Seven years ago, back in2010,some reports covered a story that the world's longest railway tunnel was under construction in Switzerland. At that point it had already been under construction for over a decade. It had been voted to be built nearly a quarter of a century ago!The idea to build it could date back to nearly 70years ago—about as old as some of your grandparents!

Yesterday,it was finally ready!

It's about35miles long and runs7,500feet beneath the Swiss Alps,a famous mountain range in Switzerland. It even runs under an old tunnel that was there before.

It took a total of17years to build at a cost of$12billion!28million tons of rock were dug.Two million truckloads of earth were removed!

The tunnel connects northern and southern Europe. The opening of this tunnel was such a big deal that the Germany's leader,Chancellor Angela Merkel,France's president,Francois Hollande, and Italy's prime minister,Matteo Renzi, were all there to celebrate,as was Austria's chancellor Christian Kern.

It's called the Gotthard Base Tunnel.Eventually,325freight and passenger trains will go through the tunnel, relieving a lot of traffic on the roadways there and making it a more environmentally friendly option. The Gotthard Base Tunnel is a wonder of engineering and makes us want to visit it!

In an effort to discourage people from using plastics, scientists have been hard

at work inventing alternative packaging products. From water bottles made from

seaweed to cutlery 餐具) made from rice and wheat, a number of inventions are set

to change the way we eat while we are on the go, or having a relaxing picnic in the

park.

The idea of using seaweed to make ecofriendly (环保的) water bottles has been

around for a few years. Recently, Ari Jonsson took his invention a water bottle

made from red seaweed — to show off at a festival. The bottles will only hold their

shape as long as they are filled. As soon as these bottles are empty they will begin

to break down, though they would be perfectly safe to eat. Ari Jonsson's bottles

are a step closer to a widely used alternative to the current plastic ones.

The eatable water container is not the only product to add to our image of the

future. Narayana Pessapaty has also created eatable spoons. After the success of

his spoons, Mr. Pessapaty is ready toexpand and introduce forksand chopsticks to

his menu. His aim is to largely reduce the amount of plastic waste, which is a huge

problem for waste sitesall over the world. It is a product thatmay take up to 500

years to break down, and recycling companies worldwide are struggling to deal with

it.

Aside from the obvious benefits to the environment, this new packaging is also

cheap to produce and therefore cheap to buy. Even better is the fact that similar

eatable cutlery can be made at home, possibly a science project for children or just

fun with friends. Why not get experimenting and create your own recipes?

9.Why do scientists invent alternative packaging products?

A .To make people's life more convenient.

B .To reduce the amount of plastic waste.

C .To change the way we picnic outside.

D .To show off their inventive talents.

A 解析:

In an effort to discourage people from

using plastics...

10.What makes Ari Jonsson's water bottles ecofriendly?

A .They can be made at home.

B .They are cheap to produce and buy.

C .They will hold their shape when they are filled.

D .They will break down themselves when empty.

As soon as these bottles are empty they

will begin to break down...

The bottles will only hold their shape as

long as they arefilled.(瓶子只有在满的时候才能定型)而误选 C 项,这只是介绍了这种

11.What do Ari and Narayana's inventions have in common?

A .They are convenient to carry.

B .They are safe to eat.

C .They can be used for a short time.

D .They are heavier than plastics.

根据第二段第四句... though they would be perfectly safe

to eat. Narayana Pessapaty has also created eatable spoons.

12.What can be inferred from this passage?

A .Homemade eatable cutlery is likely to be popular.

B .Eatable cutlery will completely replace plastics in the near future.

C .No recycling companies can break down plastic waste.

D .It's unsafe for individuals to invent eatable cutlery at home.

Even better is the fact that similar

eatable cutlery can be made at home, possibly a science project for children or just

fun with friends.

