C

Have you ever spent an afternoon in the backyard, maybe grilling or enjoying a basketball game, when suddenly you notice that everything goes quiet? There is an old phrase“calm before the storm”,often used in a situation---a quiet period just before a great activity or excitement. According to our own experience,we know there is actually calm before the storm. But what causes this calm? And is it always calm before the storm?

A period of calm happens in a particular kind of storm, the simplest kind of storm---a single-cell thunderstorm. In this type of thunderstorm, there is usually only one main stream of current, which is warm, damp air and drawn from places near the ground.Storms need warm and damp air as fuel,so they typically draw that air in from surrounding environment.Storms can draw in the air that fit their need from all directions—even from the direction in which the storm is traveling.

As the warm, damp air is pulled into a storm system,it leaves a low-pressure vacuum(真空) coming after. The rising air meets the cold dry air that has already existed in the storm clouds, thus the temperature of the warm, damp air drops, and the water vapor in it changes into tiny drops that are a precondition of rain. These drops accumulate and build on larger particles(颗粒) like dust, until they grow large enough to form raindrops.

This warm, damp air keeps moving upwards, but it becomes cooler and drier during its trip

through cloud. When it reaches the top of the cloud, the air is squeezed out at the top. This air is sent rolling out over the big thunderclouds. From there, the air goes down.Warm and dry air is relatively stable, and once it covers a region, that air,in turn, causes the calm before a storm.

Most thunderstorms, though, don't start with calm. That's because most are actually groups of storms with complex wind patterns. There's so much air moving up and down storm groups that the calm before the storm never happens.Instead, before the storm,it might be really windy!

28.Which best fits the description of a particular kind of storm?

A.A thunderstorm with a single shape.

B.A thunderstorm without strong winds.

C.A storm with air drawn from every direction.

D.A storm fueled by moving air from the ground.

29.What does the underlined word“it”in Paragraph3refer to?

A.Warm and wet air.

B.Warm and dry air.

C.Cold and wet air.

D.Cold and dry air.

30.Which does the writer most likely agree to?

A.Presence of the calm relies on stable air.

B.All thunderstorms don’t start with the calm.

C.The drier the air is,the bigger the storm will be.

D.Storm happens without air moving up and down.

31.What is the passage mainly about?

A.A brief introduction of a peaceful storm.

B.A personal experience of a heavy storm.

C.An explanation of the calm before a storm.

D.An analysis of causes and effects of a storm.

As the international demand for narrative(叙事的)film/TV content continues to increase with

popular streaming services like Netflix and others the two questions then come:will the coming generations receive most of their entertainment through visual means rather than through the written word and will such an increase of narrative film/TV reduce the importance of reading?

Growing examples of this trend include the diminishment(减少)of fiction in the common core(核心的)curriculum, the ever-rising culture of computer games, the wave of streaming services of wide international reach, and movies filled with special effects made for children and teenagers.Nor must we ignore the economic dangers that lie ahead for the written word. The narrative film industry is a moneymaker that dwarfs(使相形见绌)the publishing industry.

The other underlying question,of course,is“does it really matter if the written word bows to the world of film/TV?”From my point of view, any diminishment of fiction delivered by words is a loss for mankind.

There is no greater human feature than the imagination. It lies at the very soul of the human species. It is the brain’s most powerful engine. It is the essential muscle of life and like all muscles it must be exercised and strengthened.

Writing and reading are the principal tools that inspire, create and empower our imagination.Anything that diminishes that power is the enemy of mankind.

It should be known that I am not opposed to new media and technological advances. Instead,I have always felt it necessary to adapt to advancing technology. In fact,a number of my novels are in various stages of development for film,TV,and live stage productions. My hope is that the written word will only stand to be complemented(补充)by its visual counterparts(对应物),not pushed to the edge of extinction.

Of course, there are those who will present arguments for the superiority of the moving image over the written word. Each has its place. My argument is for finding the right balance between it and the moving image.

32.In what way does narrative film/TV embarrass the written word?

A.Economic benefits

B.International reach

C.Cultural influence

https://www.360docs.net/doc/1412920217.html,cational importance

33.Why does the author value the role of the written word?

