Garage sales are popular at present, but you need to keep an eye on those things and make sure that you don't fall prey to bad deal. We’ve brought you a list of items that you should stay away from at all times at a garage sale.

Item 1:Anything related to safety during sporting activities.

If you are new to adventure sports and want to save money on equipment like helmets, wet suits, climbing gears, etc.,you may go shopping at garage sales. However, remember that buying equipment which has been used takes a lot of risks, because the new buyer is unaware of its possible damage. To be safe, buy new equipment or rent it from stores.

Item 2:Anything related to babies.

Baby care items are certainly expensive and that’s why used goods are useful to most young parents. However,as a responsible parent, you will surely consider this a lot before making a decision. For example, stuffed toys may carry the bacteria,so you need to keep in mind that they may bring a health risk to your children.

Item 3:Anything that you sleep on.

Bedding items are a good place for all kinds of harmful insects. While garage sales may offer some tempting bargains,it is wise to stay away from them.If you really need to buy these, you must check on them thoroughly.

Item 4:Anything that requires a perfect fit.

Shoes tend to take the shape of the wearer’s feet after a while. So even if you see a pair of shoes that is of the same size as yours,it may not fit you well. It is also recommended that you should give old clothes a miss.

Not many things in life can be more irritating: you are having a conversation with friends, but they check their phones and begin replying to texts or checking their emails. The Guardian (卫报)described th e scene of a friend’s face buried in a screen as “a distinct 21st-century problem”. A new word has been created to describe this --- phubbing. It is the act of looking at your mobile phone instead of paying attention to others during a social interaction. Like pointing at one’s nose, phubbing is widely considered rude behavior. People everywhere are beginning to lose patience with the phenomenon.

A “Stop Phubbing” campaign group has been started in Australia and at least five others have sprung up in i ts wake as anger about the lack of manners grows. The campaign’s creator, Alex Haigh, 23, from Melbourne, said, “A group of friends and I were chatting when someone raised how annoying being ignored by people on mobiles was.” He has created a website where companies can download posters to discourage phubbing.

Phubbing is just one symptom of our increasing dependence on mobile phones and the Internet, which is replacing normal social interaction. A survey found that one out of three Britons would answer the phone in a restaurant and 19% said they would while being served in a shop. The survey came after a supermarket assistant in south London refused to serve a woman until she stopped using her phone. A poll, for a Sunday paper, also found that 54 per cent of people checked Facebook, Twitter or other social media every day, with 16 per cent checking more than ten times a day. An unsurprising 63 per cent of people carry their phone with them “almost all, or all of the time”, it found.

Phil Reed, a professor of psychology at Swansea University who has studied the Internet addiction disorder, said many phubbers show symptoms of addiction to their mobile phones.

Time magazine once pointed out, “Phubbing has a much greater potential harm to real-life connections by making people around us feel like we care more about posts than their presence.”

In the UK, Glamour magazine even imagined how novelist Jane Austen (1775-1817) would have written about people with bad mobile phone manners: “It is a truth universally ackno wledged that a single man or woman in possession of a good mobile phone must be in want of manners.”

5. Phubbing has come about because _______.

B. the friendship between people is becoming fragile

C. people are getting dependent on attraction online

D. there has been a lack of means of communication

6. Which of the statements is TRUE about the “Stop Phubbing” campaign?

A. It was first started in America and then it spread to Melbourne.

B. Companies can update posters against phubbing on the website.

C. Alex Haigh, 23, was the first one to find phubbing annoying.

D. Up till now, at least six groups have claimed to support it.

7. The supermarket assistant refused to serve the woman mainly because _______.

A. the woman buried her face in the mobile phone screen for a very long time

B. the woman ignored respect and manners by focusing only on her phone

C. the assistant lost his patience with the woman who was using her phone

D. it is rare for customers to answer the phone while being served in shops

8. In the last paragraph, the writer wants to tell readers that ______.

A. one with a mobile phone should mind his/her manners

B. Jane Austen must have worked for Glamour magazine

C. phubbing is going to be forbidden immediately in the UK

Hilary Smith belonged to a good family. But by the age of twenty, he had spent all the money the good old family had. He then had some trouble with the bank and was put in prison. He escaped from the prison and ran to Australia without delay.

