My father once told me an anecdote from his youth. It involved his father—my grandfather.

One weekend day, my grandfather went to the store and brought a new board game home for the family. He excitedly asked my father and his sister (who were 7 and 9 at the time) if they wanted to play. They did. They joined in the unexpected activity at the kitchen table as he opened up the game, read the instructions and explained to them how to play, divided up the cards and put all the pieces where they go. He pictured his father sitting there at the table with all the cards and pieces laid out. He pictured him waiting for a little while before accepting that it wasn’t going to happen today, then collecting all the cards he had placed happily, putting them back in the box and then in the closet regretfully.

My dad offered me the story. The image of my grandfather made me feel sorry. If asked what my biggest pity is, I have to admit “I missed so many chances to accompany

my parents and grandparents who just wanted to see their children’s growth.” My grandfather probably has forgotten about the incident. But I’ve decided to buy a board game to play with him and my dad to regain the precious moments.

High school is a great experience. You’ll remember what you did in high school for the rest of your life, and some of it might follow you throughout your life. Some of your most important decisions you’ll make will be made in high school, especially your senior year. Decisions like “what do I want to do after high school, where do I want to go, and how will I make it.”

They can be worrying, and some of the answers can be difficult to find. Most students want to go to college—they want to start a life, to have fun and party, and to be independent. Some students even know exactly what they want to do and what college they want to go to for study.

But the most important question a student has to ask and an important one for parents to find out is “How I get there?” The application process can be a little

tricky, but most admissions counselors（顾问）and high school counselors are readily available to help and ease the process considerably.

Most colleges and universities have created an online application process. Now, most students have no problem in applying to the colleges of their choice. However, that’s only half of the battle. Paying for college is hard and with the current economic conditions, finding money is becoming increasingly more competitive.

Most students don’t know where to look for the money. Even students who are in great academic standing often receive less money than they qualify for, simply because they don’t know how or where to look for scholarships. Increasingly more students that are in low academic standing are finding ways to pay for college, simply as they’ve figured out where to look.

Now, to find these scholarships, several options are available. Many school guidance counselors offer links to local organizations that offer scholarships for students.

December was a “big deal” in Sweden and Finland not only because of Christmas, but because Saint Lucia’s Day was Dec. 13th. Starting in kindergarten and continuing all throughout high school, on this day one lucky girl was selected to be “Saint Lucia”. For many girls, this was a big deal, though I personally really feared being picked and much preferred being one of Lucia’s handmaids.

It isn’t certain how the Saint Lucia tradition found its way to Sweden, and then also to Finland. The legend of Saint Lucia is known in most European countries, and has its roots in Italy. It is thought that during a time when he rulers of the land did not approve of Christianity, a woman named Lucia decided to try and spread the word God and help the poor. Lucia was pout on trial, and when she refused to give up her belief, she was sentenced to be burned. But when the guards tried to light the fire, it would not light. Unfortunately, this did not save Lucia, who at last was killed by a knife.

No one knows exactly how this legend has changed into the unique Swedish tradition today, but there are certainly some elements that can be recognized. Saint Lucia, a girl dressed in a long white dress with a crown of candles in her hair, brings light and good spirit to everybody, lightening up the cold December weather.

Both in Sweden and Finland Saint Lucia is a nationally celebrated tradition. The people of the city or town can then vote for their favorite girl out of several candidates, and the winner is crowned on December 13th together with her entourage （随从）. This year, 18-year-old high school student Elin Andersson was crowned Lucia, and following her coronation（加冕礼）she will appear at around 80 different events over the next month in her role as “a bringer of light”.

When you go for a walk outside, you will often see some kind of insect. If your first instinct is to kill it, take a moment to think about all of the benefits insects provide to the environment.

Entomologists, scientists who study insects estimate that there are more than 800,000 species insects found throughout the world. Only a few hundred of these insects are considered harmful. Mosquitoes, for example, are considered harmful. They bite humans and other animals, and their bites cause skin pain and can spread disease. Desert locusts also are considered harmful because they destroy crops causing billions of dollars in damage each year.

However, the number of helpful insect species far outweighs the number of harmful species, some insects make up a vital part of the food chain. Many different birds,

reptiles, fish and even plants eat insects. There are also about 500 insects that people in various parts of the world eat. These insects are considered delicious food and prized for their high protein, mineral, and vitamin content. Other insects produce valuable commercial products such as silk, wax, and honey.

Of all the insects, perhaps the most important are those that travel from flower to flower and pollinate（授粉）the plants they visit. Agriculture around the world would be very different without the bees, butteries, moths, flies and wasps that pollinate many crops. In fact, nearly one-third of the food you eat depends on plants that are pollinated by insects!

While it is true that some species of insects harm or annoy us, you should not automatically reach for the bug spray（杀虫剂）when you come across an insect. You may be destroying one of the hundreds of thousands of insects that provides many benefits to human beings.