C.It distinguishes man from each other.

D.It paves the way for narrative film/TV.

34.What is the author’s attitude towards technology?

A.Cautious

When I was about5years old,I experienced my very first random act of kindness.I was sitting at the roadside one evening, crying alone for some reason when suddenly,a boy came up to me and gave me a plastic rose,I remember the moment when I took the rose from his hand;I was smiling from ear to ear, whispering“I want to be like him”to myself as I watched him walking away.

From then on,I made it as my life mission to do random acts of kindness whenever I can.I was very determined to make other people smile. That was the only reason why I joined my

school’s Red Crescent Society and became a volunteer.Unfortunately, not everyone thinks in the same way as I did.Whenever I do something nice to others, people around me will start to judge my actions.Often I will just keep quiet and ignore what they say,but every once in a while, they do drive me up the wall.

These people like to complain about how humans nowadays are lacking of humanities and compassion. However, when they actually see somebody doing a good deed in front of them, they start to question and criticize that person’s honesty.Perhaps it is the increasing crime rate and the never-ending rat race that caused them to be so suspicious to nice strangers. In other words, people nowadays have lost sight of the real meaning of kindness and just let it go unnoticed. That is why I think random acts of kindness are really important. These selfless acts are not only capable of bringing joy to the receivers but also to the givers.Because of this,I want to help spread the idea of these random acts to the whole world.I want to show the people how the little things they give could make a big difference in someone else’s life.

The Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)is gaining global popularity.According to a government white paper,TCM has been introduced in183countries and regions around the

world.

Westerners’understanding of TCM,however, may be limited to acupuncture, cupping and massage(针灸、拔罐和按摩).For instance, the purple,injury-like marks left on U.S.swimmer Michael Phelps’back from cupping for the purpose of relaxing his muscles and reducing pain became the center of attention during the Rio Olympics in2016.

As a matter of fact,Chinese herbs play a more important role in getting rid of diseases and keeping the body in good condition in the TCM treatment system than physical treatment. It is therefore disheartening to know that while103WHO member countries have given approval to the practice of acupuncture, not many recognize Chinese herbal medicine.TCM falls far behind Western medicine owing partly to the slow development of Chinese herbs.

Herbs are made into pills, powder and soup, and the kind of herbs used, their quality and quantity, and the processing of the ingredients(原材料)jointly determine the effectiveness of the https://www.360docs.net/doc/1412920217.html,pared with Western medicine, which has standardized drug production processes and treatment methods,TCM lacks standardization, with the chemical composition and functions of its medicines being unclear and their effects being unstable.Fortunately, standardization has improved in recent decades, with an increasing number of factories producing patented TCM drugs.

Another factor that has prevented the development of TCM prescription drugs is the lack of creativity. While Western medicine-making companies come up with new products every year, TCM drug producers tend to make medicines according to prescription handed down from the past.Chinese chemist Tu Youyou’s winning the2015Nobel Prize in Physiology or medicine for her research into malaria(疟疾)treatment may drive creativity to some extent in China’s TCM industry. However, the current state of affairs cannot be changed within a short time.

28.Why does the author mention the example of Michael Phelps?

A.Because he was injured in his swimming.

B.Because cupping is a kind of important TCM treatment.

C.Because westerners know a little about TCM.

D.Because westerners attached great importance to TCM.

29.Why don’t some member countries of WHO recognize Chinese herbal medicine?

A.Because Chinese herbs can get rid of diseases.

B.Because they only approve the practice of acupuncture.

C.Because Western medicine is more effective.

D.Because medicine made out of Chinese herbs develops slowly.

https://www.360docs.net/doc/1412920217.html,pared with Western medicine, what is the weak point of TCM in Paragraph4?

A.The methods of planting herbs.

B.The effectiveness of prescription.

https://www.360docs.net/doc/1412920217.html,cking in standardization.

D.Its stable functions.

31.The lack of creativity in TCM refers to the fact that________.

