Passage One

One day in 1754, a man went to the market in Florence, Italy, and bought some meat. The shopkeeper wrapped the meat in a piece of paper and the man took it home. When he unwrapped the meat, he was surprised to see some old writing on the paper.

This man was in charge of the public library, so he knew a lot about old books and old writing. He realized that the paper was a page of scientific notes.

"Only one man wrote like that," the librarian said to himself. "It was Galileo who wrote these notes!"

Who was Galileo? Galileo was a famous Italian scientist. He was a man of ideas, but he was also a man of action. He made many experiments in order to find out more about the earth and the universe. Galileo believed that scientists should not only sit in universities and talk about theory; they should also make practical experiments and learn from the results.

Galileo wrote down notes of all the experiments he made. After Galileo's death in 1642, Viviani, one of his students, collected the notes together and put them into his own library. However, when Viviani died, nobody looked at Galileo's notes any longer. For many years, people forgot about them.

The librarian hurried back to the market and asked the shopkeeper where he had got the paper from. The shopkeeper led him to the house where he bought the paper from. In the house, the librarian found many more of Galileo's notes. The family gave them to him.

In this way, a large number of important notes about Galileo's experiments were saved.

Passage Two

A favorite story among acoustical (声学的) experts concerns a noisy Long Island suburb where, day and night, huge trucks thundered down a freeway, jet planes roared overhead, and a pumping station maintained a low, continuous thumping. One night all mechanical sounds stopped briefly; immediately half the people in the neighborhood awoke, sat upright, and exclaimed: "What was that?"

Americans are drowned in noise, one of the unwanted and unnecessary waste products of the twentieth century. Scientists speak of noise in decibels -- units by which they measure the intensity levels of the sound waves that beat against our eardrums. The shuffling of paper in silent surroundings represents about 15 decibels; a low conversation, 40 decibels; and the sound of an automobile horn, 90 decibels. In general, sounds above 80 decibels begin to irritate the human ear. Noise also causes increased muscular tension, which at night may deprive the body of rest.

Experiments have shown that 160 decibels of noise are fatal for small fur-bearing animals. Although equal exposure is not fatal to man, it may destroy hearing. Over the past thirty years the loudest sounds to which man has been exposed have increased from 120 decibels, the equivalent of the roar of a two-engine propeller plane, to 150 decibels, the blast of a four-engine jet. This is an average increase in volume of one decibel a year, and constitutes a potentially dangerous source of physical damage.

36.The story about a Long Island suburb is retold in order to show that __A____.

A we may find it easier to fall asleep in noisy surroundings

B contrary to popular belief, mechanical sounds are bearable

C nowadays suburbs are not just as quiet as we expect

C a source of mental illness

D a measurement of the intensity of sound waves

38.Noise may interfere with man's sleep by ___B___.

A causing him to have terrible dreams

B distracting his attention

C increasing his muscular tension

D keeping him restless

39.Sounds of 160 decibels may __A____.

A be the loudest man can image

B do physical damage to man

C cause certain small animals to die

D Both B and C.

40.The author's purpose in writing this passage is to __A____.

A draw our attention to the importance of controlling noise

B show that man has more tolerance than animals when exposed to noise

C give a brief introduction to sound measurement

D illustrate that noise is a by-product of modernization

Passage Three

In recent years, large numbers of people are living a single life, at least temporarily, for this reason or other. However, they are often pressured to marry by their families and friends, who regard single adults as irresponsible and unfortunate.

Rose and Bill talk about the frustrations and disagreements. Rose has quarreled with her family. Her parents continually ask her why she doesn’t get married and have been putting pressure on

Rose to find a husband. This makes Rose angry.

Bill understands how Rose feels. He has also been upset about how his friends react to his single life. His women friends usually find him dates even if he doesn’t want them. They introduce him to new people as the eligible bachelor. Sometimes Rose and Bill feel they might be better off financially if they each found a marriage partner. They know that two people living together and earning two salaries can afford more than a single person can. They also know about the income tax advantages that married couples enjoy. However, for the moment, each of them is committed to remaining single.

Young people feel man pressures not to get married. Rose has a very good job at the bank and there is a possibility of a promotion in the near future. A promotion means a higher salary and more responsibility.

She questions whether she can combine success in business with marriage. How can she fully and completely take care of a wife’s duties while she can also succeed brilliantly in her office? Both demand a great amount of time and work.

Bill, too, is hesitant about getting married because of his active social life. He has many friends and is out with one of them almost every night. Hoe can he ever settle down and stay home with one person? Will he lose his friends?

Passage One

Deaths from cigarettes are likely to more than triple over the next quarter century to 20 every minute around the world, scientists warn in a new global survey. The survey covers 45 countries, 15 more than the previous study. The additional nations are from eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.

