President Bush gives a speech at Tsinhua University (2002年)

Vice President Hu,thank you very much for your kind and generous remarks. Thank you for welcoming me and my wife, laura, here.

I am so grateful for the hospitality and honored for the reception at one of China’s and the world’s great universities.

The standards and the reputation of this university are known around the world, and I know what an achievement it is to be here. So congratulations.

My visit to China comes an important anniversary, as the vice president mentioned.Thirty years ago this week an American president arrived in China on an trip designed to end decades of estrangement and confront centuries of suspicion. President Richard Nixon showed the world that two vastly different

government could meet on the grounds of common interests in the spirit of mutual respect.

As they left the airport that day, Premier Zhou said this to President Nixon: “you handshake came over the vastest ocean in the world-25years of no communication.

During the 30 years since, America and China have exchanged many handshakes of friendship and commerce. And as we have had more contact with each other ,the citizens of both countries have gradually learned more about each other. And that's important.

It was my honor to visit China in 1975.Some of you were not even born then. It shows how old I am.

And a lot has changed in your country since then. China has made amazing progress in openness and enterprise and economic freedom. And this progress previews China’s great potential. China has joined the World Trade Organization, and as you live up to its obligations, they inevitably will bring changes to Chinese legal system. A morden China will have a consistent rule of law to govern commerce and secure the rights of its people.

The new China you generation is building will need the profound wisdom of your traditions. The lure of materialism challenges society in our country- and in many successful countries.

All these changes will lead to a stronger, more confident China, a China that can astonish and enrich the world, a China that you generation will help create.

This is one of the most exciting times in the history of your country, a time when even the grandest hopes seem were in your reach.(本句包含一个定语从句,定语从句直接跟在先行词后面会使句子显得冗长,因此将从句放到主句后面,相应的先行词需要再出现一次) My nation offers you our respect and our friendship.

Six years from now, athletes from America and all around the world will come to your country for the Olympic Games, and I am confident they will find a China that is becoming a Da guo, a leading nation, at peace with its people and at peace with the world.(本句有两个分句组成,第一个分句的主干是athletes will come to your country,第二个分句的主干是I am confident…..)

Nong hao! Good afternoon. It is a great honor for me to be here in Shanghai, and to have this opportunity to speak with all of you. I'd like to thank Fudan University's President Yang for his hospitality and his gracious welcome. I'd also like to thank our outstanding Ambassador, Jon Huntsman, who exemplifies the deep ties and respect between our nations. I don't know what he said, but I hope it was good. (Laughter.) What I'd like to do is to make some opening remarks, and then what I'm really looking forward to doing is taking questions, not only from students who are in the audience, but also we've received questions online, which will be asked by some of the students who are here in the audience, as well as by Ambassador Huntsman. And I am very sorry that my Chinese is not as good as your English, but I am looking forward to this chance to have a dialogue. This is my first time traveling to China, and I'm excited to see this majestic country. Here, in Shanghai, we see the growth that has caught the attention of the world -- the soaring skyscrapers, the bustling streets and entrepreneurial activity. And just as I'm impressed by these signs of China's journey to the 21st century, I'm eager to see those ancient places that speak to us from China's distant past. Tomorrow and the next day I hope to have a chance when I'm in Beijing to see the majesty of the Forbidden City and the wonder of the Great Wall. Truly, this is a nation that encompasses both a rich history and a belief in the promise of the future.

Our Future: A Battle between Dreams And Reality Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen: When I was in the primary school, I have a dream. I want to invent a device which could bring you from one place to another in no time at all. When I was in the secondary school, my dream was to study in my ideal university. And when eventually I got into the university, my dream was to graduate. How pathetic! When we grow up, we dream less And become more realistic. Why? Why do we have to change our dreams, so, so in order to let it be "fulfilled"? Why do we have to surrender to the so-called "reality"? What IS the reality actually? Ladies And gentlemen, the reality is not real. It is a barrier keeping us from all the possible fantasies. Flying, for example, had been a dream to mankind for thousands of years. A hundred years ago, "man could not fly" was still regarded as the "reality". Now if that was really the reality, what did the Wright brothers do? How did some of you get to Macau? Only when we believe that the reality is not real can we soar with our dreams. People say that our future is a battle between the reality And our dreams. And if, unfortunately, Mr. Reality wins this war, then I see no future of mankind at all. AIDS will never be curable as this IS the reality; People living in the undeveloped countries will suffer from

As America learns more about China, I am concerned that the Chinese people d o not always see a cl ear picture of my country. This happens for many reasons, some of them of our own making. Our movies and tel evision shows often d o not portray the values of the real America I know. Our successful businesses show the strength of American commerce, but the community spirit and contributions of those businesses are not always as visible as their monetary success. Some of the erroneous pictures of America are painted by others.

I particularly like the old Chinese saying--If you think in terms of a year, plant a seed; if you think in terms of ten years, plant trees; if you think in terms of 100 years, teach the people. In India, too, the ancient saying is vyaye krate vardhate eva nityam, vidhya dhanam sarva dhan pradhanam. The wealth that increases by giving. That wealth is knowledge and is supreme of all possessions. This is one example of how our two nations are united in their timeless wisdom. I began my journey in China in Xi'an. In doing so, I retraced the footsteps of the Chinese monk Xuanzang. He travelled to India from Xi'an in the seventh century in search of knowledge and returned to Xi'an as a

It is wonderful to be here at this university. What a special place. I just looked around a little bit here, it’s a gorgeous, gorgeous place. I want to congratulate you for going to this magnificent university here. Now, the last time I was here in China was five years ago, and then I was promoting my movies. They had a movie festival here, the Arnold Schwarzenegger Movie Festival. I remember they showed all my movies for a week—which was a rarity, may I remind you—and they also showed the movies on television. But we also were here to promote Special Olympics, which is an organization that helps people with mental disabilities, so I was here for both reasons. But this time I’m here as the governor of the great state of California. I’m here representing the people of California, and we’re here on a trade mission to see how we can do more business with China and to help each other, because both California is a very fast growing state, and China is a very fast growing country, and there are a lot of things that we can do for one another. But I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to come here today and to talk with the young people; as a matter of fact, to the brightest young people of China. And this is why it is so great to be here at the Tsinghua University, and I’m honored that I was invited here. Now, I read a little bit about the history of Tsinghua, and I learned that actually this school originally prepared students to attend universities in America. Now, I also know that since the attack on our World Trade Centers it has become more and more difficult to go to the universities in America because you need to fill out all kinds of paperwork now and you have to get visas, and it’s very complicated, and you have to wait a much longer period of time to go over there. But let me tell you, things are improving already. I’ve heard that it’s easing up, the restrictions, and it’s easier to get a visa. My young Chinese friends, I want to tell you that in case no one from America has ever invited you, let me do this right now personally. I want to warmly invite all of you here to come to the United States, and especially to come to California, because that’s the happening place. California is the best place. Please come and visit us, we will welcome you. I invite you all to come there and to travel, to meet the American people, and to come there and study in our universities, and some day hopefully you will come and do business over there, or maybe you’ll want to move over there. Whatever your goal is, you’re always welcome. America, after all, let’s not forget, is the land of opportunity. And it’s not only the land of opportunity for Austrians like me, but for Chinese people as well. Remember that. I know that beginning with this century, China is also becoming a land of opportunity.