A.Medicine-making companies lack creativity

B.Prescriptions are got from the past

C.Western companies are more experienced

D.Medicine-making companies lack driving force

An exciting landing process of Chang’e-4lunar probe(月球探测器)was seen through the monitor at Beijing Aerospace Control Center in Beijing,Jan.3,2019.It touched down on the far side of the moon at10:26a.m.Beijing Time, becoming the first spacecraft soft-landing on the moon’s unknown side never visible from Earth.

China’s Chang’e-4probe has started the exploration on the far side of the moon thanks to the relay satellite that provides a communication link with ground control. The relay satellite, named Queqiao, meaning Magpie Bridge, after a Chinese legend, was launched on May21,2018, and became the first communication satellite operating in the halo orbit,nearly500,000km from

the earth. It can also provide communication for probes from other countries. The relay satellite will also be used for scientific and technological experiments. The maximum distance between the satellite and the Chang’e-4probe on the far side of the moon is79,000km.The satellite processes data from the probe and sends it to Earth.

The satellite can stay in its orbit for a long time due to its relatively low fuel consumption, as the earth’s and moon’s gravity balances its orbital moving. While in orbit,it can see both the earth and the far side of the moon.

The concept of using a relay satellite in the halo orbit was first put forward by U.S.space experts in the1960s,but was realized by Chinese space engineers.

Researchers hope to use the cameras on the satellite to record asteroids(小行星)hitting the far side of the moon.To control the cost of the Chang’e-4probe,the relay satellite was designed to be relatively small, weighing about400kg.

Researchers had just30months to develop the satellite, putting them under high pressure. To promote public interest in space exploration, the China National Space Administration invited people to write down their wishes for lunar and space exploration, and the relay satellite carries the names of tens of thousands of participants and their messages.

32.What do we learn from the second paragraph?

A.The relay satellite was launched on Jan.3,2019.

B.Chang’e-4probe was the first communication satellite.

C.The relay satellite only explores the far side of the moon.

D.The relay satellite can handle data from Chang’e-4probe.

33.Why was the size of the relay satellite relatively small?

A.To reduce the cost as much as possible.

B.To make it circle Moon for a longer time.

C.To avoid being crashed by other satellites.

D.To follow American space experts’advice.

34.What made researchers suffer from great stress?

A.Few people interested in the exploration on the moon.

B.The relay satellite carrying too much equipment.

C.Their lacking enough time to develop the relay satellite.

D.People’s never being optimistic about the relay satellite

35.What is the main idea of the text?

A.China is a new space power after the USA.

B.Change-4probe lands on Moon’s far side.

C.Chinese space engineers make much progress.

D.Space exploration is a dangerous challenge.

The world is a greener place than it was20years ago.Recent IN ASA satellite data(2000?2017)have shown that human activities in China and India dominate this greening of the planet, thanks to ambitious tree-planting programs in China and intensive agriculture(集约农业)in both countries.

The researchers from Boston University found that global green leaf area has increased by5 percent in the new century,an area equal to all of the Amazon rainforest.China alone accounts for 25%of the global net increase in leaf area with only6.6%of global vegetated area.China’s contribution comes in large part from its programs to conserve and expand forests, taking up about 42percent of the greening. The greening from croplands in China is about32%,but that in India is about82%.

Rama Nemani,a research scientist at NASA's Ames Research Center and a co-author of the study said,“When the greening of the Earth was first observed,we thought it was due to a

warmer, wetter climate and fer-lilization(施肥)from the added carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. But with data from NASA satellites, scientists realized that humans are also contributing, which was all against our expectations.

Nemani sees a positive message in the new findings.“Once people realize there is a problem, they tend to fix it,”he said.“In the1970s and80s in India and China, the situation around vegetation loss was not good.In the1990s,people realized U,and today things have improved. Humans are incredibly resilient.That1s what we see in the satellite data.

However, the researchers rang bells as well. They said that the gain in global greenness did not netessari-ly compensate for the loss of natural vegetation in regions like Brazil and Indonesia.

