Bob Dylan could hardly have imagined that he would get this kind of special praise for his long career as a musician and songwriter.

The Nobel Prize for Literature from the Swedish Academy on October 13 is the most recent achievement of Dylan, who has long been among the cultural masters of the modern age. He has “created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”, according to the academy.

Although Dylan, 75, is not really seen as a literary(文学的)writer, he has given the world over 50 years of creative output. In his 1985 album Biography, Dylan wrote about the attraction of folk music to him. Rock songs “weren’t serious enough or didn’t reflect life in a realistic way”, he explained. Folk m usic, pared with rock music, was a more serious type of thing. The songs were filled with more sadness, more joy, more faith in the supernatural and much deeper feelings.

Dylan’s music and lyrics(歌词)did speak to a generation of people during the 1960s. His lyrics often spoke about great political causes, such as the civil rights movement or the campaign against the war in Vietnam. The 1960s were a time of change, a time when the young were demanding that their voices be heard.

Some people were puzzled that a literary prize had been handed to a singer. But poetry and song have long been found together. Greek poet Homer would have sung the poem The Iliad. In the Middle Ages, wandering minstrels(吟游诗人)performed their poems to music just like Dylan does.

Far from just being a fashionable move, giving the prize to Dylan can be seen as bringing back an old literary tradition. The millions whose lives Dylan’s songs have made better will

surely wele the award.

21. Dylan was given the Nobel Prize because __________.

A. he created many literary works

B. he performed his poems to music

C. he wrote his lyrics in a poetic way

D. he was one of the cultural masters

22. From the passage, we can learn that ________.

A. Dylan’s songs have great influences on politics.

B. Not everyone favors Dylan’s winning the prize.

C. It is only a fashionable move to offer Dylan the prize.

D. Songs and poems did not e together until recently.

23. What will be the best title for the passage?

A. The Popularity of Folk Music

B. A Famous Musician, Bob Dylan

C. A Surprising Nobel Prize for Literature

The world’s nights are getting brighter and brighter as light pollution invades darkness almost everywhere. Researchers found that Earth's artificially lit outdoor area grew by 2% a year from 2018 to 2018. So did night time brightness. Light pollution was even worse than that, according to the German-led team, because the light sensor(感应器)cannot recognize some of the LED lighting that is being more widespread, specifically blue light.

“Honestly, I had hoped that with LEDs we were improving the situation. But it turns out quite disappointing.” said Kyba, the lead author of the s tudy.

“Asia, Africa and South America, for the most part, saw an increase in artificial night lighting. More and more places are fixing outdoor lighting, due to its low cost and the growth in munities’ wealth,” the scientists said.

The biological effect from the increasing man-made light is obvious, according to the researchers. People’s sleep can be damaged, which in turn can affect their health. The living behavior of birds, fish, insects and bats can be interrupted. And forget about seeing stars or the Milky Way if the pollution continues.

“Many people are using light at night without really thinking about the cost,” said Franz Holker, one of the co-authors. “Not just the economic cost, but also the cost that you have

to pay for environmental damage.”

24. Why is the night being increasingly brighter?

A. Artificial light is used in larger areas.

B. The light sensors fail to work properly.

C. LED lighting gives off too much blue light.

D. More families afford to use lighting at home.

25. The brighter nights will bring about ________.

A. a more balanced sleeping schedule

B. reduced cost of lighting during the night

C. a better view of stars and the Milky Way

D. harmful biological effects on some animals

26. Where is this passage probably taken from?

A. A tourist guide.

B. A science magazine.

C. A biology textbook.

D. A medical report.

C

The letter arrived as I was dressing for dinner in my room on the evening of 23rd September 1902.

London was deserted at that time of the summer, and I had bee very bored and depressed with my daily routine of work at the Foreign Office. All my friends were away enjoying themselves at country house parties, but here was I who was forced to remain in London because of my job.

I had encouraged my friends to believe that the Foreign Office could not manage without me during the summer, but the truth was that my work was neither interesting nor important, mainly taking messages for absent officials, whose holiday plans had destroyed mine.

Although my friends had sent me letters to show pity, it was clear that I had not been greatly missed, and now, at the end of September, I realized another bitter truth. Two more days, and I would be free to start my holiday, but I had nowhere to go! The country house parties were all breaking up, and though I could always go home, which fashionable young man wants to spend his holiday with his own family?

