English has been called one of the most difficult languages for non-native speakers to learn. One reason is that English has so many rules.

36 Sometimes, this leaves learners confused. For example, the order of words in a sentence can be tricky.

37 The pronunciation of English words cannot always be judged by their spelling. For example, there are at least six ways to pronounce the group of letters spelled o-u-g-h. And, maybe the worst thing of all is that there are many idioms, or expressions, in English. 38

So, it is comforting to know that learning root words can help a non-native speaker use English.

39 Root words can help you to break down large, new words into smaller units to discover their meanings.

Learning just one root word can help you understand several words in

E n g l i s h.

40 Then where can a root be found? A root can be any part of

a word that carries meaning: the beginning, middle or end. Prefixes (前缀), bases, and suffixes (后缀) are types of roots. The prefix appears at the

beginning of a word, the base in the middle and the suffix at the end.

A. A root word is the most basic form of a word.

B. The English have always been fond of all kinds of rules.

C. You could say we use idioms like they’re going out of style.

D. And there are almost as many exceptions of those rules!

E. Most English root words came from the Greek and Latin languages.

F. Another reason why English is hard to learn is the pronunciation of its words.

G. So, by learning 20 or 30 root words, you can increase your vocabulary

to hundreds of more new words.

Why do people travel? There are many reasons one can think of when asked questions like this.

To travel far enough to meet yourself

Sometimes you find yourself in the middle of nowhere. 36 You find out your abilities. When you are offered a different lifestyle, you can find out what you are made of. The farther you go from your home, the nearer you come to your true self.

37

If you look back at all the amazing memories of your life, you will realize that most of them were out of your comfort zone. Travelling is dangerous, full of life threatening possibilities and will not always be comfortable, but at the

same time, it gives irreplaceable memories.

To slow down and relax

A wise man once said that never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life. Money is worth nothing if you cannot spend it on a little adventure. While we are deeply involved in making money, we forget that time is going through our fingers. 38 The feeling of being away from your workplace is pure happiness. The feeling of not having to worry about the never ending piles of files is pure joy. 39

To celebrate life

Life is short and the world is wide. One day you might wake up and realize that you don’t have time to do everything that you have always wanted to do, anymore. Once in a while, make time to appreciate the fact that you are alive, young, free and healthy. 40

A. To become a storyteller

B. Travelling lets you discover yourself

C. To break through your comfort zone.

D. So, go travelling to celebrate life itself.

E. You can relate to the world and connect to others.

F. And the feeling of being away from your boss for a few days is pure

pleasure.

G. Escape life for a little while because experience is far more valuable

than money.

Water is the most important liquid we know. It is in the ground and in the air that we breathe. All animals, plants and humans need water to survive.

●36

Water consists of very small molecules. Each of them has two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. Water can be a solid, a liquid or a gas, depending on the temperature it has. At 0°C water freezes and turns into ice. Do you know why you should let water out of pipes during the wintertime? . 37 At 100°C water boils and escapes as a vapour into the air. Between these two states water is a liquid.

● Water in our daily lives

There would be no life on earth without water. We use water in our houses for cooking, bathing and washing the dishes. 38 In many dry areas farmers must bring water to the fields through canals. Industries and factories also use water. Power stations burn coal which turns water into steam.

● Water and the human body

The human body is made up largely of water. Up to 75% of our body is water. Water helps us digest food. 39 It also needs water to help carry away the substances that we do not need any more. A normal human needs about 2 to 3 litres of water a day to survive.

● World water supply

40 However, clean water, is getting rarer because of pollution. About 97% of the world’s water is in the oceans. Only 3% is the freshwater in lakes, rivers and glaciers. Much of the world has enough fresh water but there are regions that are too dry and don’t get enough rain.

A. Chemistry of water

B. The importance of water

D. It may freeze and burst the pipes.

E. The amount of water we have on earth is always the same.

F. Some areas do not have enough water because people waste it.

G. Chemical reactions in our body would not be possible without water.

How can we keep safe personal information on our computers or cellphones? 36

View emails with a careful eye

Two-factor authentication adds a second level of security to an account.

38

It’s a security option that requires a password as well as an additional piece of information only the user would know.