(A ) A coal-fire stove(炉灶)provided heating for Zhao Yaoqin's courtyard bungalow in a Beijing hutong all her life. This winter, however, the stove has disappeared from the 66-year-old's life, and an electric radiator takes its place beside her bed, a product of a government to use clean energy in the national capital. With the Olympics to be staged in Beijing next August, the city is determined to eliminate the use of coal within the Third Ring Road that circles the city before the Games. The project to replace the stoves with electric radiators has been part of the effort. When the city's four-month long heating season started on Thursday, coal-fired stoves, known as a big source of pollution in the big city, have disappeared from some 20,000 local households like Zhao's bungalow in the inner city "hutong" -- traditional alleyways(小巷) that date back centuries. "We used to boil water or bake bread on the stove," said Zhao, sounding sentimental(伤感) to the disappearance of the coal furnace from her life. Late in the 1990s, Beijing's air quality monitoring office found that the emissions(排放) of sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide from the hutong areas have been higher than the city's average in winter, mainly because of the coal stoves. With the project to switch to clean energy for heating launched in 1999, the emission level of the two poisonous substances decreased by 42 percent and 44 percent, respectively, this year from 2001 levels. Zhao said the fee for electrical heat for the entire winter was usually around 2,400 yuan (US$323) per household. With the government's subsidy(补贴), however, she only needed to pay about 500 yuan, nearly the same price as that for coal. 1.Zhao Yaoqin’ example in the passage is to tell us that_______. A.people in Beijing using electric radiators to welcome the Olympics. B.people in Beijing are doing something to protect the environment. C.hutongs in Beijing have a long history. D.People pay more money to use electric radiators than before. 2. The underlined word eliminate probably means________ A. cut down. B. increase. C. get rid of. D. replace 3. We can infer from the passage that ______ A. Zhao Yaoqin has a strong and deep emotion with the use of coal-fire stove. B. The government will pay most of the fee. C. The air of Beijing has been badly polluted since 1990s. D. The people do not use coal eight months in one year. 4. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? A. The clean air is important when the Olympics Games is held in Beijing. B. The success of the Olympics Games depends on the clean air. C. The government spare no effort to make the environment better. D. The emission level of poisonous substances will be low in 2008.

The setting was a packed gymnasium just before the start of a game against another school. There were five girls who were members of the Danville High School basketball team—all of them starters. They were not in uniform to play that night and would not be on the team for the rest of this season. They were there to admit their breaking of team rules. They were there to support their coach's decision to take them off the team. They were there to let the town know there was a problem in their little community that needed to be addressed. And they did it with sincere regret rather than defensiveness. While the school had been out for the New Year's holiday, the five girls had gone to the party with several of their friends. There was alcohol there. And they all drank some. Coach Rainville has a zero tolerance rule on drugs and alcohol for her members though it was a hard decision to make. When classes resumed and accounts of holiday parties were shared, rumors about the five girls began closing in on them. The coach said she couldn't back down on her rules. And the players—two junior students and three senior students—agreed. That night in the gym was part of their public support of the coach's decision. “We hope you will understand that we are not bad kids. What we did was definitely not worth it. We hope this event will make everyone realize that there is a big drug and alcohol problem in our community,” one of the senior students said, “And if you work with us to try to solve this problem, you will help us feel that we have not been thrown off our basketball team for nothing.” The five left the floor to deafening applause. The team may not win another game this year. But they've learnt something about personal responsibility, the effect of one's action on others, and honesty that will serve them well throughout life. (1)It can be inferred from the passage that the five girls who were kicked off the team were ________. A. very good players on the team B. addicted to alcohol and drugs C. three junior students and two senior students D. scolded by their parents for drinking alcohol (2)What did the girls do to support their coach's decision? A. They didn't fight for Danville High School any more. B. They all gave speeches to apologize in the local press. C. They admitted their mistake in public in the gymnasium. D. They would never drink any alcohol throughout their life. (3)Which word best describes the coach Rainville? A. Indifferent. B. Strict. C. Stubborn. D. Cruel. (4)Which would be the best title for the passage? A. Growing up with pain B. A bad mistake C. Team rules are everything D. Basketball girls in high school 【答案】(1)A

