第一节(共15小题;每小题3分,满分45分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A.

When I was growing up, I had an old neighbor named Doctor Gibbs. He didn't look like any doctor I'd ever known. He never yelled at us for playing in his yard, but was always very kind.

When Doctor Gibbs wasn't saving lives, he was planting trees. He had some interesting theories about planting trees. He believed in the principle: "No pain, no gain". He hardly watered his new trees, which flew in the face of conventional wisdom. Once I asked why and he told me that watering plants spoiled them because it made them grow weaker. He said you had to make things tough for the trees so that only the strongest could survive. He talked about how watering trees made them develop shallow roots and how, if they were not watered, trees would grow deep roots in search of water. So, instead of watering his trees every morning, he'd beat them with a rolled-up newspaper. I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the tree's attention.

Doctor Gibbs died a couple of years after I left home. Every now and then, I walked by his house and looked at the trees that I'd watched him plant some twenty five years ago. They were all tall and strong.

I planted a couple of trees myself a few years ago. Two years of attending these trees meant they grew up weak. Whenever a cold wind blew, their branches trembled. Adversity(逆境) seemed to benefit Doctor Gibb's trees in ways comfort and ease never could.

Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons. I often pray that their lives will be easy. But lately I've been thinking that it's time to change my prayer. I know my children are going to meet with hardship. There's always a cold wind blowing somewhere. What we need to do is to pray for deep roots, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we won't be torn apart.

21. With the trees planted, Doctor Gibbs often __________

A. kept watering them every morning

B. paid little attention to them

C. talked to them to get their attention

D. beat them to make them grow deep roots

22. What does the author think of the way Doctor Gibbs planted trees?

A. strange and harmful

B. interesting and funny

C. original and reasonable

D. cruel and unacceptable

23. Which prayer does the author wish for his sons?

A. Have an easy life, without too much to worry about.

B. Meet people like Dr Gibbs in the future.

C. Have good luck, encountering less hardship in their life.

D. Be able to stand the rain and wind in their lives.

24. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?

A. Prayers for my sons

B. Doctor Gibbs and his trees

C. Growing roots

D. Watering trees

You get anxious if there?s no wi-fi in the hotel or mobile phone signal up the mountain. You feel upset if your phone is getting low on power, and you secretly worry things will go wrong at work if you?re not there. All these can be called “always on” stress caused by smart phone addiction.

For some people, smart phones have liberated them from the nine-to-five work. Flexible working has given them more autonomy(自主权) in their working lives and enabled them to spend more time with their friends and families. For many others though, smart phones have become tyrants (暴君) in their pockets, never allowing them to turn them off, relax and recharge their batteries.

Pittsburgh-based developer Kevin Holesh was worried about how much he was ignoring his family and friends in favour of his iPhone. So he developed an app — Moment — to monitor his usage. The app enables users to see how much time they?re spending on the device and set up warnings if the usage limits are breached (突破). “Moment?s goal is to promote balance in your life,” his website explains. “Some time on your phone, some time off it enjoying your loving family and friends around you.”

Dr Christ ine Grant, an occupational psychologist at Coventry University, said, “The effects of this …always on? culture are that your mind is never resting, and you?re not giving your body time to recover, so you?re always stressed. And the more tired and stressed we get, the more mistakes we make. Physical and mental health can suffer.”

And as the number of connected smart phones is increasing, so is the amount of data. This is leading to a sort of decision paralysis (瘫痪) and is creating more stress in the workplace because people have to receive a broader range of data and communications which are often difficult to manage. “It actually makes it more difficult to make decisions and many do less because they?re controlled by it all and feel they can never escape the office,” said Dr Christine Grant.

25. What?s the first paragraph mainly about?

A. The popularity of smart phones.

B. The progress of modern technology.

C. The signs of “always on” stress.

D. The cause of smart phone addicti on.

26. Kevin Holesh developed Moment to __________.

A. research how people use their mobile phones

B. help people control their use of mobile phones

C. make people better use mobile phones

D. increase the fun of using mobile phones

27. What?s Dr Christine Grant?s attitude towards “always on” culture?

A. Confused.

B. Positive.

C. Doubtful.

D. Critical.

28. According to the last paragraph, a greater amount of data means __________.

A. we will become less productive

B. we can make a decision more quickly

C. we will be equipped with more knowledge

D. we can work more effectively

C

Selena Gomez and I are scheduled to meet at a low-key coffee shop in Encino. Not wanting to keep the superstar waiting, I arrived at nine, 20 minutes early. As I was catching up on e-mails, Selena quietly scooted into the seat next to me. No bodyguard. Not even a drop of makeup. She was ten minutes early and so inconspicuous that no one else in the restaurant looked up so much. Selena was wearing Bebe shorts. She had a baby face and ordered a hot chocolate.

After making small talk about what she wore for the shoot, she dived into the subject of her career. Selena declared 2012 the year of movies. She filmed three: Spring Breakers, a drama; The Getaway, an action flick; and Hotel Transylvania, a comedy. Each is a marked move away from the teen style that made her a household name.

Now that her Disney days are behind her, Selena is at that unstable point i n a child star?s career where she is trying to grow up---both as a person(she turned 20 in July)and as an artist. “Being part of the Disney Channel was such a blessing, and I?m super happy with what my show accomplished, but acting is something I would lik e to take on more seriously.” She continued, “I don?t necessarily feel accomplished. I want to creat a whole different person when it comes to acting.”