Update apps and operating systems

39 While these updates may appear to only change the way your pho ne’s software looks, they often come with security improvements. There may be a bug (软件漏洞). Those bugs are discovered by cell providers or smartphone makers, so it’s a good idea to upgrade them.

40

It’s no s urprise that changing your password has always been a basic form of protection. But what we pick as passwords and how we manage them are important. First, passwords should never include your personal information. So stay away from names and birthdates. Ideally, passwords are a combination of lowercase (小写) and uppercase (大写) letters and random characters. Being a sports reporter for more than a decade, I see “Olympic” as a magic word to me.

36 This feeling occurred when I was holding the Olympic torch for the second time on Monday in Seoul, the capital city of South Korea.

It was a great honor for me to be invited by the International Olympic Committee to be a torchbearer for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Games as a representative of Chinese sports reporters. Ten years ago, I was invited by IOC to be a torchbearer for the 2008 Beijing Summer Games.

I have now carried the torch in two different countries. 37

For the Pyeongchang torch relay, there are 7,500 runners, representing 75 million people living on the Korean peninsula(半岛). In 101 days, the route passes through nine provinces and eight major cities across the country.

When I arrived at the collection point for the torchbearers, all the staff and even passers-by cheered because they knew I would be joining the relay.

38 When a group of torchbearers left to join in the relay, all the people high-fived with us, shouting “Fighting!”

With less than a month to go before the Games’ opening ceremonies in Pyeongchang, Seoul had been transformed into an Olympic city as well.

39 While I awaited my turn, many people came to take photos with me and the torch.

“Let everyone shine” is not just a slogan for the torch relay but reflects the fact that ordinary people from every walk of life—students, bakers, teachers, farmers—are taking part. The Olympic spirit is a lot more than the slogan of “swifter, higher, stronger.” 40

A. The word is also a symbol of a country.

B. The Olympics are more than a sport event to a country.

C. I could feel their heartfelt enthusiasm toward the Olympics.

D. I found the word is also an invitation for everyone to shine.

E. Along the relay route, people came out to cheer the flame.

F. I have seen how the Olympic flame inspires everybody around it.

G. “Olympic” has the magic to bring everyone together to chase their dreams.

What kids really need is free time to engage all their senses and use their imaginations. You can learn too. What counts is simply to get out there, show that you value the outdoors, and be ready to have fun. 39 In fact, it is not necessary for you to know anything at all about science or nature. And remember, questions are more powerful than answers anyway! Sit back and watch your kids learn. Don’t be too much of a helicopter parent, always saying “no”. Instead, try to spare more time to stay with your kids when necessary.

2017年高考英语阅读专练(七选五) 1. Brain Transplants Research on the human brain has been attracting more and more scientists in recent years. 1 If we compare a human brain to a hard disc, what the scientists are doing is to make better use of the hard disc. The idea that a human brain could be transplanted may come from Frankenstein. In 1999, an experiment turned a bear into a dolphin. 2 They were made of the memory area in the dolphin’s brain containing information about swimming. They had a series of useful information, which was saved into a button-sized chip (芯片). Later the information was transplanted into the action memory area in the bear’s brain. 3 It proved to be a highly successful experiment and a bear was turned into a dolphin. Recently, another memory transplant was performed at the Motor Nerve Research Institute of the University of California. The experiment had an entire transplant of the memory area. 4 The transplant was performed from a dog named Genius to a dog named Idiot. Genius could follow up to 100 gestures and orders made by its master. It was a real genius in memorizing. However, Idiot had no contact with people since its birth. It became an animal with nothing in its brain, without any memory. 5 When the two dogs woke up, Idiot had grasped all the abilities Genius possessed; it was good at memorizing and sensible. It could follow every gesture and any command given by its master. But Genius gave no response to its master, and did not recognize him at all. A. The experiment was a complete success. B. It included actions, moods, logic, words, images, etc. C. Then it was released by means of electric power. D. Different images have different meanings in the memory area. E. Using the most advanced technology, detailed images were produced. F. Discoveries show that messages are carried by the central nervous system in the brain. G. One of the latest topics is how to change the human brain or combine it with the computer. 2. W. Lloyd Jerome’s Dental Surgery If you walk into W.Lloyd Jerome’s dental surgery in Glasgow,