So, when a letter, with a German stamp, arrived that evening, I felt a touch of interest, even excitement. I opened it and read:

Dear Carruthers,

You will probably be surprised to hear from me, as it’s a long time since we met. But I write in the hope that you might like to e here and join me in a little sailing and perhaps,

duck shooting. This part of the Baltic is very beautiful and there should be plenty of ducks soon, if it gets cold enough. The friend who was with me has had to leave, and I really need someone else, as I’d like to stay out here for a while. I know you speak German perfectly, and that will be a great help.

Yours ever,

Arthur Davies

His letter seemed rather unpromising. His friend had left him—why? The Baltic was beautiful—yes, but what about October storms? Did I really want to spend my holiday freezing

in the Baltic, with a man who I didn’t know well? The letter was a turning point in my life, though I did not know it at the time.

27. How did the writer feel about his ing holiday?

A. Depressed.

B. Delighted.

C. Interested.

D. Hopeful.

28. What did Arthur Davies ask the writer to do in the letter?

A. Sail in the Baltic Sea.

B. Take care of his work.

C. Help him with German.

D. Join him in duck watching.

29. Which of the following statements is true?

A. The letter arrived when the writer was having dinner.

B. The writer accepted the invitation without any hesitation.

C. The letter was to make a great difference to the writer's life.

D. The writer felt honored to take messages for absent officials.

30. The underlined word “unpromising” in the last paragraph can be replaced by ________.

A. pleasant

B. uninteresting

C. amusing

D. doubtful

Wilber: The whole thing wasn’t easy at first. But Jasmine helped a lot. And she was really good at making people happy to donate (捐赠) money for the roof garden.

David: My kids love going up there. They sit there watching butterflies and b irds. The roof garden brings them closer to nature.

Samuel: You want something green? Visit the park! It’s only one block away! After the roof garden was built, sm all insects started flying into my room! And the kids leave mud on the stairs when they e down from the roof!

When you need to see a doctor, surely you will want to see a good one. But there is one important thing you may never have thought about: Has your doctor rested enough?

Doctors in our country often have to work 34 hours or longer without sleep. Most of them work 104 hours a week, and some even 150. (There are only 168 hours a week!) One report said that a doctor who works such long hours cannot think more clearly than a drunk driver. Another found that doctors who sleep 5.8 fewer hours than the week before might make 22% more serious mistakes. Surely no one wants to get in a car that is driven by a drunk driver. So, how safe would you feel when you are under the care of a tired doctor?

Sadly this problem has been around for a long time. There are no laws about it yet and hospital bosses don’t look like they care either. And that is why we doctors are asking you to join us on the street this Sunday. Fight together with us on the street so we can fight better for your life in the hospital.

Time: 1 p. m. July 15 Place: City Hospital Square

4. How long do doctors often have to work per week in the country?

A. 34 hours.

C. To show who can work longer without sleep.

D. To give the reader a clear idea of the danger.

7. What is the purpose of the text?

A. To warn doctors not to work too long.

B. To get support for the fight for doctors.

C. To tell people how to find a good doctor.

D. To call for a law against drunk driving. C

Imagine the tallest building in the United States. Fill that giant building 44 times with rotten fruits and vegetables. Now you know how much food Americans waste every year.

It is hard to believe, right? About 133 billion pounds of food get thrown away. That’s one-third of all the food we produce. And a lot of it is thrown away for one simple reason: It’s

ugly.

The problem is that nature isn’t perfect. Apples can get scarred (留下疤痕) by storms. Cucumbers grow in C shapes. Carrots change into unusual fork-like forms. Watermelons get too big to fit on a refrigerator shelf. These crazy-looking fruits and vegetables may taste great. But most grocery stores refuse to sell them. Store owners say people judge food by how it looks. No one wants a tomato that looks like a tw o-headed monster. But what if you could buy that tomato for half-price?

A new movement is trying to make people see the “beauty” in ugly food. Some stores are selling ugly produce. It taste s the same. And you pay less for it because the food doesn’t look perfect.

Usually, the stores find a nicer word than “ugly”. A Canadian chain uses “naturally imperfect”. In some US stores, it’s “misfit produce”. Whatever you call it, ugly food helps many people. Farmers get paid for food they were going to have to throw away. Shoppers get cheaper fruits and vegetables. The ugly-food movement will also help some of the 44 million Americans who don’t have enough to eat. Many groups give the ugly produce to h ungry people.

So really, who cares if that carrot looks a little… ugly?

