Hamlet is generally regarded as Shakespeare's most popular play on the stage, for it has the qu alities of a "blood-and-thunder" thriller & a philosophical exploration of life & death. The play opens with Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, appearing in a mood of world-weariness occasioned by his father's recent death & by his mother's hasty remarriage with Claudius, his father's brother. While encountering his father's ghost, Hamlet is informed that Claudius has murdered his father & then taken over both his father's throne & widow. This, Hamlet, is urged by the ghost to seek revenge for his father's "foul & most unnatural murder." Trapped in a nightmare world of spying, testing & plotting, & apparently bearing the intolerable burden of the duty to revenge his father's death, Hamlet is obliged to inhabit a shadow world, to live suspended between fact & fiction, language & action. The defiant spirit of Sat an simply shows the proud and somber political passions or the persecuted revolutionaries after Restoration .

Though the purpose of this poem is, in Milton words, to “justify the ways of God to man”,yet as Satan tries to justify himself by posing as a rebel against tyranny . Milton apparently unconsciously makes the devil serves as his own mouthpiece . In this part Satan tells his followers never to submit, but to fight for the bright future. The fiery utterance of Satan to his followers expose Satan as a revolutionary who is against depression and tyranny in the capacity of a bourgeois revolutionary. To Milton, the proud and sobre Satan represented the rebellious spirit against unjust authority.

The early bird catches the worm! ? 最后是语言学,一本是Fromkin的《An introduction to language》,一本是Yule的《The study of language》的书。

What’s symbolism? 1)Symbolism is a movement in literature and the visual arts that originated in France in the late 19th century. In literature, symbolism was an aesthetic movement that encouraged writers to express their ideas, feelings, and values by means of symbols or suggestions rather than by direct statements. Hawthorne and Melville are masters of symbolism in America in the 19th century.

48. “Young Goodman Brown ”is one of Hawthorne ’s most profound tales. What is the allegorical meaning of Brown, the protagonist? What does Hawthorne set out to prove in this tale? How does Melville comment on Hawthorne ’s manner of concerning with guilt and evil?

**ELIZABETH **4. A comparison of the three giants: William Dean Howells; Mark Twain; and Henry James They are the three dominant figures of the realistic period. The forerunner of American Realism is Howells. Though the three writers wrote more or less at the same time, they differed in their understanding of the “truth.”While Mark Twain and Howells seemed to have paid more attention to the “life”of the Americans, Henry James had apparently laid a greater emphasis on the “inner world”of man. Though Twain and Howells both shared the same concern in presenting the truth of the American society, they had each of them different emphasis. Howells focused his discussion on the rising middle class and the way they lived, while Twain preferred to have his own region and people at the forefront of his stories. This particular concern about the local character of a region came about as “local colorism,”a unique variation (变体) of American literary realism.

At the same time, the working conditions under which workers toiled were unimaginably brutal, especially in texible factories and coal mines where women and children were widely employed. The worsening living and working conditions, the mass unemployment and the new Poor Law of 1834 with its workhouse system finally gave rise to Chartist Movement (1836-1848).Amid such a class-struggle period, many writers turned to social criticism. So appeared a new literary trend:critical realism. These realists are mainly concerned with the society, the social system and the people in the society. B.Features of Victorian Literature Victorian literature,as a product of its age, naturally took on its quality of magnitude and diversity. It was many-sided and complex, and reflected both romantically realistically the great changes that were going on in people's life and thought .Besides, it truthfully respresented the reality and spirit of the age. The high-spirit vitality, the down-to-earth earnesteness, the good-natured humor and unbounded imagination are all unprecedented .In almost every genre it paved the way for coming century ,where its spirits, values and experiments are to witness their bumper harvest. Great writers and great works abounded. I.Charles Dickens 1.Life of Dickens Charles Dickens(1812-1870) was born in Portsmouth ,a poor British family,in 1812.He was a son of a petty navy office clerk.Because his father had been taken into prison for debts,he was forced to leave school to work at a blacking factory. In the factory,as a child he always felt hungry, lonely and ignored. The hardship and suffering inflicted upon the sensitive ,young Charles had left an ever-lasting bitter remembrance in his later life.In 1827,Charles entered a lawyer's office, and two years later he became a parliamentary reporter for newspapers. The journalistic experience not only enabled him to get acquainted with some inside knowledge of the British legal and political system, and gave him a chance to meet people of all kinds, but also laid a good foundation for his coming literary career. From 1833, Dickens began to write, occasional sketches of lond life, which were later collected and published under the tittle Sketches by Boz (1836),soon the Posthumous Paper of the Pick-wick Club(1836-1837) appeared in monthly installments. It made him the most popular English author of his time.Dickens was not only an editor but also an ower of several newspapers and magazines. He was also an enthusiastic participant or organizer of some charity activities. Dickens is one of the greatest critical realist writers of the Victorian age and also is known as an outstanding master of the Language.During his 34 years' creating,Dichens wrote 14 novels[The myster of Edwin Drood (《艾