Selena has been working fulltime since she was seven years old and scored a role on Barney&Friends. In 2007, when she was offered the lead in Wizards of Waverly Place, Selena, her mother, and her stepfather uprooted from Grand Prairie, Texas, to LA, where they are settling now.

29. When was it that Selena arrived at the low-key coffee shop?

A. At ten.

B. At ten to nine.

C. At ten past nine.

D. At thirty past nine.

30. How did Selena think of Disney days which were behind her?

A. She thought of playing in Disney a blessing.

B. She didn?t feel very satisfied with her show in Disney.

C. She found her not accomplished in her performance in Disney.

D. She believed her being part in Disney Channel a blessing.

31. The underlined word in the last paragraph probably means “ _______”.

A. Moved

B. Picked

C. Changed

D. informed

D

With only about 1, 000 pandas left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone the animal and save the endangered species. That's a move similar to what the Texas A&M University researchers have been undertaking for the past five years in a project called “Noah's Ark”.Noah's Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos (胚胎), semen and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen. If certain species should become extinct, Dr Duane Kraemer, a professor in Texas A&M's College of Veterinary Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future.

It is estimated that as many as 2, 000 species of mammals, birds and reptiles will become extinct in over 100 years. The panda, native only to China, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years.

This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal.

The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete.

“The nuclear transfer (核子移植) of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available panda eggs could be a major problem,” Kraemer believes.

“They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy (怀孕). It takes a long time and it's difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk, so it is worth the effort,” adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A&M, the firstever attempt at cloning a dog.

“They are trying to do something that's never been done, and this is very similar to our work in Noah's Ark. We're both trying to save animals that face extinction. I certainly appreciate their effort and there's a lot we can learn from what they are attempting to do. It's a research that is very much needed.”

32.The aim of “Noah's Ark” project is to ________.

A.make efforts to clone the endangered pandas B.save endangered animals from dying out

C.collect DNA of endangered animals to study D.transfer the nuclear of one animal to another

33.According to Prof. Kraemer, the major problem in cloning pandas would be the lack of _____.

A.available panda eggs B.host animals

C.qualified researchers D.enough money

34.The best title of the passage may be ________.

A.China's Success in Pandas Cloning B.The First Cloned Panda in the World C.Exploring the Possibility to Clone Pandas D.China—the Native Place of Pandas Forever

35.From the passage we know that ________.

A.Kraemer and his team have succeeded in cloning a dog

B.scientists try to implant a panda's egg into a rabbit

C.Kraemer will work with Chinese scientists in clone researches

D.about two thousand species will probably die out in a century

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

It?s normal to wake briefly during the night.36 But if you?re waking up durin g the night and having trouble falling back asleep, the following tips may help.

Stay out of your head. The key to getting back to sleep is continuing to prepare your body for sleep, so remain in bed in a relaxed position. Hard as it may be, try not to stress over the fact that you?re awake, because that very stress and anxiety encourage your body to stay awake.37

38 If you are finding it hard to fall back asleep, try a relaxation technique such as visualization(想象), or deep breathing, which can be done without even getting out of bed. Remind yourself that although they?re not a replacement for sleep, rest and relaxation still help refresh your body.

Do a quiet, non-stimulating activity. If you?ve been awake for more than 15 minutes, try getting out of bed and doing a quiet, non-stimulating activity, such as reading a book. Keep the lights dim so as not to think that it?s time to wake up. 39 A light snack might relax you, but be careful not to eat so much that your body begins to expect a meal at that time of the day.

40 If you wake during the night feeling anxious about something, make a brief note of it on paper and delay worrying about it until the next day when you are fresh and it will be easier to resolve.

A. Make relaxation your goal, not sleep.

B. Put off worries and troubles.

C. Use a flashlight to go to the bathroom at night.

D. In fact, a good sleeper won?t even remember it.

E. Also avoid screens of any kind-computers, TVs, cell phones, iPads.

F. You?ll be much more productive and creative after a good night?s rest.

G. A good way to stay out of your head is to focus on the feeling in your body.

Despite differences m decoration and price, one thing most hotels have in common is a set of rules. Failure to obey these rules can result in fees or fines to cover hotel room damages, removal from the hotel or possibly even arrest. Smoking Some hotels are completely non-smoking. Some hotels designate smoking and non-smoking rooms. If you smoke in a non-smoking room, you will likely be fined hundreds of dollars and possibly asked to leave. Number of Guests Most regular hotel rooms are designed for two adults. If you have more than two people staying in the room, the hotel will likely charge an additional fee for each extra guest, though some hotels let children stay free. Do not put more than four adults in the room unless the hotels policy permits that many people. Or you might be fined or removed from the hotel Hotel Reservations Requirements Most hotels require a major credit card to reserve the room. You can pay cash at the end of your stay, but do not be surprised if there is a temporary charge on your card for a few days after your stay. Most hotels authorize a security deposit on your card to cover any possible damages to the room. Once the hotel confirms that the room is undamaged and that you do not break any hotel policies, your security deposit will be refunded. Breaking the Law You cannot break the law in your hotel room, just as you cannot break the law in your own home or in public. Do not do drugs or commit any other criminal act in the hotel room. If you do, you will likely be arrested. Noise Most hotels have a noise policy you must obey. If you are being too loud you will usually get a warning. If the noise continues and more complaints are issued, you will likely be kicked out of the hotel, regardless of what time it is. 21. What is the main purpose of this passage?