故选 A 项。

阅读理解D专练5篇 Passage 1(2017江苏,D) Old Problem, New Approaches While clean energy is increasingly used in our daily life, global warming will continue for some decades after CO2 emissions(排放) peak. So even if emissions were to begin to decrease today, we would still face the challenge of adapting to climate change. Here I will stress some smarter and more creative examples of climate adaptation. When it comes to adaptation, it is important to understand that climate change is a process. We are therefore not talking about adapting to a new standard, but to a constantly shifting set of conditions. This is why, in part at least, the US National Climate Assessment says that:“There is no ‘one-size fits all’ adaptation.”Nevertheless, there are some actions that offer much and carry little risk or cost. Around the world, people are adapting in surprising ways, especially in some poor countries. Floods have become more damaging in Bangladesh in recent decades. Mohammed Rezwan saw opportunity where others saw only disaster. His not-for-profit organization runs 100 river boats that serve as floating libraries, schools, and health clinics, and are equipped with solar panels and other communicating facilities. Rezwan is creating floating connectivity(连接) to replace flooded roads and highways. But he is also working at a far more fundamental level:his staff show people how to make floating gardens and fish ponds to prevent starvation during the wet season. Elsewhere in Asia even more astonishing actions are being taken. Chewang Norphel lives in a mountainous region in India, where he is known as the Ice Man. The loss of glaciers(冰川) there due to global warming represents an enormous threat to agriculture. Without the glaciers, water will arrive in the rivers at times when it can damage crops. Norphel’s inspiration came from seeing the waste of water over winter, when it was not needed. He directed the wasted water into shallow basins where it froze, and was stored until the spring. His fields of ice supply perfectly timed irrigation(灌溉) water. Having created nine such ice reserves, Norphel calculates that he has stored about 200,000m3of water. Climate change is a continuing process, so Norphel’s ice reserves will not last forever. Warming will overtake them. But he is providing a few years during which the farmers will, perhaps, be able to find other means of adapting.

2008/11/17 A His own way to express love Yesterday was our three-year anniversary. We didn’t do anything romantic: we just walked hand in hand and talked about our past and future. This was pretty much what I had expected. Andy is unromantic guy: no sweet words or roses. Smart as he is, he is a little bit shy expressing his love. In contrast, I am an outspoken girl who likes to show her feelings directly. So needless to say, I often feel that is insensitive. I envy other girls who are surrounded by sweet words. I was in this sullen mood until I heard a beautiful sentence one day: “If someone does not love you in the way you like, it does not mean that he does not love you.”this simple but sensible sentence made me think about our happy days and recall his deep concern for me. One cold winter night, I got a high fever. He hurried to my dorm and took me to the hospital. He was in such a hurry that he even forgot to wear socks. Upon arrival, he ran through the hospital handling all the formalities(手续). When I was put on a drip(输液), he told me interesting stories to make me happy. Being held in his warm arms and listening to his tender voice, I had never felt so safe and comfortable. Gradually, I felt asleep. When I woke up 15 minutes later, he was still whispering to me. He explained that if he had stopped talking I would have waken up. At that moment, I found love in his sparkling eyes. Another time, I had a bad quarrel with my best friend. Although I knew it was my fault, I refused to admit it. I was angry when he insisted I apologize to her. He said that it was difficult to admit a mistake, but this was what everyone should do. The next morning, I apologized to my friend and asked for her forgiveness. My unromantic boyfriend cares about my health like my father, understand me like my mother and helps me like my elder brother. (344 words) 1. Why does the author envy other girls of her age? A. 阅读理解综合练(十二) A (2016·10浙江) Digital technology—email and smart phones especially—have vastly improved workers’ ability to be productive outside of a traditional office.Even so,most white-collar work still happens in an office. One reason is that, according to findings of a new survey(调查) of office workers conducted by Wakefield Research for the IT company Citrix, most bosses are doubtful about remote working.Half of the workers say their boss doesn’t accept it,and only 35 percent say it’s tolerated. Skeptical bosses will likely have their doubts reinforced(加深) by the same survey, which shows that 43 percent of workers say they’ve watched TV or a movie while “working” remotely, while 35 percent have done housework, and 28 percent have cooked dinner. It is true, however, that working at home makes people much more efficient(高效的),because it allows workers to take care of annoying housework while still getting their jobs done. It’s much faster, for example,to shop for groceries at a quarter to three than to stand in line during the after-work rush. The fact that such practices remain officially unaccepted reflects how far we haven’t come as a society from the days when we expected every full-time worker to be supported by a full-time homemaker. More broadly the Wakefield survey suggests that employers may be missing a low-cost way to give workers something of value.Sixty-four percent of those survey participants who haven’t worked remotely would rather give up some bonus in order to get even one day a week working from home.Under such circumstances, smart firms need to find ways to let their employees have enough flexibility to manage their time efficiently. 1.Why do some employers hesitate to allow remote working? A.They fear losing control of their workers. B.They want to stick to their routine practice. C.The y have little trust in modern technology. D.They are used to face-to-face communication. 2.What seems to be most workers’ attitude toward remote working? A.Doubtful. B.Favorable. C.Reserved. D.Disapproving. 3.What does the author suggest smart firms do? A.Shorten their office hours. B.Give employees a pay raise.