Sixty million deaths have been caused by smoking since the 1950s, the investigators estimate. They predict smoking will kill about 10 million people a year by 2020, the vast majority in developing countries where the habit continues to attract young women.

Investigators were unable to acquire smoking statistics from every country, which would allow the most precise estimates. Instead, they compared data on lung-cancer death rates among American non-smokers to the lung-cancer death rate in each country to get an estimate of the number of smoking in a nation.

The researchers said they used lung-cancer rates as the yardstick (标尺) because in developed countries, lung cancer is closely related to smoking and so seldom caused by any other factor among non-smokers.

According to the report, 10 percent of middle-age British men will die from smoking by the time they are 35 to 69 years old. In Poland, 20 percent of men are doomed to die from smoking, the

researchers predict.

Passage Two

Women often say they feel the effects of alcohol more than men do, even if they drink the same amount relative to body size. Now there’s medical evidence that women do become affected more quickly, in part because their stomachs are less able to break down alcohol.

Scientists have found that, in general, about 30 percent more alcohol

appears in the bloodstreams of women than of men of similar weight after up to two drinks have been consumed. And considering that men are usually bigger than women, the findings suggest that the first drink for a woman may have the same effect as the first two drinks for a man.

Some of the alcohol that people drink is broken down by a stomach enzyme(酶) and never reaches the bloodstream. Since the stomach enzyme is half as active in women as in men, more of what women drink enters the bloodstream in the form of pure alcohol. It is also found that the enzyme activity is lower in alcoholics -particularly women -who had no noticeable protection. This may help explain why more alcoholic women suffer from liver damage than alcoholic men.

Passage Three

Extra money does buy some happiness. But not as much as many people would think. Recently, two economists have constructed a sort of happiness index that assigns‖3‖ to ―very happy‖, ―2‖ to ―pretty happy‖ and ―1‖ to ―not too happy‖, and thus they reckon that an extra dollar provides 0.000004.9 in additional happiness. Or $10.000 would give you 0.04 units of extra happiness.

The two economists, using this index, assign a dollar value to other factors that are associate with more or less happiness. They find:

Second and following marriages are less happy than first marriages on average. A 16-year-old boy whose parents divorced has a lower level of well-being in adulthood.

Other findings include:

To bring African-Americans up to average happiness levels, they would need an extra $30.000 in annual income.

This, the authors guess, may be the impact of racial prejudice. Over the past few decades, however, their happiness level has risen. ―Blacks have made up some ground,‖ they say.

Unemployment is highly damaging to men’s happiness. It would take $60.000 a year to make up for being jobless.

Me n’s happiness has trended up. Women’s sense of well-being, though higher than that of men, had fallen‖ noticeably‖.

Policies aimed at ending prejudice against women in fact have not increased their happiness on the whole.

The educated people tend to be happier than those who are less educated. Many people may think that this is because they have higher income that often goed with greater education. But in fact even when separated from the higher income, the educated may have a higher sense of well-being.

Happiness and life satisfaction are U-shaped according to age. In the United States, people’s sense of well-being goes down to a low around 40 and then rises.

Perhaps, the authors suggest, people adapt to their circumstances, give up some unfulfilled ambition by the middle of their lives, and enjoy life more.

Generally the number o children and siblings a person has doesn’t have an impact on both children and siblings. Some scientists found in their separate study, ‖ The Rising Well-Being of the Young‖.

41. Extra money___C__.

A. may buy some happiness

B. can buy as much happiness as people expect

C. is certain to buy some happiness

Directions:There are three reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best answer to each question. Then you should mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

Passage One

For anybody who ever failed a maths test, something marvellous happened in Stockholm on

December 10, 2000. A soft-spoken fellow from Kansas -a guy who was turned down by the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) because his maths scores were too low and who never had much formal physics training -received the Nobel Prize in physics. This is slightly ironical, because Jack St Clair Kilby is not a physicist.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences was willing to overlook that minor detail, though, because Kilby did, after all, come up with the most valuable invention of the past half-century: the microchip. Jack Kilby's idea sparked the information age. The tiny silicon chip at the heart of all digital devices has arguably become the most important industrial commodity since crude oil. Without the chip, there could be no personal computers or mobile phones, no Internet or Play-Stations. The semiconductor integrated circuit has changed the world as fundamentally as did the light bulb, the telephone and the horseless carriage. But somehow the man who made the microchip has never achieved the recognition that Edison, Bell and Ford enjoyed. Thanks to the Nobel Prize, at age 78, Jack Kilby finally received the attention he deserved.