I watched from a distance as the homeless man quarreled with those who did not leave money for him – the majority. I walked up to him and right on queue he asked me for a quarter. “I’ll give you a quarter if you tell me your story.” He laughed, “You’ll give me a quarter for my story?” I lay the qu front of him and corrected myself –“Nah, here’s the quarter but it would be nice to hear your story.” I followed his eyes to the quarter and for a brief moment I saw a glimmer of reflection. I sat down next to him and waited. I was a sniper(狙击手)and was supposed to shoot down the “I was in the army,” he said. “ carefully to his grizzly voice as he went deeper into the story. enemy from the distance.” I listened He wore dirty old torn clothes and smelled like a dead rat left in a mouse trap. He told me how he used to hunt with his family and was really good at it. He had his own way of respecting animals by not wasting what he killed for food and not killing more than he needed. When the army came knocking on his door, he felt pride and joined up. All those years of polishing his hunting skills could now serve a larger purpose—to defend us from the bad guys. He set out to fight in Iraq. It wasn’t long before he realized his ideals and expectations were just a shadow of the truth. He became disillusioned with the killings, which he felt were of innocent people. “I was a sniper but I never really killed anyone,” he said. “One day I had to do it. They asked me to shoot this lady from the distance. I saw kids near that lady and my hands were on the trigger (扳机). Man, I was tearing up ... I couldn’t do it. She wasn’t doing anything to anyone and she was with the kids—I couldn’t see through my tears. It just didn’t make any sense to me.” The story goes on as he describes eventually being put into prison for 180 days for refusing to follow orders. He told me how he was black listed so that he couldn’t get a job. All the rights we take for granted were taken away from him. Why? Here was a man who was being punished—and for what? For refusing to kill the lady? For being a hero? “I have no regrets,” anyone the homeless man said. “I may be homeless now, but I never killed that lady. I never killed He in the army. It didn’t feel right. I didn’t go there to do that. I went there to save people.” okay. But I wouldn’t be able to live with continued, “I can live with being homeless—that’s killing innocent people.” On that lonely Friday night, I met a hero. () A. never killed animals B. had a strong respect for life C. deserved the punishment he received D. felt guilty about disobeying the order

The new garbage sorting regulation has taken effect in Shanghai starting July 1. Many citizens are still confused about the classification of the four different types of trash. Thankfully, authorities have released an official guideline to explain the new rules. The guideline, published by the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau, provides a rather clear definition on the four kinds if waste: recyclable waste, harmful waste, household food waste and residual (剩余) waste. A team from the U. K.'s National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine examined 14 lean and overweight men and analyzed their metabolic (新陈代谢) health. The participants were either assigned Harmful waste, as the name suggests, includes various poisonous materials like used batteries, light bulbs, out-of-date medicines, paint and pesticides. Household food waste —which is translated to "wet trash" in Chinese —refers to food leftovers, rotten food, pet food, fruit peels, remains of TCM herbs (中药) and flowers. Paper, plastic, glass, metal and textiles (纺织品) are counted as recyclable waste. The definition of residual waste is a little confusing. Anything that is not listed above belongs to this category. As specific as the new guideline is, residents still have a hard time sorting trash correctly and are finding it challenging to memorize them all. For instance, both plastic bottles and bubble tea or coffee cups are plastic materials. However, the former falls to the category of recyclable waste and the latter belongs to residual waste. To save the hassle, some netizens have come up with their own way to sort trash. "We should do this from a pig's angle," commented one netizen. "Those edible (可食用) for pigs are household food waste. Those even pigs don't want to eat are residual waste. If a pig consumes something and dies of it, then something must be harmful waste. Those that can be sold and the money we gain can be used to purchase pigs are recyclable waste." The new regulation came into effect on July 1. Those who do not sort their trash properly will be fined RMB200. (1)What do the old coats that you want to throw away belong to? A.Harmful waste. B.Wet trash. C.Recyclable waste. D.Residual waste (2)What is the common point of "wet trash"? A.They can be broken down easily. B.They all come from plants. C.They all have bad smells. D.They all have poisonous materials.