Google's new camera, called Clips, is a smart device. It comes with a case that has a clip (夹子), but it's not designed to be worn on your clothing. Most interestingly, it uses artificial intelligence to take photography out of your hands and captures moments entirely on its own! What sets this roughly 2-inch by 2-inch camera, with a three-hour battery life and Gorilla Glass for toughness apart is that it is specially intended for candid moments, like when a child does something cute that may happen too quickly for you to pull out your smartphone. The Clips device, it uses machine learning algorithms (计算程序) to help capture scenes. Those algorithms include face recognition. "Once it learns that there's a face you see frequently, it'll try to get nice photos of those faces," said Juston Payne, the device's product manager. And they also want it to recognize facial expressions, which involved "training it to know what happiness looks like". The Google team also trained it to recognize what not to shoot—like when a child's hand is over the lens, or if it is tossed in a dark purse. The only way to see the images is by connecting the camera with your phone, as it has no screen for viewing or editing. Concerned it could seem strange? Yes, Payne admitted, but he said they addressed that by making it obvious what it is. A green light on the front signals that it is on. Besides, unlike a camera meant to monitor your home, it is not connected to the Internet. "This product is only possible because of the way that silicon(硅) has advanced," Payne said that now they could squeeze the technology down into a device this size. Going forward, we're likely to get more assistance from the artificial intelligence packed into our apps and gadgets.(1)What is the most outstanding feature of Clips? A.It enables easy Internet access. B.It is equipped with tough glass. C.It can be worn on your clothing. D.It allows of hands-free photography. (2)What does the underlined word "candid" in Paragraph 2 mean? A.Awkward. B.Brief. C.Touching. D.Unforgettable. (3)What makes Clips a reality according to Juston Payne? A.The advance in technology. B.The popularity of the Internet. C.The screen for viewing and editing. D.The rise of the smartphone industry. (4)What does the text mainly talk about? A.New gadgets in the age of apps.

Cassandra Feeley finds it hard to manage on her husband's income. So this year she did something more than a hobby. She planted vegetables in her yard. For her first garden, Ms. Feeley has put in 15 tomato plants, and five rows of a variety of vegetables. The family's old farm house has become a chicken house, its residents arriving next month. Last year, Ms. Rita Gartin kept a small garden. This year she has made it much larger because, she said, "The cost of everything is going up and I was looking to lose a few pounds too; so it's a win-win situation all around." They are among the growing number of Americans who, driven by higher living costs and a falling economy, have taken up vegetable gardening for the first time. Others have increased the size of their existing gardens. Seed companies and garden shops say that not since the 1970s has there been such an increase in interest in growing food at home. Now many gardens across the country have been sold out for several months. In Austin, Tex, some of the gardens have a three-year waiting list. George C Ball Jr. owner of a company, said sales of vegetable seeds and plants are up by 40%, over last year, double the average growth of last five years. Mr. Ball argues that some of the reasons have been building for the last few years. The big one is striking rise in the cost on food like bread and milk, together with the increases in the price of fruit and vegetables. Food prices have increase of higher oil price. People are driving less, taking fewer vacations, so there is more time to garden. (1)What does the word "residents" in Paragraph 1 probably refer to? A. chickens B. tomatoes C. gardens D. people (2)Why is vegetable gardening becoming increasingly popular? A. More Americans are doing it for fun. B. The price of oil is lower than before. C. There's a growing need for fruits. D. The cost of living is on the rise. (3)Which of the following might be the best title for the text? A. Family Food Planning B. Banking on Gardening C. A Belt-tightening Move D. Gardening as a Hobby 【答案】(1)A (2)D (3)B 【解析】【分析】本文是一篇说明文,越来越多的美国人在自家花园里种菜,分析出现这一现象的原因是由于生活成本的上升和经济的下降,人们不得不自己种菜以降低生活成本。 根据第一段中的“The family's old farm house has become a chicken house, its residents arriving next month. ”可知,Cassandra Feeley的旧房子成为了养鸡的地方,下个月新的居民就要来了。这里的新居民就是指他们所养的鸡。故选A。
