I’d like to draw your attention to certain points about taking notes. First, remember that note-taking should be 75% listening and only 25% writing, so don’t try to write down every single word the teacher says. Ignore what is unimportant and write in phrases, not complete sentences. Second, leave spaces and lines between main ideas. You may want to add some information later. I find that some of you are very good at making use of color, mapping web, and symbols such as arrows, circles and boxes. I highly recommend these tools to all of you, because the use of them makes the outline more easily readable and interesting than the blocks of text. It also makes sure that important words stand out. Here are some examples.

We sat at home, waiting for the COVID-19 cases to decrease and for the weather to improve. We all dreamed of what we would do when we could finally go outside.

I rode my old bike faithfully for almost 20 years before getting the replacement, which got stolen forcing me back to Old Faithful. The weak-minded might have abandoned biking completely at that point, but not me. Biking means freedom.

Every spring I get Old Faithful ready. She is getting old, with more replacement parts than originals. But with all bike stores being low on new models, she is all I have. On my bike, as long as I’m alive and eating, I’ve got fuel and can pedal to the ends of Earth if I want. No obstacle is impassable. Jammed roads mean nothing. I can still weave between cars in traffic. This

memory of freedom means even more to me with the experience of lockdown.

Society gritted its teeth (咬紧牙关) in the knowledge that we just had to tough it out for a year to get to the other side. Then Delta hit. Then Omicron. A year turned into two, and that’s when the walls really started closing in. That’s when we really needed hope. So, I count the days until I can return to my bike. On my bike, I achieve another state of mind. I would push myself to reach the top each time. I wanted to feel that little thrill of making it to the summit, knowing that doing so told me once again that I could go anywhere and that nothing could hold me back. I was free.

Every few years I add a new ache or pain. I am starting to get old. I can’t cycle as fast as I used to. But every time I encounter a hill, I don’t give up. I’m waiting for that first warm day when I’ll escape the pandemic walls. I want to put on my helmet and for one brief, beautiful moment, be free again.

24.What caused the author to ride Old Faithful?

A.He had his bike stolen unluckily. B.He wanted to replace the old one. C.He hoped to go through his isolation. D.He wished to avoid its becoming dusty.

25.What does Paragraph 3 want to say?

A.The limitation of driving vehicles. B.The advantages of riding his bike. C.The hardship to find bike originals. D.The special experience of lockdown.

26.What does the underlined sentence “Society gritted ...” in Paragraph 4 mean? A.Keep something for a rainy day. B.Be a playboy without ambition. C.A good medicine tastes bitter. D.Holding on makes life hopeful. 27.What’s the main idea of the passage?

A.Tough situations make me stronger and smarter.

B.The pandemic lockdown can not lock my dreams away

C.What I want to do when the pandemic lockdown ends.

D.How I relieved my pressure during the pandemic lockdown.

Silent films set up America’s movie industry. But many of these films from the early 1900s no longer exist. A new project aims to represent the flavor of these movies by digitizing (数字化)old advertisements for them and publishing the materials online.

The idea for the project came from Chicago-based collector Dwight Cleveland, who was introduced to the silent movie advertisements, also called

lobby (大厅)cards, as a high school student in the 1970s. He then fell in love with the colors, designs and other elements used in the movie cards. That enjoyable experience made him want to start his own collection. “It just sort of screamed out, ‘Take me home!’“ Clevela nd said.

The cards were made to be placed inside the area outside theater entrances, also known as lobbies. The cards informed film-goers about what movies were currently playing as well as films that would arrive next. They advertised all that early Hollywood had to offer, including comedies, love stories and action movies.

About 90 percent of all silent films have been lost. One of the main reasons for this is that the chemicals used to make many of the early films broke down over time. ”What that means i s that these movie cards are the only proof that these films even existed, Cleveland said.

Cleveland has been sending examples from his personal collection to Dartmouth’s Media Ecology Project, which is led by Mark William, a professor of film studies. When completed, it will become part of a large collection of rare and valuable elements relating to early and mostly lost American films.

William said the main goal of the project is to make the material available to early movie fans and scholars alike. He added that he believes publishing the collection will lead to a new interest in the silent film time.

28.Why did Cleveland have the idea of collecting lobby cards?

A.To decorate his home. B.To hold a card exhibition.

C.To design different advertisements. D.To get pleasure from them. 29.What could the cards be used for?

A.Beautifying the theater lobby. B.Recording various early films. C.Making movie information known. D.Showing film-goers to their seats. 30.What is William’s attitude towards the project?

A.Confident. B.Cautious.

C.Doubtful. D.Worried.