Hilary did not like Australia and Australia did not like Hilary. What he could do seemed to be one of two things: die or work. Then he remembered that he was not alone in the world. He had an aunt.

She was his father’s only sister, but his father used to say she brought no glory to the family. Hilary, of course, tired to discover what she had done. It seemed that she had failed to marry a n obleman. Instead, she had chosen a husband who was connected with “trade”. Of course as soon as she became “Mrs. Parks”, her brother considered her dead. Later on, Mr. Parks died and left her a lot of money; but that did not bring her back to life in her b rother’s opinion.

Hilary discovered his aunt’s address. Fortunately she remained faithful and honest to him even after she fell ill. So Hilary’s star shone again, and soon he moved into her house and lived as comfortably as a sailor who had just reached harbor. He had only about a six pence in his pocket.

One thing was soon clear: his aunt was seriously ill, and nothing could cure her illness. Hilary was very worried. Fate had found a home for him, and was now going to throw out of it. There was only one thing that could save him: her will.

“Will?” she said, “yes, I have made one. That was when I was a girl and had not much money.

I left all my money to some religious people.”

“Didn’t you make another will when you were married?” Hilary asked.

His aunt sho ok her head. “No,” she said in a low voice. “There was no need. When I finally had a lot of money I found I had no relations.”

On the next day he went to the public library and examined a book of law. It told him what he already believed. When a woman is married, an earlier will loses its value. A new will must be made. If no new will is made, the money goes to the nearest relation. Hilary knew that he was his aunt’s only relation. His future was safe.

After a few months had passed, Hilary’s problems becam e serious. He badly needed money. He had expensive tastes, and owed a lot of money to shopkeepers. They trusted him because his aunt was rich; but the debt was terrible.

Unfortunately his aunt did not want to discuss money matters at all. In the end they had a

quarrel about the small amount of ten pounds. Hilary was not very angry. He began to wonder about a new problem. Was it kind to want his aunt to live any longer? Was it not better for her to die now? While he was considering what to do, his aunt told him that she was going to send for her lawyer. So she was going to make a new will, Hilary thought. She might leave all her money to someone else. Soon he reached a clear conclusion. He must do a great kindness to the poor old woman.

One night when the old servant who had been nursing his aunt went off, he doubled the amount of some medicine. The total amount was too great and it could just put her to sleep forever.

“Thank you,” his aunt took the glass from his hand with a grateful look. “I want, more tha n anything, to sleep, and never to wake up again. Is that what you wish, Hilary? Don’t blame me if I have some doubts about what you intended to do. Sick people get these ideas, you know. One thing I ought to explain to you. Mr. Parks never married me. He already had a wife and couldn’t marry again. That made your foolish father very angry with me. Well, if I am alive tomorrow I shall make another will in your favor. If I die tonight, you will get nothing. No, Hilary, don’t try to take the glass away. If yo u do that, I shall know; and I don’t want to know. Good night, Hilary.

Then, very carefully, she raised the glass to her mouth and drank.

9. From the story, we learn that Hilary’s aunt was ______.

A. bad-tempered and lonely

B. kind-hearted and wise

C. careless about money

D. Cruel to her niece

10. The underlined sentence “He must do a great kindness to the poor old woman.”in paragraph11 suggests that Hilary Smith ______.

A. was determined to put his aunt’s life to an end

B. decide to do his aunt a favor to call in a lawyer

C. made up his mind to take good care of his aunt

D. would help his aunt to donate all her money to religious people

11. Which of the following is the focus of the story?

A. Hilary’s aunt’s money

B. Hilary Smith’s debts

C. The intended murder

D. Hilary’s aunt’s marriage

Easy Ways to Keep Your Brain Sha rp

Everyone is forgetful, but as we age, we start to feel like our brains are slowing down a bit-and that can be a very annoying thing. 36 Read on for some techniques worth trying.

