sky and saw a large tree falling towards us. I ran forward, pushing the people in front of me. I fell to the ground, hearing a loud sound of the tree hitting the ground, along with pieces of branches surrounding us.
