Maybe you know floods, droughts, earthquakes , sandstorms amd so on. But have you ever heard of typhoons?

Typhoons are some of the worst storms, usually around the Pacific ocean and the South China Sea. Most happen in July , August and September.

How does a typhoon happen? When lots of sea water gets hot in the summer sun, it evaporates (蒸发) into the air. This makes the air hotter. When the air gets warm enough, it starts to move higher up into the sky. Then , cooler air around it rushes in. It fills the space that is left. After the air gets warmer, it starts to move quickly, making wind. The wind goes in circles(圆圈), and it keeps moving higher in the sky. The warmer the air gets, the quicker the wind moves. And when the wind moves faster than 30 metres a second, a typhoon begins.

A typhoon has two parts. One is called the “eye” . In the eye, the wind does

not move so fast. The other part is the wall of clouds around the eye. This is where is the strongest wind and hardest rains are.

Have you ever dreamt of winning the lottery (彩票)?Most people will dream of fast cars, large houses, and not having to work any more. In real life, however, that’s not always what happens.

Dr H Van Haan, a writer of several books on lottery winners, says, “Winning the lottery doesn’t change people’s lives as much as we imagine.” Most lottery winners keep their jobs, but often find that they lose their friends. Their friends will often ask them fo r money and these “friends” very often get angry if they don’t share the money.

Lottery winners spend most of their first one million dollars on travelling. However, when the early excitement of travelling around the world has disappeared, the happiness that the money brings also disappears. In less than a year after winning, most winners say that they are not happier than before.

Too much money can make people unhappy, especially for those who are not used to it. One study shows that more than 30% of lottery winners lost most of their money in the first five years and many of them had money problems. Another report shows that a lot of people were happily married before they won the lottery, but they had problems with their partners after winning the money.

So, you see, although most people dream of winning the lottery, the dream can sometimes turn into a nightmare.

八年级英语阅读竞赛试卷 Name:__________ Class:___________ A Sociologists(社会学家), working in western countries, have found that a large number of women wished they had been born men. The number is said to be as high as 60% in Germany. “Women often wish they had the same chances as men have, and think it is still men’s world.” Said Dr. James Helen, one of the sociologists who did the study. Many men say that they have more duties than women. A man has to make money to support(养活) his family and to make the important decision, so it is right for men to be paid more. Some are even against their wives working at all. When wives go out to work, they say, the home and children cannot be taken good care of. If women take full-time jobs, they won’t be able to do what they are best at doing: making a nice home and bringing up the children. Some women disagree. They say they want to get out of their homes and to have freedom to choose between work and home life. Women have the right of equal pay and equal chances. Anne Harper has a very good job. She also believes in “Women’s Liberation”. “I don’t wish I were a man,” she says, “and I don’t think many women do. But I do wish people would stop treating us like second-class people. At work, for example, we usually do the work that men do but get paid less. There are still a lot of jobs only to men usually they are the best ones. 高考英语阅读理解试题经典及解析

高考英语阅读理解试题经典及解析 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 When times get tough, we all look for ways to cut back. When we're hungry, we eat at home instead of going out. We take buses instead of taxis. And we wear our old designer jeans just a few months longer. With college expenses at all-time highs, high school students are eager to do anything to cut the cost of a university education. One cost-cutting proposal is to allow college students to get a bachelor's degree in three years instead of four. Educational institutions have been actively exploring ways to make the learning process more efficient. But there's a question: Would the quality of undergraduate education suffer? Few US universities have formally approved a "three-year degree" model. I doubt that mainstream North American colleges will carry out a three-year curriculum any time soon. For one thing, most universities already allow highly qualified students to graduate early by testing out of certain classes and obtaining a number of college credits. In addition, at famous universities, the committee who determine which courses are required and which courses are electives are unlikely to suddenly "throw out" one quarter of the required credits. Professors will resist "diluting (稀释)" the quality of the education they offer. In my opinion, a quality four-year education is always superior to a quality three-year education. A college education requires sufficient time for a student to become skilled in their major and do coursework in fields outside their major. It is not a good idea to water down education, any more than it's not a good idea to water down medicine. If we want to help students find their way through university, we should help them understand early on what knowledge and skills they need to have upon graduation. We should allow students to test out of as many courses as possible. We should give them a chance to earn money as interns (实习生) in meaningful part-time jobs that relate to their university studies, such as the five-year co-op program at Northeastern University. (1)Which of the following can best sum up the main idea? A.It's time to shorten the learning process. B.Best learning takes place over time. C.University education should be watered down. D.College education calls for reform. (2)We can learn from the passage that ________. A.most American universities are against the "three-year degree" model B.many famous US universities are considering adopting the "three-year degree" model C.professors are willing to accept the "three-year degree" model D.The "three-year degree" model can make college learning more efficient (3)In most US universities, ________. A.college students are offered the co-op program B.electives' credits make up one quarter of the required credits C.all students are required to finish four-year education before graduation D.some excellent students can graduate ahead of time

The popular destinations are America, Britain, Australia, Japan and Canada. Chinese children hope a lot to go abroad to get a wider view of the world. However, life in foreign countries is a big challenge for them, because they will meet a culture shock and language problems. Amy Lee, a 15-year-old student from Shenzhen, began to study in a senior high school in Vancouver, Canada, in January. To her surprise, her teachers there never force students to study. And there isn’t much homework. Because of the different education system, students there have more free time and more space for thinking. However, as Chinese students, we must spend our time and money properly, or we won’t have an easy time. For example, some of Amy’s Chinese friends spent their whole year’s money in the first three months of the term. What’s worse, they didn’t pass their exams. Without doubt, studying abroad at a young age can help students learn foreign languages quickly and it can enrich their minds, but they should also know about the challenges. ‘Make sure that you are well prepared if you decide to study abroad,’Amy said. In fact, everyone has the power to change their living habits to help reduce it. Many local governments call on their people to take action to make the air cleaner. Transport is one of the biggest contributors(促成物)to haze. When, where, how, why and what you drive all affect air quality. When one drives to work for one year,he uses as mush energy as a bus rider uses in 10 years. So walk or ride your bicycle to work or school whenever possible. If it is necessary, you can use public transport instead of your car. Each person using public transport for a year instead of a car can save nearly a ton of pollutants, including CO2,from going into the atmosphere. Carpooling is another way to reduce carbon emissions(排放).Carpooling is the sharing of car journeys so that more than one person travels in a car. It immediately reduces your car’s emissions by half. What you do inside your living space can have a big effect on the air quality outside it. You can do a lot of things inside and around your home that will help you pollute less and save some money.