1. 37

People who regularly made plans and looked forward to upcoming events had a 50 percent reduced chance of Alzheimer's disease (老年性痴呆症), according to a recent

study. 38 Something as simple as setting a goal to have a weekly coffee date with a friend will do. There's evidence that people who have a purpose in life or who are working on long or short-term goals appear to do better. In other words, keep your brain looking forward.

2. Go for a walk.

Mildly raised glucose(葡萄糖)levels can harm the area of the brain that helps you form memories and physical activity can help get blood glucose down to normal levels. In fact, exercise produces chemicals that are good for your brain. 39

3. Learn something new.

Take a Spanish class online, join a drawing club, or learn to play cards. A study found that mental stimulation limits the weakening effects of aging on memory and the mind. But the best thing for your brain is when you learn something new and are physically active at the same time. 40 Or you can just go dancing with your friends.

A. Focus on the future.

B. This can be especially harmful to the aged.

C. It should be something like learning gardening.

D. So take a few minutes each day to do some reading.

E. But don't worry if our schedule isn't filled with life-changing events.

F. Luckily, research shows there is a lot you can do to avoid those moments.

G. In other words, when you take care of your body, you take care of your brain.

2019级高三年级第一次英语周考(志强专用) 英语试卷 命题教师:焦国禄 第一部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) A How often do you let other people like a bad driver, a rude waiter, or an angry boss, change your mood? Sixteen years ago I learned a lesson. I got in a taxi, and we took off for Grand Central Station. We were driving in the right lane when all of a sudden, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver used his brakes, the tires made a loud noise, and at the very last moment our car stopped just 3cm from the back of the other car. I couldn’t believe it. But then I couldn’t believe what happened next. The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, turned his head around and he started shouting at us. I couldn’t believe it! My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. So, I said, “Why did you just do that? This guy could have killed us!” And this is when my taxi driver told me what I now call, “The Law of the Garbage Truck”. He said, “Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of anger and disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they look for a place to dump it. And if you let them, they’ll dump it on you.” So I started thinking how often I let Garbage Trucks run right over me and how often I take their garbage and spread it to other people. I began to see Garbage Trucks. I see the load people are carrying. I see them coming to dump it. And like my taxi driver, I don’t take it personally. I just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. 21. What happened to the author on his way to Grand Central Station? A. He was caught in a traffic jam. B. He had a fight with his taxi driver. C. 高三文科英语周考 (考试时间90分钟满分120分) 第一部分听力(略) 第二部分阅读理解(共两节;满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) A In the tenth grade, I began volunteering at a veterinary hospital that was run by a family friend in order to get experience for what I thought would be my future job. As it turns out, the experience I gained at the hospital taught me the opposite:That my future was not in veterinary medicine. However, there is one particular Saturday morning that taught me something maybe more important. The hospital was in the middle of one of the poorer sections of the city and we frequently had people come in who just could not pay for the most basic treatments. On this Saturday a man and his young son, who was probably about 7 years old, walked in with a small cat in a cardboard box. I remember the cat had an eye infection(感染) but the man could not afford to pay for the cost of the medicine in addition to the exam. When he asked where the nearest animal shelter was, his son cried and started to argue with his father. Out of the blue, an older woman who was sitting in the waiting room stood up, walked up to the counter, and told the man that she would pay for anything that he could not afford. The man thanked her and the son got to keep a healthy cat. I had always thought it was the right thing to help out a needy person, but only saw people perform acts of kindness on TV or in movies. The woman in the vet’s office taught me that these things do happen in real life, and should happen more often. When I am hesitant to be the first person to help someone who is in need, I remember this woman, and have the courage to do it. Sometimes other people follow. 21.