8. Why are lots of fruits and vegetables thrown away in the US?

A. Because they don’t look nice.

B. Because they have gone bad.

C. Because they don’t taste good.

D. Because they are badly polluted.

9. What is the 5th paragraph mainly about?

A. The stores selling ugly food.

B. The better names for ugly food.

C. The number of hungry Americans.

D. The benefits of the ugly-food movement.

10. What does the mark “…” in the last paragraph suggest?

A. The author would like to buy ugly carrots.

B. No one would care if a carrot looks a little ugly.

C. The author does not quite like the word “ugly”.

D. Nobody really wants to buy carrots that look ugly.

D

Feet help us walk, run, dance, and jump. The words feet and foot are also used in everyday speech.

To be under someone’s feet means to be troublesome. In other words, you are standing too close to someone and are getting in their way. Some adults criticize (批评) children for being under foot.

Speaking of children, if someone says their home will soon have the pitter-patter of tiny feet, it means the family is expecting a baby!

Now, people who are active do not let grass grow under their feet. They are never in one place for very long. People who can think and take action at the same time are said to be able to think on their feet.

Some people appear to have it all. They have money, a good education, good looks, a great family and a large circle of friends. You could say they have the world at their feet. This means whatever they want seems to be there for them.

People who have both feet firmly on the ground are realistic and practical. They are not dreamy. You might say such a person is well grounded. If you are a bad dancer, you might be described as having two left feet. To dance well, it is better to have a right foot and a left foot.

Sam loves skiing. He thinks that it would be fun to own a ski resort (滑雪场) high in the mountains. But he knows nothing about running a business. So, he decides to get his feet wet. In other words, he wants to get used to a new situation.

He joins an organization for resort owners and attends their meetings. He travels to ski areas all over the United States. This helps Sam get his foot in the door. Having a foot in the door is a starting point. This expression es from people selling things door-to-door. They would block the door with their foot so people couldn’t close the door on them.

11. What would you say to someone who is “under your feet”?

A. Oh, I’m terri bly sorry.

B. Take off your feet!

C. Sorry for the trouble.

D. Excuse me, you are in the way.

12. Which of the following describes people who keep moving about?

A. They are always under foot.

B. They can think on their feet.

C. They have the pitter-patter of tiny feet.

D. They never let grass grow under their feet.

13. What should you try to avoid if you want to succeed in doing something?

A. Having two left feet.

B. Getting your feet wet.

C. Getting your foot in the door.

D. Having both feet firmly on the ground.

14. What do we know about Sam’s new business?

A. It’s a big success.

B. It’s not started yet.

C. It lies high in the mountains.

D. It opens only in winter.

15. What may be the best title for the passage?

A. Use your feet properly.

B. Feet help us walk and run.

C. How to be a good dancer.

D. Ready for a new business.

Social Media

Social media can be defined (解释) as web-based and mobile media that are used for people to interact, connect and municate with each other. It often involves the creation and sharing of content (writing, pictures, and video) that people make themselves, mostly through the Internet.

16 The first type involves people getting together to work on a project, for example, Wikipedia. Blogs and micro-blogs (such as Twitter) are another type of social media. There are other websites like YouTube that allow people to share content such as pictures, articles or videos. 17 These sites allow people to stay in touch with friends, make new ones and join munities. Social media are different from traditional media. With social media, many individual people in different places create content.

Another difference is that people who produce content in social media don’t need very special skills. 19 It takes only a few minutes to write a twitter post, for example.

20 But whatever you might think, social media is here to stay.

A. World of Warcraft is a good example.

B. And social media content can be produced much faster.

C. In general, there a re six different types of social media.

D. Another type of social media are social networking sites.

E. Some people think social media is good and some think it is bad.

F. In traditional media, people need special skills to produce something.

G. Social media is one of the fastest-growing industries in today’s world.

Making a film takes a long time and is very hard work. Writing the story for the film may take many weeks. Shooting (拍摄) the film often takes at least six months. Actors and camera men work from very early in the morning until late at night. Each scene has to be acted and re-acted, filmed and re-filmed, until it is just fine. Sometimes the same scene has to be acted many times.

The film studio is like a large factory, and the indoor stages are very big indeed. Scenery of all kinds is made in the studio. Churches, houses, and forests are all built of wood and cardboard. Several hundred people work together to make one film. Some of these people are the actors and actresses. The director of the film, however, is the most important person in a film studio. He decides how the scenes should be filmed and how the actors should act.

Most people go to see a film because they know the film stars are in it. Sometimes the film may be very poor. It is best to choose a film made by a good director. Some famous directors make their films very real; people feel that they themselves are among the people in the films.