31. Kilby is a(n) __A__.

A) American B) Frenchman C) Swedish D) Englishman

32. Kilby won the Nobel Prize for _D___.

34. Before the invention of the microchip, __D__ was the most important industrial commodity.

35. The achievements made by Kilby were finally recognized __A__.

A) by his winning of Nobel Prize B) after the widespread of computers

C) after he died D) when he was admitted by MIT

Passage Two

ACT, Inc., is an independent, not-for-profit organization that provides more than a hundred assessment, research, information, and program management services in the broad areas of educational planning, career planning, and workforce development.

The concept for the American College Testing Program emerged in the 1950s, and the organization itself was founded in 1959. At this time, U. S. political and demographic (人口的) developments were inspiring major changes in attitudes about, and approaches to, higher education.

Before 1959, there was only one nationwide college-entrance testing

program, which focused on identifying the very best students for admission to the nation's elite universities. The remainder of college students were often admitted on the basis of family ties or entrance exams offered by individual institutions. In the late 1950s, large numbers of students were approaching college age and wanted to attend college. Financial aid to students was increasing, and most colleges wanted to grow. That was the atmosphere in which ACT's founders established the American College Testing Program.

As the nation's view of education has evolved to one embracing lifelong learning, ACT's programs have grown and evolved in the same direction, helping people plan for and assess learning throughout their lives from college through graduate school and also in the workplace.

Passage Three

An English man decided to marry a Japanese girl in Tokyo on 4th September— the fourth day of the ninth month. Their Japanese friends were very shocked, because the Japanese think that the numbers four and nine are unlucky. This is because the Japanese for ―four‖ is the same as an old Japanese word for ―sorrow‖ and ―darkness‖.

The young couple thought about the problem for a long time. The Englishman wanted to get m arried on 4th September because it was his mother’s birthday. His mother couldn’t come to Japan for the wedding, and he wanted her to feel part of the ceremony.

The Japanese girl said she wasn’t superstitious but… There was also another problem. The fourth of September was on a Friday.

Of course, the numbers four and nine aren’t unlucky in every country. The Italians think the number seventeen is unlucky number. Seven is a mystery number. A lot of people think it’s lucky.

Three is a lucky number. When things are difficult, people think they will be successful the third time. I failed my driving test twice. The third time I passed it. So three times seven is lucky. Queen Victoria always had fine weather for her ceremonies because there were twenty-one cannons.

The most common unlucky number is thirteen. People don’t like to live in a hours or flat that is number thirteen. People don’t like to have parties with thirteen people. People don’t like to do important things on the thirteenth of the month. Also, when you add the Japanese unlucky numbers together—nine plus four – they make thirteen.

There aren’t many business meetings on the thirteenth of the month especially when the thirteenth of the month especially when the thirteenth is on Friday. Friday is always unlucky. Adam and Eve left the Garden of Eden on a Friday, Jesus Christ died on a Friday. (There were thirteen people at His Last Supper.) In Europe, they killed criminals on a Friday.

For some people, superstitions do the opposite things. My elder brother was born on the thirteenth. He passed his exams on the thirteenth. He married on the thirteenth. He became a pilot on the thirteenth. It was always a luck day for him. He was killed on the seventh.

41. We learn from the passage that___D__.

D. neither of them thought it was lucky day

Small Schools Rising This year's list of the top 100 high schools shows that today, those with fewer students are flourishing. Fifty years ago, they were the latest thing in educational reform: big, modern, suburban high schools with students counted in the thousands. As baby boomers(二战后婴儿潮时期出生的人) came of high-school age, big schools promised economic efficiency. A greater choice of courses, and, of course, better football teams. Only years later did we understand the trade-offs this involved: the creation of excessive bureaucracies(官僚机构),the difficulty of forging personal connections between teachers and students.SAT scores began dropping in 1963;today,on average,30% of students do not complete high school in four years, a figure that rises to 50% in poor urban neighborhoods. While the emphasis on teaching to higher, test-driven standards as set in No Child Left Behind resulted in significantly better performance in elementary(and some middle)schools, high schools for a variety of reasons seemed to have made little progress. Size isn't everything, but it does matter, and the past decade has seen a noticeable countertrend toward smaller schools. This has been due ,in part ,to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which has invested $1.8 billion in American high schools, helping to open about 1,000 small schools-most of them with about 400 kids each with an average enrollment of only 150 per grade, About 500 more are on the drawing board. As a manager, Tiffany is responsible for interviewing applicants for some of the positions with her company .During one interview, she noticed that the candidate never made direct eye contact. She was puzzled and somewhat disappointed because she liked the individual otherwise. He had a perfect resume and gave good responses to her questions, but the fact that he never looked her in the eye said “untrustworthy,” so she decided to offer the job to her second choice. “It wasn’t until I attended a diversity workshop that I realized the person we passed over was the perfect person,” Tiffany confesses. A real estate recruiter we worked with illustrates the positive difference such training can make .