31.Which can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Lost Materials: Come to Life

B.Silent Movies: Disappear for Ever

C.Lobby Cards: Express Silent Films

D.America Movies: Change with Time

【答案】28.D 29.C 30.A 31.C

根据第二段“The idea for the project came from Chicago-based collector Dwight Cleveland, who was introduced to the silent movie advertisements, also called lobby (大厅)cards, as a high school student in the 1970s. He then fell in love with the colors, designs and other elements used in the movie cards. That enjoyable experience made him want to start his own collection. “It just sort of screamed out, ‘Take me home!’“ Cleveland said. (这个项目的想法来自芝加哥的收藏家德怀特·克利夫兰,他在20世纪70年代还是一名高中生时接触到默片广告,也被称为电影大堂卡。然后,他爱上了电影卡片中使用的颜色、设计和其他元素。这段愉快的经历让他想开始自己的收藏。“它只是尖叫着,‘带我回家!’”克利夫兰说。)”可推断,克利夫兰会有收集电影大堂卡的想法是因为从它们身上得到乐趣。故选D。

In August, Jason M. Allen’s piece “Theatre D’opéra Spatial”-which he created with Al image generator Midjourney -won first place in the emerging artist division’s “digital arts photography” category at the Colorado State Fair Fine Arts Competition. The definition for the category states that digital art refers to works that use “digital technology as part of the creative process”.

Allen’s award-winning image has led to debates about what, exactly, it means to be an artist and whether AI can truly make art. “It felt bad for the exact sam e reason we don’t let robots participate in the Olympics, “ one Twitter user wrote. ”This is the literal definition of ‘pressed a few buttons to make a digital art piece’, “ another tweeted.

Yet while Allen didn’t use a paintbrush, there was plenty of work involved, he said. First, he played around with phrasing that led Midjourney to generate images of women in elegant dresses and space helmets, in an attempt to mix Victorian-style costuming with space themes. Over time, with many slight changes to his written prompt (提示符), he created 900 different versions of what led to his final image. Then he improved its resolution through Gigapixel AI and finally had the images printed.

Allen is glad the debate over whether AI can be used to make art is attracting so much attention. “Rather than hating on the technology, we need to recognize that it’s a powerful tool and use it for good so we can all move forward, ” Allen said.

Cal Duran, one of the judges for the competition, said that while Allen’s piece included a m ention of AI, he didn’t realize that when judging it. Still, he sticks by his decision to award it first place. “I think the AI technology may give more opportunities to people who may not find themselves artists in the conventional way, ” he said.

32.Why has Jason’s work led to debates?

A.It was a copy of a photograph.

B.He challenged the older artists.

C.It was created with the help of AI.

D.He broke the rule of the competition.

33.What can best describe Allen’s creating process?

A.Cooperative.

B.Energy-consuming.

C.Straightforward.

D.Imagination-lacking.

34.What can we learn about AI from the last paragraph?

A.It is a double-edged sword.

B.It attracts conventional artists.

C.It strikes art judges as no surprise.

D.It may open a new world to artists.

35.What is the text mainly about?

A.A trend to be AI artists.

B.An AI-generated art contest.

C.Responses to a winning AI artwork.

D.Curiosity about an image generator.

36.空前“If you suffer from social a nxiety, you will fear certain situations. Some fear speaking in front of groups of people, while others fear going to parties or other types of social events. In whichever situation your fear arises, you’ll probably experience sweating, flushing, feeling your heart race, or other symptoms of anxiety.(如果你患有社交焦虑症,你会害怕某些情况。

37.根据空前“Learning to physically relax is one of the best ways to combat anxiety.(学会放松身体是对抗焦虑的最好方法之一)”推知,空格处对感到焦虑的时候放松自己做出评论,D选项“It’s impossible to feel both relax ed and anxious.(既放松又焦虑是不可能的)”符合语境,故选D。

38.本段小标题是“Number Two: Slow breathing.(第二:缓慢呼吸)”,因此空格处内容应该与呼吸有关,G选项“Controlling your breathing when you suffer anxiety is another good way to deal with your emotions.(当你感到焦虑时控制呼吸是另一种处理情绪的好方法)”与呼吸有关,因此符合本段主旨,故选G。39. 根据空前“The key to visualization is to remember a place where you felt safe and comfortable. Once you remember this place, get a picture of it in your mind so clearly that you can feel, see, smell and even taste that place.(想象的关键是记住一个让你感到安全和舒适的地方。一旦你记住了这个地方,在脑海中清晰地描绘出它的画面,这样你就能感觉到、看到、闻到甚至尝到那个地方的味道)”推知,空格处应该对想象这种方法进行评价,C选项“This takes practice and patience.(这需要练习和耐心)”符合语境,this指代上文的visualization。故选C。

40.空格处是本段小标题,由空后的“But by facing your anxiety instead you’ll find that it is usually something you can tolerate after a few exposures.(但是通过直面你的焦虑,你会发现它通常是你在几次接触后可以忍受的)”可知,本段