Romantic

Chapter 3 ------------The Romantic Period(英国) Romanticism refers to an artistic and intellectual movement originating in Europe in the late 18th century and characterized by a heightened interest in nature, emphasis on the individual's expression of emotion and imagination, departure from the attitudes and forms of classicism, and rebellion against established social rules and conventions. Historical background: Rousseau’s ideas provided guiding principles for the French Revolution (1789-1794) The primarily agricultural society had been replaced by a modern industrialized one. Political reforms and mass demonstrations shook the foundation of aristocratic rule in Britain. Cultural background 1.Inspiration for the romantic approach initially came from two great shapers of thought, French philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau and German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Rousseau established the cult of the individual and championed the freedom of the human spirit. Goethe and his compatriots extolled the romantic spirit as manifested in German folk songs, Gothic architecture, and the plays of English playwright William Wordsworth. 2. The Romantics saw man essentially as an individual in the solitary state and emphasized the special qualities of each individual’s mind. Romanticism actually constitutes a change of direction from attention to the outer world of social civilization to the inner world of the human spirit. 3. In the works of the sentimental writers, we note a new interest in literatures and legends other than those of Greece and Rome. It was in effect a revolt of the English imagination against the neoclassical reason. Features of the romantic literature 1.Expressiveness: Instead of regarding poetry as “a mirror to nature”, the romantics hold that the object of the artist should be the expression of the artist’s emotions, impressions, or beliefs 2. Imagination: Romantic literature puts great emphasis on the creative function of the imagination, seeing art as a formulation of intuitive, imaginative perceptions that tend to speak a nobler truth than that of fact, logic, or the here and now. 3.Singularity: Romantic poets have a strong love for the remote, the unusual, the strange, the supernatural, the mysterious, the splendid, the picturesque, and the illogical. 4. Worship of nature: Romantic poets see in nature a revelation of Truth, the “living garment of God”. 5.Simplicity: Romantic poets tend to turn to the humble people and the everyday life for subjects, employing the commonplace, the natural and the simple as their materials 6.The Romantic period is an age of poetry. The Romantic period is also a great age of prose. The major novelists of the Romantic period are Jane Austen and Walter Scott. Gothic novel was one phase of the Romantic Movement. Its principal elements are violence, horror, and the supernatural Willam Blake Points of view: 1. Politically Blake was a rebel, mixing a good deal with the radicals like Thomas Paine. He strongly criticized the capitalists’cruel exploitation. He cherished great expectations and enthusiasm for the French Revolution and regarded it as a necessary stage leading to the millennium predicted by the biblical prophets. 2. Literarily Blake was the first important Romantic poet, showing a contempt for the rule of reason, opposing the classical tradition of the 18th century, and treasuring the individual’s imagination. His works: Poetical Sketches (1783) Marriage of Heaven and Hell (1790) Songs of Innocence (1809) Songs of Experience (1794) 1. Songs of Innocence (1809)
