It’s easy to do easy things, but they don’t carry the challenges and rewards of doing something difficult. Scott Kelly said he tried to express that view everywhere he went. And he spoke from experience, having spent a career that included the time as a NASA astronaut, US Navy captain, fighter pilot, and engineer.

Scott spoke at the University of North Alabama, sharing stories about his experience of spending a year on the International Space Station (ISS). He said the physical pressure of living in weightlessness for a year was hard to describe and that the fluids(积水) in his head sometimes made him feel like he was standing on his head. It also needed some time to recover when he returned home. “My legs were weak and it would be uncomfortable to sit for a while because my body hadn’t had that pressure so long,” Scott said.

He discussed life aboard including spending time with Russian astronauts. They came from different cultures. He had managed to get along well with everyone aboard as they lived together, worked together, and had to rely on each other. He thought it was one of the most rewarding things in his life.

Though life there was not easy, Scott never regretted being an astronaut and going to space. He also discussed experiences growing up, admitting that he wasn’t always the greatest student but was able to overcome that through hard work and determination.

“Never give up or lower your dreams. If you work for it, all things are possible. There is a zero percent chance of succeeding if you don’t even try. And when you succeed after trying hard, you’ll find it really rewarding,” Scott said in the end.

A. he enjoyed making speeches

B. he was a responsible astronaut

C. his life in space was challenging

C. He learned to develop close relationships with others.

D. He picked up some knowledge of Russian culture.

6. Which of the following can best describe Scott?

A. Kind and thoughtful.

B. Curious and humorous.

C. Easygoing and sociable.

D. Hardworking and determined.

7. What does the author intend to tell us from Scott’s story?

A. It’s importantto have a dream

B. Easy things are also worth doing

C. A suitable career leads one to success.

D. Difficult things are demanding but rewarding

C

The beach may seem like an inviting place to run on a cool summer morning, but is running on the sand good for your body? It can be, but it’s important to be aware of the challenges that some beach runners experience before you get ready.

Running on the beach can be a good thing. It’s certainly different from running on a track or a pavement. For starters, sand can be a challenge because it has an uneven (不平坦的) surface. As you push off, you’re going to lose some of your push as the sand moves. So, you’re not going to be able to push yourself forward as you would on a track or a pavement. But this unevenness has anupside: It gives your body an extra workout, forcing you to exercise muscles that don’t get as much use during runs on firm surfaces. For example, your feet, ankles and lower back might feel sorer and more tired than usual after a beach run just because the surface is constantly moving and changing step to step.

You also might feel sore afterward because beaches tend to slope (倾斜) down to the water. If you’re going for a long run on the beach, you might notice that one side of your body might feel sorer because you’re putting more pressure on it due to the slope.

Some beach runners prefer to run barefoot — not wearing anything on feet. However, if you’re not used to barefoot running, start slowly and don’t run long distances at first. That’s because running barefoot uses more different muscles than running with shoes does, and it’s important to strengthen these muscles and adapt your feet. If you want to run barefoot and as long as you run carefully enough into it, go for it!

Running on the sand can be a smart choice for you, because running on softer ground surfaces can reduce muscle damage.

8. Why is it difficult to run on the beach for starters?

A. The soft surface makes people fall over easily.

B. People need to run carefully on its smooth surface.

C. Running on its uneven surface takes much effort.

D. It’s hard to keep one’s balance on its hard surface.

9. Which of the following best explains “upside” underlined in Paragraph 2?

A. Advantage.

B. Reason.

C. Character.

D. Challenge.

10. What’s the author’s attitude to barefoot running?

A. Critical.

B. Supportive.

C. Doubtful.

D. Uncaring.

11. The passage can probably be found in ______.

A. A primary school textbook

B. A tourist guide

C. A sports magazine

D. A scientific report

D

Some people take their holiday decoration very seriously. And some take it to the next level. The Griffith family in Kenova, West Virginia, is in this camp. They put on a display that shows they’re just filled with Halloween spirit.

Each year, this family displays 3,000 pumpkins (南瓜) in front of their home for the Halloween season. Yes, you readthatright. Ric Griffith puts out one jack-o’ -lantern (南瓜灯) for every person who lives in Kenova.

Of course he doesn’t do it all on his own. He has a lot of help from his family, and also from members of the community who are super-proud of what has become quite the tourist attraction over the years. More than 30,000 people stop by to see the amazing display, which includes jack‑o’‑lanterns cut to look like the faces of famous people, animals, cartoon characters, and other creative designs. It’s certainly a must-see as part of the area’s Ceredo-Kenova Autumnfest.

To fit in all 3,000 pumpkins, Griffith and his helpers spread them across the home’s garden and front porch (门廊), as well as on the roof!

Griffith began the tradition back in 1978 with just fivepumpkins and, many years later, it’s much bigger and better. People can’t help but come to the area, walking along the sidewalk outside the house to get that perfect Halloween experience.

“Locals take great pride in it, and then there are people from around the country who plan fall trips and include it in their trips so they can see it,” said Tyson Compton, president of the Cabell‑Huntington Convention and Visitors Bureau. “It’s really something.”

“It’s become a tradition for many people in our area, and it feels good to keep that going,” Griffith said.

12. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A. The Griffiths selling 3,000 pumpkins a day.

B. Ric Griffith giving 3,000 jack-o’‑lanterns to tourists.

C. Ric Griffith teaching 3,000 people how to display jack-o’‑lanterns.

D. The Griffiths decorating their house with 3,000 pumpkins.

13. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?

A. Ric Griffith’s idea has received support from his community.

B. There are only two kinds of jack-o’‑lanterns.

C. Ric Griffith dislikes asking for help from others.

D. There are 30,000 people in Kenova.

14. What do we know about the tradition?

A. It began with 1,978 pumpkins.

B. It has lasted more than 40 years.

C. It includes five pumpkin competitions.

D. It encourages people to do more exercise.

15. What’s Tyson Compton’s attitude towards the tradition?

A People in the Middle Ages did eat with their hands. Personal utensils (餐具) were mostly unheard of, especially forks. There were spoons to help serve, but only special guests would receive a knife from the host. Everyone else would be expected to bring their own. Of course, eating with one's hands can be quite a sticky situation, so towels were provided to help diners stay at least somewhat clean as they ate. Still, dining was often a messy affair. At special occasions in the wealthiest households, women tended to dine alone, separate from the men. Women were expected to uphold a quality of grace. Eating greasy meat by hand would certainly not help! Once the men and women had finished their meals, they would come together to socialize. Dietary scholars of the Middle Ages believed that the foods in a meal needed to be served and eaten in order of heaviness. The lightest and most easily digested foods, such as fruits and cheeses, were eaten first to help the digestive (消化) system get started. Once digestion was underway, greens and light meats, such as lettuce, cabbage and chicken, could be eaten. Last came the heavier vegetables and meats, such as carrots, beans, beef, pork, and mutton. This method was considered the most healthful way to eat. The main and largest meal of the day was supper, and it was eaten at midday. Dinner was a light meal, and many of those in nobility (贵族) -the highest levels of the Middle Ages society-skipped breakfast altogether. Breakfast was considered unnecessary for those who did not perform physical work. Snacks and any other eating during the day were viewed the same way. Commoners, or the working class, were allowed to eat breakfast and small meals throughout the day. 1. What did people in the Middle Ages usually do at the dinner table? A. They cleaned hands before meals. B. They used personal utensils. C. They had to use knives at dinner. D. They ate mostly with hands. 2. What is the third paragraph mainly about? A.
